Woohoo, I made level 14. That’s five levels up in 2022. All I do is study, but at least I’m having fun.
Thank you and congratulations to leveling up as well!! ![]()
well done!
i heard that picture loud and clear.
If the new Kanji really did stick I’ll level up tomorrow after 13 days on this level.
This pace is really enjoyable if not even almost a tad too slow (0/0 for a few days in a row now) – but I was very diligent with daily reviews so that’s not a big surprise. Also my accuracy is still high, so there’s no pile up of leeches and my new in-depth lessons process with drawing each Kanji seems to aid in leech prevention as well.
Ha ha, I realized how bright that picture was against the white background after I posted it, but I went with it for fun. Homer is the best ![]()
no noes… i use dark mode.
i meant i could hear homer say “woohoo”
in my head
You’re so right - The Simpsons accompanied my childhood and I love the series even to this day!
Congrats on leveling up! ![]()
the wall of shame
Please join me in encouraging those manly racers to update or maybe crush that accelerator pedal a bit!
this table shows racers who still have 0 as their total level progression or those whose original level and present level are the same.
Come on racers!
if you just joined, don’t get mad at meow. am just meowing around ![]()
One of them even states he/she is at 6 days per level…
Is that even humanly possible ![]()
(Maybe if you stay awake 24/7 doing your lessons
).
It seems somewhat rude but… Can saibaneko or Vividstrike consider making a “Disqualify rule”. Perhaps 30 days without progress?
That would certainly make the table much more manageable.
Of course if some people decide to race again, they’ll be always welcome ![]()
What do U think?
And it’s not just my imagination! This is what a two-week-level does after a sub-8-days run:
Kept doing reviews but spaced out lessons way more, therefore avoiding the barrage of apprentice reviews:
It’s not like I stopped doing Wanikani and two weeks still isn’t really slow all things considered but the daily impact is quite significant. Now imagine if I hadn’t slowed down and the burn reviews just came on top of everything else – that can easily overwhelm. Which it did in previous runs ![]()
I think 6d 20h is the lower limit or something - where you have to sacrifice sleep to maintain that pace …
Even a language learning race should have some rules, yeah. I’d be in favour of something like that.
That was likely an average based on their days per level, including their lowest couple levels, which are much shorter. The number will increase once their level rises.
I levelled five times since January 1st, which may seem impossible given the time frame, but I was almost level 10 when the race began, which accounts for the extra bump.
I think it’s really important to remember that everyone has different circumstances, and that while this is called the “Study Buddy Race”, it’s only to encourge everyone else, it doesn’t matter what place they’re in.
So, good luck to everyone.
it’s @VividStrike thread.
i would be against a kick you out rule personally but if it’s a choice people want to make, there are always POLLs. for racers that have not updated when we hit that first 6 months mark, it would make sense to clean the table up for sure.
i feel a better way would be to nudge the racers who do better with a bit of a push. of course it would require said racers to ask for it. someone who’s active on this thread would then accept responsibility for nudging and bookmark that post with a reminder date. if no update from the forgetful racer is posted before the bookmark pings, the study buddy can post a reminder for them. a funny gif would be a + hehe.
I feel like this goes against the spirit of the race. Like low barrier to entry, encouraging/supportive vibe etc.
But maybe cleaning up the table by moving people’s data to a collapsible list if they don’t update in a few months could be a good solution? If they come back then they just need to copy their data from the other list to keep participating.
E.g.
Users who have not updated in X amount of time
| level | user | started | time per level | OG level | level ups | burns |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Example user1 | 30/12/2021 | X/X | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| 1 | Example user 2 | 31/12/2021 | X | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| 1 | Example user 3 | 04/01/2022 | X | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Well, I have made it to level 5 - hoorah!![]()
And 96 lessons awaiting me (ahh well, I did say I liked a challenge
)
But seriously, after thinking “kanji’s too hard, I’ll never be able to do it”, I’m finding it is really helping my vocabulary etc, and, dare I say it, sometimes it’s even fun
(all the vocabulary that came with 気 was like “eeh, this is now so obvious)
Well, no time to rest on my laurels, I need to start feeding those 96 lessons to my review queue ![]()
That’s such a nice idea
No one is left behind!
And it works as a motivation for those who enter into the collapsable list (much better than nudging one by one
).
lol “making the list” becomes a thing!
let’ s POLL then!
this is anonymous and let’s you pick 4 options
it’s not perfect but maybe we can get an idea of what people would like to see done to keep the racing table alive and kicking yet making sure all that entered get what this was supposed to give in the first place: support.
when racers seem to not update/progress in a while, what would the best solution be?
- leave everything as is
- leave everything as is but clean the table up every x months
- cleave the table into active racers and inactive racers - inactive racers can simply choose to join when they’re ready
- kick the slow pokes out and laugh at them cruelly
- @ the inactive racers and check on them (this option needs refining)
- something else

I guess no-one wants to show his true self here… ![]()
*laughs cruelly…
I hate to be that guy, but who do we define as active and who as inactive?
