7 Pages of クマとカラス today but it felt like more because of the amount of kanji I had to look up. I was right yesterday to be apprehensive about these humans turning up
It was tricky today but if I were to focus on the little victories I’d say I’m getting better at slowing down and actually making sure I work through a sentence instead of getting flustered by all the stuff I don’t know. Plus all the look ups meant that I at least got to play the ‘how messy can I write a kanji before the dictionary doesn’t recognise it’ game today. It always amazes me how good it is at working out my scribbles haha!

Daily reading done
Amazing how many new combinations there can be of kanji I can read and understand already but have a slightly different or more specific meaning. Anyway it’s pretty sweet to be able to guess the reading and meaning of so many new compound kanji words. Also I loooooove the drums in the sound effects of this chapter. So atmospheric gaaaah
Wahoo yaaaaay!!! At natively level 42 (well, rather, 42??) this story is far and away the most difficult thing I’ve read in Japanese, but I did read it and I did understand it, which feels pretty good. Would’ve been way harder / more annoying reading in my regular mode, ie dictionary app alongside, and not with the instant yomitan lookups. I went and read the English original after, and while I didn’t pick up every last nuance from the jp, if for example I had to take a quiz or write an essay on it I 100% could. Cool This is a good reminder for me (and maybe for you, fellow 読者?) that occasionally I should just try reading something that seems wayyyy above my pay grade.
I finished chapter 3 yesterday of ハッピー・ラブリー・エブリデイ!and accidentally started chapter 5 today . I guess one of the downsides of re-reading in Japanese is that it’s super easy to skip content since you already know what happens. Did a bit less reading and instead just did a bunch of journaling to practice output.
Read a nice chunk of 裏世界ピクニック2 this evening. I totally forgot about a few of the monsters in this section; perfect timing for Halloween spooky season! Today didn’t end up being a big reading day, esepecially since most of it was spent helping a friend move, but I got a lot of other forms of study in so I feel good about it. I do want to have a cozy teashop reading evening this week, though.
For some reason when I read this I imagined a flaming “hell girl” falling off, like, a bench to the side… and I thought you should know that.
Finished my reread of 呪ワレタ少年 彼の名を言ってはいけない chapter 1, and looking forward to continuing with the reast of the book.
I’ve always enjoyed reading novels slightly more than manga, and I guess this still applies with Japanese…
Additionally, I feel like this is a really great book for looking up words, because I understand all the used grammar and I can really just focus on mining into Anki.
That said, I’m very good at adding words to Anki, but not so great at actually remembering to review them…
Today I finished chapter 7; and it left me thinking: shouldn’t people be considered innocent until proven guilty? I any case it’s just a novel, but to lack presumption of innocence feels a bit weird.
Looking forward to do some progress on the final chapter (of Mayuri’s route) tomorrow.
And a second section done.
I’m beginning to understand why the reading was so hard before. So many grammar points are intermingled with one another in ways I did not fathom. Now that I’m unraveling them bit by bit I do start to enjoy the structure and perceive how every kana count…
Speed is not longer a metric I’ll be interested in for a while, just having a good comprehension is a good challenge and also very rewarding.
女妖
Read chapter two - this is weird yet intriguing. It feels a bit folklore-esque - such as the tales of foxes impersonating someone to trick people. But the main character is so depressed and full of self-loathing it feels like it could have been written by Osamu Dazai rather than Ranpo.
Yessssss success! Congrats on the milestone!
But yeh it wasn’t easy at all, think it’s the hardest thing I’ve read by now too.
I finished reading 黒1 today. I enjoyed it quite a lot! It slowly reveals the story/world building by sort of working backwards through time and the world turns out to be pretty dark with the main character being the only person who isn’t aware of the dangers.
It didn’t really touch on the answers that I was most interested in by the end of the first volume but there are 2 more. Unfortunately I’m trying to be strict with myself and not buy any more manga until I’ve read what I already own. I really don’t want to get into the habit of having piles of unread books like I have with my physical books , so the mystery will have to wait a while!
