Vita's studylog

This week I got back to the gym, it’s not raining anymore, and I’m feeling way, way better. It seems that this time I’m REALLY not sick anymore. I hope it’s going to stay true for a long time.
This month, as well as the previous one, I didn’t really make any progress with the language. I don’t know what happened with my health, but it was terrible.
This week I started to study with a teacher! I surprised myself as, apparently, I kinda can speak Japanese. A completely broken Japanese, yes. But it’s Japanese none the less!
I asked that we first review N5 and N4 grammar before starting N3, and now we are going trough a N5 book. Just reviewing all the grammar, and looking into everything I don’t know/remember.
I’m swamped with work from the programming school I’m enrolled in, because I couldn’t do anything while sick, and now I’m behind schedule.
It’s overwhelming to go back to everything i left unfinished two months ago, because reviews kept pilling up, the deadline for all the projects kept approaching, and life in general didn’t stop. I’m the only one who stopped.

Hi! :high_touch:

For the past few month I didn’t do much, as I ended up with depression and only now I’m managing to slowly get out of it.

There are quite a few thing I did, and even more things I didn’t do.

A month and a half ago I started studying with a Japanese teacher. I was quite worried that I was unable to do something a genuinely enjoy, which is studying Japanese. So I needed to make sure that I do something at least two times a week.

I didn’t study a lot outside the Japanese classes (which is not good, but it’s better than nothing)

What am I doing now for Japanese?

  • I’m reviewing N5 grammar with my teacher using 日本語能力試験問題集 N5文法スピードマスター. There are a lot of grammar points I didn’t remember, or I’m not able to use even if I understand it. We are on page 91, which seems to be the last one of this book (not including the tests). Once I manage to solve some problems, I’d like to actively practice the problematic grammar points.

  • I did what I had to do from the start: I deleted my progress on wanikani to lvl 9. As I, once again, didn’t keep showing up daily for the reviews, they kept piling once again. And a lot of words I just didn’t remember. There were a lot of words that are similar to one another, but are different, and my mind just couldn’t take it with so many reviews. I’m now at a much more comfortable level, and even if I don’t remember exactly some words, I’m still familiar with them.

  • I created a separate Japanese account for youtube to watch only Japanese videos, and started using another browser so that I don’t have recommendations from my other accounts. I’m not using it a lot yet, but I’m certain that I will be able to build the habit.

  • I restarted the shinto book, and now I’m taking notes. Also I identified some areas of interest to study. More often than not, when I start to study something from the beginning, instead of studying what I’m most interested in at the moment (i.g. history of art), I end up abandoning the studies all together.

Now that I got back to level 9, after a few days of reviews, I feel like I can breathe again!
I still have 300 reviews to do, but a few days ago I had 500!
Finally I feel some progress, and the reviews are not coming back instantly!
So far, it’s the best decision I’ve made!

Japanese is fun, and for people with learning the language as a goal it can be important. It’s never going to be as important as taking care of yourself, though. Glad to see that you’re coming out of the depression (not as glad you were in it, of course!). It sounds like you’ve got a solid learning framework setting up, and hopefully adding the little bit of joy from the language can combine to make happy days a regular thing!

I certainly believe so!
I’m in the process of learning to enjoy the little things right now, and learning the language is one of my little big things that makes my life make sense!
Thank you so much for the encouragement!

Today we started the N4 book at class!
After the review of all the N5 grammar, and starting the N4 I noticed that there are a lot of grammar structures I don’t remember because I don’t use them.
I think I should create a routine to use them more or something. It always were difficult for me to create example phrases in every language, because my mind doesn’t like to create from nothing, but I guess it’s time to do something about it.

And once again, I did it!
