Daily reading done 
Did heaps of reading over the last 24h. Finished The Jam Maker! The story was less about jam than I hoped lol! But it was still great. Also read some Jon-San and started the Meditation series. The first episode is great, 一石二鳥 because I’m focussing on daily meditation as my September challenge. I’m doing well! So for a while I’m going to do Jon-San and Meditation then decide what to read next. Maybe Kona’s Big Adventure!

I also read the DS’s お知らせ since I got a new one today (apparently the previous owner never walked around with it in sleep mode enough to get 100+ steps on it in a single day and so never got the one about game coins; I’m pretty sure they’re useless now, though). The only reason I didn’t read VII’s 取扱説明書 is that I forgot they’re on the cartridges with 3DS games until I was ready to turn in.

Anyways, yup, I ended up going with VII after all. I’d heard it was very long, but if the previous owner had finished it in 108:20 at most, then it’s not as long as I was imagining. (More like 135 hrs, but I’m still not sure I’d consider that very long as opposed to simply long.) In any case, they’d used all three save slots. I went and deleted all of them before starting my own.
Seven’s JP default name is アルス, which I don’t particularly like. His EN one is Auster, which I do, but not so much when spelled in kana. But Auster is close to Aster in spelling, so I wound up with シオン (Aster tataricus), and only hours later realised it was the same as my Nine. I was thinking of Shion No.6 lmao (In my defence! This Shion and Celestrian Shion are different genders! Also I never had a kanji spelling for Celestrian Shion’s name.)
Anyway, I find it hilarious that monsters that, more often than not, will flee the first chance they get will chase after you on the map. Like, what are you even doing?? (笑)

Finished my book club reading for the week and a chapter of manga that I started… at some point… I don’t exactly remember… heh. I’ve hardly read any manga this week, which feels a little weird. Not sure what my reading plan is the next week, but I’ve got some time off coming up! I’ll be at a big ol’ house on the coast with some friends for a few days, then back at home for a few days to recuperate before going back to work. I’m sure there will be a lot of shenanigans, but I’m looking forward to doing some reading by the ocean. It’s simply the best!
Also, I seem to have accidentally given myself the perfect day off for the Autumn Readathon the following week, so good job to me!!!

Not listed - Strange Neighbor and Streamer. I hit 10 chapters of streamer, and thinking of typical chapter production where one one thing is resolved and a new issue of some sort is introduced every chapter to keep readers hooked, I think that the chapters aren’t split. ふるや is super obviously split via the chapter titles, but it’s also clear with how it being split into 3 (very short) parts doesn’t make a lot of sense. Also, I’m not sure if this changed or I didn’t track it well, but streamer only has 10 free chapters?? The 71 others would be kind of expensive, so idk if I’ll continue on that basis. X回目 only has 5 coin chapters and Strange neighbor only has 10 coin chapters. Tora also has 35… I guess I’ll put streamer on hold for now and come back to it if I win the coin lottery or something (possible).
For X回目, I decided to read through chapter 12. It only has 24 chapters total. It’s possible that it’s equivalent to about 3 volumes of manga if it’s supposed to be only 120p per vol, but I think 12ch/vol could also logistically make sense and feels fine to me to count as a volume.
If you’ve been reading my posts, you might notice that this is the first night since starting 夜分 that I haven’t read it. I only have 2-3 chapters left in vol 5, but I already ordered a physical secondhand version. I’m trying really hard to be good and just wait for it to arrive. Hopefully it will come tomorrow. Although today, I received vols 7/8, so I previewed them. I’m not sure if I’m totally along for the ride, but there should be some touching stuff at least plus some chapters with my favorite side characters.
Vampire continues to be fun. Mofusand has all the 語呂合わせ days. Furuya has a fruitloop. Meshi is dragging into one of my least favorite arcs in the anime, but oh well.
I also finished Mushishi. It was as good as I was expecting. I’m not totally sure if I want to go back and read vol 4 while I continue to look for the other vols I’m missing. Maybe I should check Mercari…
I’m thinking of reading Card Captor Sakura and Vampir at lunch tomorrow. I stocked up on cup noodles, so I don’t need to spend time outside grabbing food at least. I also need to catch up on the JoJo book club. I nearly had some time today but I micronapped by accident, whoops

Read chapters 32 & 33 - bit of a late read today but one more chapter to go! It seems Ranpo’s revenge plot isn’t quite fully revealed yet, but so far he has been very creative with it, the title of the last chapter certainly leaves a lot to the imagination - will look forward to what tomorrow brings!

Caught up on the latest chapter of 月はタピオカみたいに. A heavy hitting backstory chapter that I think was extremely well done. This series continues to surprise and delight! Also read a bit of my zombie yuri before I had to stop for the evening.
Got a lot done and am almost ready for my trip. Can’t wait to read amidst the sound of the surf!

Read the final chapter, chapter 34 = book complete!!
And that means, revenge complete! That last chapter is kind of haunting. I’m sure Ranpo was sitting at his writing desk thinking “okay I’ve made this messed up revenge tale… but how can I make it even more messed up??” 
The story lost me a bit in that mid-beginning area but once the revenge-plot section got underway it was as if Ranpo had cut the brakes and let everything loose. After the middle it picks up a lot!
And looking at the differences between his version and the original version it basically picks up once he makes a hard left deviation from the original plot. Sorry original story, but I think Ranpo improved on it by a good margin.
Finished just in time for the 孤島の鬼 club starting up on Natively tomorrow
(which is more Ranpo… of course)
It was a special day yesterday so I was distracted by all the happenings and did exactly zero reading. And zero Wanikani lessons and zero reviews. Whoops! Today I read コナの大冒険、第一話. This is quite momentous actually. It was a breeze and I knew almost every kanji, and the grammar was 100% easy and familiar. I’ve come so far, so proud to see my progress!!
My Satori Journey
This is why it’s so momentous: read on. When I first subscribed to Satori it was from August 2020 until Jan 2021. I think I first began learning Japanese in late 2019. Anyway in those days I did Human Japanese 1 & 2 and moved on to Satori Reader. But my only solid kanji strategy was to use RTK1, focussing on keyword to kanji production by drawing, and I didn’t learn any readings, or practice kanji > keyword, and naturally that all didn’t lead me anywhere. Well, I did get very good at making mnemonics and becoming familiar with 100s of kanji and radicals which has been super useful for WK. but it didn’t help me learn to read kanji, and honestly my reading in general was extremely beginner. HJ intermediate didn’t cover enough grammar to get stuff like Kona’s Big Adventure so it was a struggle. I felt Satori had too many kanji for me to read it easily and so I focussed on speaking by memorising vocab scraped from JapanesePod101 and occasional tutor lessons and continued grinding RTK1 production. Eventually I burned out & got over it when none of that really worked, and my life situation drastically changed too and I stopped my Japanese studies altogether in around December 2022. All the way until July 2025.
For a lot of 2022 I tried to magically absorb Japanese by immersion in content I didn’t understand. This included listening to Kona’s Big Adventure without studying it. I just listened over and over and over again, hoping the words would sink in and make sense through context. I must have learned some things, but overall I only got the general gist of the story that way.
SO, now coming back to this story after a few years, but with Japanese learning strategies that are way more powerful than what I had access to before, chapter 1 seemed like a breeze.
I could have used the time taken to write this post to read another 2 chapters lol. But I think it’s important to reflect on these sort of things. Journalling about the journey is a part of the journey and part of my strategy to stay motivated and focussed and remain on task.
I’m excited to come at this story for a second time!
