This is an informal book club. Read at your own pace and use the space here to ask questions, post reactions, and get hyped about reading this legendary manga!
The volume quoted is for the Tankobon edition and other editions will vary. Quote chapter numbers in the thread! If you need to quote a page number, you’ll need to reference it from the start of the chapter.
If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for this volume need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture still fall into this category. It helps to include a label of what chapter / page you’re on.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled.
Any information from later volumes, anime and film needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I really enjoyed this one! It was also easy for me to understand. I love how Haruko stood up for Sakuragi when the other girls were talking behind his back - that was so wholesome :')
Also, I can’t believe that I trusted Sakuragi to listen to the captain and do the dribble shoot (is that what it’s called?) lmaooo - of course, that was a feint, and he was going for the slam dunk
I was also really excited for Sakuragi to move on from the basics and start practicing other things, so I totally get his excitement about it! I was a throwball player long back in school, and I remember how long and frustratingly boring it was to learn the basics before I was allowed to play with others ahaha.
YESSSS, I love that part! Isn’t it the layup shot he was learning? The one that he calls the 庶民シュート right?
One time I was watching a random JP youtube video I found. I think it was like a large group of friends reminiscing on childhood manga, and then they did a little like quiz game together on it. And one of the questions was “What does Sakuragi Hanamichi call the layup shot” and I was like I KNOW, I KNOW
hsjsjjs omg turns out I’m just naive - never gonna fall for his antics again ahahaha
Oh this one was just called ドリブルシュート actually. They’re different ones I think! The captain asks Rukawa to show him how it’s done, and then Sakuragi had to follow, but apprently it was a layman’s shot for him (I mean, we gotta jump high to impress Haruko don’t we)
haha, wait, prath have a look again, I think what you’re remembering as layman’s shot is 庶民シュート . I think it’s in there when he’s muttering to captain, like of course I can do this simpleton/layman’s shot . I wouldn’t have remembered it as an iconic moment - thanks @TheNerdyNova
The Kanzenban edition did full colour for the first page and then the red highlights for the rest (only the first and occasional chapters get that treatment)
OMG they are all such children, throwing the ball at each other. The problem is (I think) captain started it in the last chapter and then Sakuragi takes it to another level. I love the reactions when Rukawa dishes back:
I felt bad for Sakuragi and was rooting for him, but it was a bit funny, especially when the ball slammed back on Sakuragi’s face TT (I’M SORRY). But I think he’s getting really close to the net now compared to when he tried it for the first time!
Really happy to see him practicing alone in the playground though (I sound like the captain lol). I’m excited because even this little detail tells us that he’s slowly changing his attitude and not giving up when he can’t do something.
So far, we’ve only encountered a couple of characters, so I can’t wait to see more of the game and the team dynamics!
replies
Yeah, I love everyone’s shocked expressions after Rukawa got his revenge. That was gold
私のことトロイ女と思ってるでしょう - What’s a ‘トロイ’ woman? I tried to understand this from a google search, but I still didn’t get it
Haruko playing basketball is my Fav thing ever about this volume!!!
I also really loved the art on page 59 - riding a cycle has never looked that good before
Also, after watching sakuragi practice the layman shot, I really want to go out there and try playing basketball now. I have this problem every time I read a sports manga, but I love the thrill and energy when the characters play the game!
Jisho.org lists トロイ as “slow; sluggish”, or “dull; stupid; thickheaded”. Different google searches and discussions in Japanese showed the same results, someone who’s slow, not very smart. Haruko maybe felt he was babying her a little bit and downplaying her skill
YEAHHHHH, the shots of him riding the bicycle are so sick!! I think I remember once seeing a japanese playlist that said something like: “Songs Rukawa would listen to while riding his bicycle”
OMG the dream sequence with the ball turning to a cat and Haruko getting her brother’s face was so funny I laughed so hard
I took the アメとムチ (sugar and stick) as like the English carrot and stick.
Sakuragi is getting serious now, I’m so curious who the new guy is. I’m not quote sure what to make of 要チェック but I’m guessing that will get clarified in the next chapter…
!!! I just realised I forgot to write here after I finished reading the 22nd chapter ahaha, and I also finished the 23rd chapter thinking I’d already updated you
ch 22
sameee this was hilarious
I think this means something like “watch me closely” - atleast in the next chapter I feel like this makes sense to me. Like look out for someone’s skills or watch their game? I read it last week, so I’m still not very sure and want to reread it, but just leaving my thoughts here anyways.
I can’t wait to read the 24th chapter actually because I have a feeling that we might see a match soon
Dawg I remember this confusing me so much when I first met him too (not that I 1000% understand it now either lol)
It probably will make more sense over the next chapter or so, but here’s some hopefully helpful(?) added context to keep in mind
I believe you are onto it with the whole, watching out or looking closely at something. Not like a “look at me closely” but a “ohh that guys got good defense, keep that in mind and look out for it” kind of thing. It could also mean “something that needs to be checked out or investigated”.
But I think the overall idea of, a point to look into/keep in mind is the most accurate
