I’ve often seen rōmaji furigana (漢字【kanji】, for example), which is sort of similar!
Not if they say “hey, we don’t offer support for extensions beyond this particular set - if you install them you’re on your own”! There are definitely ways for them to allow custom extensions without having to worry too much.
I see where you’re coming from 
and of course this is Discourse’s business decision. But having worked for a company that sells a software product, and having read support emails, to me it makes sense that they would want to keep the customization to a bare minimum for anyone who isn’t paying extra for it.
I most enjoy when they use furigana to entirely change the meaning of a word. I don’t have any examples at hand, but I’m thinking of how sometimes you see something like 「敵」 with the furigana 「ともだち」, or something like that.

Ooh, that does look nice.
I’ve been seeing and using 素晴らしい (すばらしい) as my main method. Haven’t noticed anyone putting partial words in brackets. Hmm…
But yeah, that does look really nice.
That looks beautiful! For me, typing it the first way under “basic” at the very top would be the easiest, but that’s a lot of great functionality! (Especially the “pattern matching” varieties.)

I waded through the threads on CommonMark Discourse and Discourse Meta to look for updates on this.
On CommonMark, the consensus right now seems to be that ruby will not be included in CommonMark 1.0 as they are trying to finish the 1.0 spec and they consider ruby to be an extension that isn’t core to CommonMark:
In addition, a Japanese person posted their opinion about which characters should be used to denote ruby text, which I thought was pretty interesting:

^^^ Thanks for the update. I was wondering where things stood, and was thinking about testing to see if something had been updated at some point… even if just whitelisting of the ruby tags.

FYI… <ruby> tags and [lang] attributes are now supported in the forums!
Furigana:
<ruby lang="ja"><rb>漢字</rb><rt>かんじ</rt></ruby>
<span>直す</span> (defaults to Chinese rendering)
