That’s actually a review font randomizer I wrote some time ago to get more used to different styles and handwritten kanji. There’s a thread around the forums about a more advanced project similar to this (Jitai).
I just wanted something I have complete control over and which would work exactly as I wrote it (includes random direction change per item - note that it only really affects vocab).

My current lineup of fonts is like this:
('Chihaya Jyun', 'ShigotoMemogaki', 'BIZ UDGothic', 'ArmedBanana', 'Nagayama_Kai', 'Zen Antique', 'BIZ UDGothic', 'IPAMincho', 'Kiwi Maru', 'KouzanBrushFontGyousyoOTF', 'Hachi Maru Pop', 'Yuji Boku')

On a completely separate note:

Yeah, sure. It’s just a meaning explanation, so why would I ask…

Fair enough to ask – 包丁の語源・由来は中国の料理人である庖丁(ホウテイ)という人物。 | 雑学.com. Also, 庖丁 - Wiktionary. But it probably doesn’t help much with memorizing.

The more you know! That was actually an interesting read and I think it helps that 丁 has てい as its other on’yomi. It’s some loops that you have to go through to make the connections, but now I at least have the anchor, so I’m feeling more confident I will remember this one.

Heh, the meaning mnemonic for 交番 used to say something similar - “why do these kanji in this order mean police box? Who knows?!” sort of thing. Insert image of Chidi pointing at the blackboard and saying “etymologists”. Etymologists know. Took me all of twenty seconds to research the answer and tag a mod with it.

Kanji really has the reputation of being so complex yet utterly useless in a regular situation. I feel like it’s just an artform rather than an actual functional writing form.
