I want to believe they got distracted by the cake.

I’m relatively new to the forums, so apologies if my comment has been made by others before.

Three reasons why I think people leave (around level 15):

  • Around level 15 the wkstats site tells you that you have 95% of the JLPT 4 kanji under your belt. For the people who study Japanese out of a hobby, this amount of Kanji might be all they need. From this point onward you would have to use advanced learning materials to keep your grammar and vocab on par with your kanji progress.

  • The “pressure” of a community and leveling speed. Don’t get me wrong, this community is really one of the strengths of the application, but I can totally image some people getting discouraged with their level up speed being (far) behind the stated averages and their fellow WK students. Seeing people far in the 30s and above, knowing that it will take you several months to get there, might people to drop out completely.

  • The novelty of learning a new language wears off, and people feel that they got a big enough taste of Japanese, and now it’s time for Korean, Chinese or whatever language.

Also you start to realize the amount of effort you must put into learning the language, and for how long. Japanese is quite demanding, and even with the help of WK, you’re years away to be actually proficient.

Talking about real curses…

In college, i saw really brilliant people studying the language for 3~4 years, getting to a N3 level and dropping it afterwards because of how demanding it is… and because there are no more resources to get into the advanced zone.

Still being unable to understand raw material they lost practice and, about 5 years after, one told me “I’m literally struggling even with katakana… after all the effort. I must had gone to Japan or do something.”

Thing is, you need to get your language level to and intermediate-advanced level (B2 for european languages, not sure for Japanese, might be between N3 and N2) where you can understand raw material and keep going on your own; because otherwise you will struggle a lot to understand material and you may fall into the curse of dropping it and ultimately forgetting.

Never forget to practice, and keep going

I’ve been studying Japanese on and off over the last ten years, always stuck in the beginner phase because I never pushed through. It was fun but never a necessity. At one point I was super fluent in bar Japanese, ordering chicken katsu and nama biiru like a pro. My wife speaks fluent English, so again no need really to progress. It wasn’t until my wife told me she wanted to move to Japan next year that I got super serious, and got a real goal to work to.

Oh, and having a two year old kid speaking better Japanese than me, that’s also a great motivator…

The past two months on WK has taught me more kanji than my two semesters in uni and study after work over the past years. I finally feel confident that this study journey will reap some results and that kanji ARE learnable.

Wow, congratulations on your resolution. Hope things go well for you

Yes, truly this is the advantage of this site. I’m impressed by the amount of stuff I’m currently able to understand

I’m level 15 now, and hopefully this weekend I will break the curse and reach level 16! :ghost::radioactive::ok:

If I had to guess, I would say people eventually get worn down monotonous kanji review. There’s no production or even interpretation in WK, so no creativity. That’s dull. The people who stick with it are the ones who are engaging with Japanese outside of apps like this and really are fighting to achieve some goal that WK and other learning apps are only supporting. Basically, don’t use WK as an end in itself – use it as a stepping stone to something you really care about, like reading your first book in Japanese. Coming to WK every day knowing that if you just work a little harder here, then the next page you try to read in a book might take only 30 minutes instead of an hour to read makes the monotony of reviews into something way more fulfilling.

Sorry to ask but how can you check the stats? E.g. how long one spent for one level

You can go to www.wkstats.com and put your API key V1 in, and you’ll get a lot of interesting stats about your progress.

Break the level 1-59 curse next
