Sentence Question on Vocab

I read

“サーモンは目玉もおいしいですよ”

But isn’t this incorrect? It’s read as “Salmon is a delicious eyeball too.”

Rather “サーモンの目玉もおいしいですよ” is correct, right?

This would be a lot easier in conversation, but it could be read as “As for for salmon, the eyeball also is delicious.” The previous convo could have been about other fish or other eyeballs. Other fish is more likely though I think.

It’s a common misconception that は marks the subject/actor of a sentence. It actually marks the topic. Like Dio-Berry said, for comprehension, it’s safe to assume it has the nuance of “As for ___…”. A lot of the times it does override the が particle and marks the subject of the sentence when it is also the focus, but you shouldn’t assume that it always does.

Nice!! Thanks to you and @DIO-Berry I get the point now. The topic was fish and salmon was one of them. So they are referring to eyeballs, and therefore, salmon is a delicious eyeball too.

Yeah, the thing that throws us off with this is the も in place of が – otherwise the subject would be more obvious, but…people need to know that eyeballs are also delicious (true, so I’m told) I guess… If it was a simple non-contrasting statement about eyeballs with が, it would be clearer. But it’s good practice with contextualization!

To me the most obvious interpretation of the も is that the speaker is saying that for salmon, it’s not just the fish meat that tastes good, even the eyeballs are tasty.

(Don’t worry too much about trying to figure out は in isolated sentences - it’s a notoriously tricky bit of grammar, and mostly you get the hang of it by seeing lots of examples over time and coming back and rereading grammar explanations every so often.)

Ah! I hadn’t really thought of it before, but even “even” is often a good analog in English for 「も」 も! :+1:

unrelated, but aren’t eyeballs a little too squishy? ^._-.

They’re slimy and have a bit of a crunch, but if you can get over the gross texture the taste isn’t bad.
