I thought I’d give the feature a shot in Tsurukame. It just increased the difficulty threefold.

Perhaps you‘re already aware of it but you can also click on the kanji to show it in the standard font if it‘s too hard to recognize. It‘s hard in the beginning but having multiple fonts in your WaniKani reviews is definitely worth it for recognizing kanji in the long run imo

My guess was 本 but it’s got some strokes I can’t quite grok with that kanji…

Haha! No, I hadn’t realized that. It was my first time trying it. Thanks. I do think it’s a great idea to be familiar with these other fonts, so I’m going to stick with it.

I think technically the first one has the correct number of strokes to be 米 (also taught on the same level as 弟, so it would make sense to come up in the same review round) but I would not have recognized it if that’s it.

I believe it was during the Heian period. The kids are calling it “hiragana”.

From what I’ve read about neurology, changing up things like this builds long-term retrieval. I didn’t know Tsurukame had this feature. I just turned it on and I’m excited to use it! … I don’t think I’ll turn on Armed Banana until I’m a lot better, though.

Iirc that specific font is called ‘armed banana’ if anyone’s interested. There was a big thing about it when Jitai came out. People were debating whether it was worth having in there because it’s so illegible but it taught me to really look at the strokes and made my reading better for it personally i think. I started in the earliwr levels and it helps seeing the simpler bits in Armed Banana so you get a better idea of how they’re gonna look later

Seriously though, given all the times I’ve seen extra little asides in manga that were barely decipherable, I’d say it might be worth it. Obviously, a broader literacy is important to the WK community, so why not go for it?
