Learning Japanese through pro wrestling

Well… this wasn’t the press conference I wanted to translate…

TJPW released a 緊急記者会見 tonight where they announced that Hikari won’t be able to make it to the 1.4 and 1.6 shows, so Free WiFi has to relinquish the tag belts :sob:.

I had a long and also kind of terrible day, but pushed myself to finish the translation before I went to bed anyway because the translation I saw circulating from that HD Subs account was, uh, frankly not very good. My friends and I have noticed the quality of that account’s translations decreasing :skull:.

Anyway, here’s the video, and here’s the official transcript. Thankfully, it’s really short, at least.

On December 31, a hastily called press conference was held at Shinjuku Gyoen Office in Tokyo.

The press conference was attended by representative Tetsuya Koda and Nao Kakuta. Hikari Noa will miss the January 4 Korakuen Hall show and the January 6 Shinjuku FACE show due to poor physical health, and since the timeline for her return is “something that is not known definitively” (Koda), Noa and Kakuta will relinquish the Princess Tag Team Titles that they hold. Kakuta gave her comments on the matter.

"The fact that I have to relinquish the first belt I ever won is really disappointing, but since the title match on January 4 has already been set and we won’t be able to stand in the ring together for it, at that point, I personally feel that Free WiFi has already lost. So, I have decided to accept the fact that we’re giving the belts up this time. Today, I have to sort out my own thoughts, and after the break, I’m going to do my best in 2024 with a refreshed mindset.”

Representative Koda then announced a 3-way tag match to determine the 15th Princess Tag Team Champions, between Rika Tatsumi & Miu Watanabe, Suzume & Arisu Endo, and Ryo Mizunami & Yuki Aino (see “News” for the other card changes, including the January 6 Shinjuku FACE show). A question and answer session was held at the end.

――Are you and Hikari going to aim for the Princess Tag Team Championship again?

Kakuta: “We won the belts together and made some happy memories in 2023, so to be honest, I want to accept the fact that we lost here and have to give up the belts, and I have a strong desire for a personal reset, so 2024 is a new year, and I want to get a start right away as Nao Kakuta, the individual. Her return is still undecided, so I’d like to think about the future of Free WiFi when she comes back.”

――As Nao Kakuta, the individual, what are your goals, and what are you aiming for?

And here’s her final response: “え~どうなんだろう…。

Kakuta: “Well, I don’t know… Honestly, I’m a mess.” (cries) “I’m trying my best to accept something that I cannot accept. For me, this isn’t the time to stop, and I don’t want to stop for a millimeter, a minute, or even a second. I want to speed up from here and seize life as a pro wrestler who seizes chances and doesn’t say ‘if the opportunity happens to come my way’.”
