I love WaniKani because of its simplicity. Many softwares/apps evolve only to bring unnecessary complexity to the user.
If you like srs, renshuu.org has user made mnemonics that you can pick from or make your own with color coded and linked radicals to make it even easier to read and visualize. Plus thereâs grammar, and vocab , and even sentence srs. All for the great price of 0 (zero currency).
plus the more you study, the more virtual cats, dogs, and other pets you can buy

The Reorder script was necessary for me to keep up a 7 day per level tempo. Besides that one I used around 20 other scripts. Not necessary but it surely made the whole process a lot more convenient.
Dear All, well, I find it (still) deeply annoying to have bought a lifetime membership just before the whole update issue and subsequent killing of most user skripts, at least used by me. The total lack of customer orientation and response made me quit wanikani despite the lifetime sentence. Pitty, as the beginning was really nice and useful. But alas, it seems all Japanese learners and affectionados have left the team. Anahow, I wish everybody success in trying to get them back on track. Alas, I donât think this possible.
well, i do agree that undo button could be handy , but it can also be misused.
for me i dont get past some easy words as i am to eager to fill them in and i dont look carefully at the word.
some common errors i made is typing mikka for three months . i know its sangatsu⊠and onnanoko instead of onnanohito.
the thing that pains me the most however and really has me swcond guessing in getting the lifetime in a couple of weeks is the estimated progress level⊠i made an account in 2020. it didnt really click with me than. and now it says the estimated time is 700 something days to level up. i love stats. and the unability to correct the real start date is driving me nutsâŠ
i constantly check eta when driving and i would like a more correct eta for finishing wanikani. it will take me over a 100 years atmâŠ
If that happens in Anki, I might bury for the next day. After all, there is no written (typed) evidence that I really knew those before the fact (show Answer).
Undo and retype might be fair here, indeed. Double Check can be fine tuned.
At level 2, couldnât you just create a new account if itâs that big of an issue? That said, trust me you will be taking more breaks. I too have large gaps, and find the Level Up page more useful as it shows actual progress by level versus an average. Iâm currently hanging in the 9-10 day range, until I need some time off.
Stats is a third-party app, so not made by WaniKani staff.
But, Level 1 can be clicked to exclude from stats. (I made an account in 2012 and started in 2015.)

My biggest gripe is the lack of an undo functionality. I have big fingers and (very) often make typos on my phone. I acknowledge that they want to avoid people abusing it, but I donât agree with it. I think most people here are learning the language because they want to and not because they have to. I doubt many of them would want to cheat, what would be the point? Either way, if someone wanted to do that, they can already do so with the user script, and in the end itâs their responsibility if they do.
Adding new levels and kanjis would be my second gripe, then again I am faaaaar from level 60, so until then Iâm sure they will add some. Theyâve been adding a few dozen words throughout November, which is nice.
Lastly would be dedicated a mobile app. The mobile interface on Firefox mobile is good enough, so this would just be a nice to have.
I also think the comparison to development speed of Bunpro is unfair. Bunpro has received many updates because it needs them, and the UI still has its bugs. The experience WK offers is much smoother (and motivating, I find myself doing my reviews much more regularly on WK) and doesnât need changing for the sake of it.

Even the Renaissance role players are upset at the progress!
The biggest issue I have with all this is the lack of any communication from them about it. If we were at least given a vague roadmap and some info about what theyâre currently working on⊠I guess until then Iâll just keep relying on userscripts to sustain myself! And at least the WK community is mostly amazing ![]()
Maybe Iâll send an email asking about it, although thereâs virtually 0% chance theyâll give any info based on what theyâve done so far
I honestly donât care, beyond the removal of the summary page. Even that is fading, with the great userscript replacing its functionality. I like WK as it is.
I do wonder where Koichi and Viet are though. Maybe they made it big on cryptocurrency back when it was boomingâŠ
fwiw, I also bought a lifetime subscription, and I have been happy with the way wnkn has been since I started using it two years ago. I also kind of feel like the desire for improvement leads to scope creep, and while there has been some hiccups in the past wrt wanikani updates, I dont feel a desire for them to keep pushing the boundaries. I hardly use any userscripts (i want to say I only have heatmap, gold burns, and a little widget showing the percentage correct for my last review). I use flaming durtles but mostly because thereâs not an official wnkn app out, and I do a lot of reviewing on mobile, and I like that durtles lets me do things offline.
I think you should really use the site first before claiming functions are blocked without paying.
To break it down,
-yes, listening questions are paid, but you can still listen to many sentences without getting quizzed on them
-yes, sentence questions are paid, I misremembered that, my bad
-yes, pitch accent questions are paid, but if youâre not practicing speaking well enough to say the mora correctly before pitch, it really shouldnât be a priority
-writing questions refers to actually writing out the kanji, like drawing it as if you were using pen/pencil
-yes, jlpt style questions are paid, but if youâre so hungry for the jlpt, there are plenty of practice tests out there. Having it as a paid feature is not blocking anyoneâs learning
-some styles of shiritori are paid. There are a bunch of games you can join for free or play with bots.
-the text analyzer is like asking chatgpt for a sentence breakdown. I think it makes perfect sense that you have a free limit. If you need more than 25,000 characters analyzed, you probably need to study more
-having fewer Japanese fonts is not disrupting many peopleâs learning. Iâd bet that the cursive and 8-bit ones are paid, but being able to see them just helps with exposure
-the progress graphs show stuff like your accuracy at various times of day
So what functions does Renshuu.org have for free that WK doesnât?
- grammar questions
- the ability to study words and vocab as you like (for the jlpt, a specific textbook, or you can even just make you own list)
- kana (and some kanji) writing practice
- counter games that show visual examples of things like äșæŹ could be 2 pairs of pants
- computer moderated shiritori (against a bot or the community)
- color coded breakdowns of kanji by components
- output practice with the question corner, haiku, and word garden
- grammar explanations with clear explanation and examples (when studying in a group for the N2, some stuff that we couldnât google was on Renshuu more than once)
- comics and pictures to help clearly show various basic grammar points
- a motivator that lets you grow trees and plants by studying along with buying various pets that do all sorts of cute things in your garden
Not many functions are paywalled and for the average learner, only listening questions are probably relevant. Some functions are limited, but what is available for free is really expansive and I would honestly be surprised if anyone could completely get through all the free content on Renshuu in a year or even 5.
Do you get paid for that? I did just say that it is wrong to say everything is 0 bucks like you did. It is great that there is a lot of free stuff. But there still is a lot behind the pay wall.
I think it is a good resource but personally I donât like the design and structure. But that is just my personal taste using it on a laptop. You are very free to use and recommend it. But that doesnât mean everybody has to agree with your opinion.
Almost everything you could need is free on the site. I got a lifetime membership for $100 and the site is being updated regularly and a complete package. WK took a text book (RTK) and Anki, and made it into a website. Worth $200-300? Probably not considering they have completely stopped developing the site.
I think you should reread what I originally said. I did accidently include the sentence srs, which I already apologized for.
Itâs a great free resource with a hell of a lot more coverage and functionality than WK.
Itâs paid sprinkles on top of free ice cream. Speaking of which, I forgot to mention the free ice cream also has a discord with speaking and study sessions.
Thatâs very fair. Every time Michael opens up feedback, I beg him to better structure the menus and settings lol.
Of course not, but acting like the free portions of the website arenât enough on their own, aside from native material, and that you have to pay to get a good study resource is really unfair to Renshuu.
lmao nope. My loyalty canât be bought when regarding things Iâm passionate about.
Does that clear everything up?
