WaniKani in other lanugages - Update about current situation? - Also, Koichi is in this thread!

Two bombshells in one post… Becareful you don’t break the internet! I am going to miss the posts speculating about the demise of Koichi and Viet.

On this note, I’d like to suggest something that’s probably simpler: would it be possible to revise the mnemonics to be more international-friendly? I sometimes see North American cultural references or dialectal words. For example, the 空 pronunciation mnemonic uses “cooties”, which dictionaries claim is “[US, informal]”. There are also some personalities I’ve never heard of, like Mr T.
Making the mnemonics more friendly to people not immersed in US culture would be much appreciated!

Oh huh, I didn’t realize this was US-specific. Yeah this should probably get changed.

Yeah I had this problem too, some people just aren’t immersed in cultu-

I pity the fool who hasn’t heard of Mr. T.

Is that you Worf, son of Mogh? We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. But the Crabigator is cute so no assimilation is necessary.

Just a couple days ago I saw some person on the forums weave doom and gloom about how Wanikani is dying, Koichi and friends are forever lost to oblivion, the future is dark et cetera…

…and now I get to see Koichi in the wild for the first time since joining over 3 years ago! How fascinating. But it only makes sense, otherwise who’s been sending me all the level up emails?

Haha, I don’t think this thread is going to be closed anytime soon, because everyone is just too happy to know that koichi is with us again

I got a bulletin on my email telling me that @koichi is back, so naturally I had to rush to this thread and be back myself.

Good to have Koichi back but also he’s now a father? Whaaaaat?

Greetings from Narita Airport, y’all!

Should I rename this thread to “Epic comeback thread of lost members”?

I hope you’re doing well - working on WaniKani, writing for Tofugu, getting enough sleep, brainstorming for the next ARG, all that kind of thing…

Gotta say this is the single most frustrating thing about this process. Hard enough learning a second language without having to think with an American accent as well to make the mnemonics work. Many fails. Unending irritation. Much cursing. It detracts from the experience an enormous amount.

Even if they’ve been trying to correct this, they’ve a long way to go. Eg: 流石. Trying to remember さすが as “saw Suga” is a nightmare. The word “saw” is pronounce very, very differently in proper English.

Of course I realise I can make my own mnemonic, but I’ve paid a lot (for me) for this life-time access. There is an expectation that it should do all the work on that front, otherwise I might as well be making my own Anki set for free.

Nothing better than all the mnemonics using cock for かく right?

Yes! “Toss” as a mnemonic for たす in 助ける is very strange to me.

Now that I think about it…

What about the example sentences? :moyai:
