Aria: the masterpiece volume 3 โ€“ progress report
Yesterday: Continued up to page 128.
Today: Read up to page 143, finished chapter 24.

Finished chapter 24, ended up feeling indifferent towards it.
While I enjoyed Alicia not having any of Akiraโ€™s cr***, this chapter also featured one small scene with one of my least favourite tropes(?) in media that is especially prevalent in Japanese media.

I canโ€™t describe it very well but itโ€™s when (Iโ€™ll just use random names from now on) โ€˜Peterโ€™ โ€“ usually someone of โ€˜higher rankโ€™ or mentor or parent or older sibling โ€“ is acting in a constantly somewhat maliciously teasing or tough-love (sometimes including threats or hitting) or cold tsundere-ish kind of manner towards โ€˜Samโ€™ and an outsider person โ€˜Maryโ€™ amusingly looking at their interaction and pointing out โ€˜that Peter is such a good person (deep within).โ€™

I canโ€™t think of many examples on the fly, so Iโ€™ll just use two from the material Iโ€™m currently reading. One would be this chapter with Akiraโ€™s behaviour towards Aika and Alicia saying that Akira is a good person and another one Touya teasing Sakura all the time and meanwhile Tomoyo and Yukito both saying that theyโ€™re such a wonderful pair of siblings.
I have encountered this โ€˜tropeโ€™ at least a dozen times by now, and I highly dislike it. To me it feels like โ€˜Maryโ€™ is not even considering how a cold or hot-and-cold treatment towards โ€˜Samโ€™ may have affected them and in a way immediately siding with the questionable or even outright abusive โ€˜Peterโ€™ and calling that person โ€˜goodโ€™ of all things. Meh. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

:snowflake: Week 4 - Jan 23rd to 29th :snowflake:

Last week was my first time reading a manga in just two sittings, this week I read ๆ—ฅๅธธ(ใซใกใ˜ใ‚‡ใ†) volume 1, and a bit over half of ๅค่ฆ‹(ใ“ใฟ)ใ•ใ‚“ใฏใ€ใ‚ณใƒŸใƒฅ็—‡(ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†)ใงใ™ใ€‚ volume 1. Iโ€™ll also be reading a few more chapters of the latter tonight. ๆ—ฅๅธธ(ใซใกใ˜ใ‚‡ใ†) turned out to be funnier to me as a manga than as an anime (and the anime is hilarious) so I canโ€™t help but smile when thinking about reading the rest of the series  Iโ€™ll have to try out CITY too (aslo by ใ‚ใ‚‰ใ‚ใ‘ใ„ใ„ใก).

I initially meant to read ๅค่ฆ‹(ใ“ใฟ)ใ•ใ‚“ with the BBC in Feburary but itโ€™s my last non-ใ‚ˆใคใฐ manga with full furigana coverage and so I wanted to read it before I got started reading something without that level of support. Iโ€™m still planning to keep an eye on the book club threads and Iโ€™m bookmarking dialogue I might want to revisit with the club:) Having also seen the anime version of ๅค่ฆ‹(ใ“ใฟ)ใ•ใ‚“ใฏใ€ใ‚ณใƒŸใƒฅ็—‡(ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†)ใงใ™ Iโ€™m noticing that I enjoy the manga more than the anime in this case as well. I didnโ€™t expect Iโ€™d discover a general preference for manga over anime but Iโ€™m starting to suspect that might be the case. I guess Iโ€™ll probably like novels even better once I get around to reading them :eyes:

Did you have to buy the japanese version of the game or does it have a jp option? I adore klonoa and have been eyeing up the remake on switch and being able to do a little jp practice would be an incentive to pick it up

Words of the day
  • ใ ใ‚‰ใ‘ใ‚‹ = to feel lazy; to feel languid. Sounds like ๆ€ (ใ ใ‚‹)ใ„ changed to a verb, to me.
  • ใƒใƒ“ใƒ‰ใƒณใƒจใƒผใƒ‰ = povidone iodine. The latter part, ใƒจใƒผใƒ‰ can be written in Kanji = ๆฒƒๅบฆ(ใ‚ˆใ†ใฉ) = iodine (ๆฒƒ็ด (ใ‚ˆใ†ใ)).
  • ใ‚ฆใƒ„ใƒœใ‚ซใ‚บใƒฉ = pitcher plant. Full Kanji is ้ซ่‘›(ใ†ใคใผใ‹ใšใ‚‰).
    • ้ญ(ใ†ใคใผ) = a quiver of arrows. Not sure about ใ†, but ๅฃบ(ใคใผ) is a pot.
    • ่‘›(ใ‹ใšใ‚‰) (ใ‹ใฅใ‚‰) = vine; creeper plant
  • ๅฐฑ(ใค)ใ = to be appointed to work. ไป•ไบ‹(ใ—ใ”ใจ)ใซๅฐฑ(ใค)ใ in context.
  • ็ฒ˜(ใญใฐ)ใ‚‹ = to be sticky; to be glutinous. Kanji from Level 47.
  • ไธŽ(ใใฟ)ใ™ใ‚‹ = to take sides with. Has Furigana in context. Of course it sounds like ็ต„(ใใฟ).
  • ๅ‹‡(ใ„ใ•)ใพใ—ใ„ = gallant; in high spirits. ๅ‹‡(ใ„ใ•)ใ‚€ is in Level 15 = to be in high spirits.

  • ่ง’่†œ(ใ‹ใใพใ) = cornea of eye. Probably like horn or epidermis.
  • ็ต่†œ(ใ‘ใคใพใ) = conjunctiva of eye. Why the Kanji though? Full of vessel networks?
  • ้ฃŸๅกฉ(ใ—ใ‚‡ใใˆใ‚“) = cooking salt
    • ็”Ÿ็†็š„้ฃŸๅกฉๆฐด(ใ›ใ„ใ‚Šใฆใใ—ใ‚‡ใใˆใ‚“ใ™ใ„) = normal saline solution, i.e. 0.9% NaCl

    • ๅ‰ฏไบคๆ„Ÿ็ฅž็ตŒ(ใตใใ“ใ†ใ‹ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚“ใ‘ใ„) = parasympathetic
    • ไบคๆ„Ÿ(ใ“ใ†ใ‹ใ‚“) is indeed mutual sympathy or rapport, but I am not sure where else the word can be used.
  • ๆญŒๅฃฐ(ใ†ใŸใ”ใˆ) = singing voice
  • ้…ช้…ธ(ใ‚‰ใใ•ใ‚“) = butyric acid (C4 carboxylic acid). First Kanji is from Level 59, dairy (milk product) => ้…ช่พฒ(ใ‚‰ใใฎใ†) (dairy farming).
  • ่บซ(ใฟ)ใ˜ใ‚ใŽ = slight movement. ใ˜ใ‚ใ˜ใ‚ is to be gazed at, so people gets uneasy and move a little? Full Kanji is ่บซๅ‹•(ใฟใ˜ใ‚)ใŽ.

  • ไธ‡ไบ‹ไผ‘(ใฐใ‚“ใ˜ใใ‚…ใ†)ใ™ = There is nothing more that can be done. Third Kanji is just hard to guess reading when thinking as another verb.

I guess I have the same sentiment. Also, the whole trope and unprogressing story thing.

I am also looking at this, and this thread; but I prefer not to have fantasy elements.

Indeed, I am concerned quite a bit when I canโ€™t read an email properly. Sometimes I feel itโ€™s not really about vocabularies, but rather about getting enough of what is required.

Similarly, I have a concern over manga vs novel, even if I donโ€™t mind reading a few pages of text.

Hmm, thereโ€™s something about the beginning of the end stage of the books in this series that just makes me want to quickly finish the book so I can read something else. I blame Saikawa. Heโ€™s kinda annoying.

Also reread the epilogue of Honzuki 15 because it has a scene I like a lot. Has been thinking about it lately, so I figured why not read it again :3

I started a new book :see_no_evil: This one is an impulse buy from my Christmas book shopping spree, based on nothing but cover, summary and a few random reviews. Itโ€™s supposed to be a mystery, but the author has also written horror if I remember correctly, and the first section that I read was definitely the most horror that Iโ€™ve read in Japanese so far. While nothing actually happened, the atmosphere had me holding my breath throughout. Curious how it continues. In the part I read, a school boy of indeterminate age dares himself to explore a dark, creepy forest in his neighbourhood. When a neighbour tries to discourage him with a scary story about something that supposedly happened there, he decides to prove to himself that such stories canโ€™t scare him, and he goes exploring againโ€ฆat night. :scream:

I read some more of Kindaichi Shounen. Iโ€™m surprised that the manga is rather easy I thought a detective manga would be actually hard to read. It seems the manga will be one case per volume.

January 29th!

I read a chapter of Teasing Master Takagi-san, and also a chapter of Monthly Girlsโ€™ Nozaki-kun.
Iโ€™m enjoying Monthly Girlsโ€™ Nozaki-kun a lot, but I think Iโ€™m going to have to skip the offshoot club if there is one, because I donโ€™t have the bandwidth to keep up with as many clubs as Iโ€™m currently trying to, and with 14 volumes in the series so far its going to be too much of a commitment I thinkโ€ฆ

Yall on here reading some fun ass books but I am not ready for that so I am onto Volume 2 of โ€œJapanese Short Stories for Beginnersโ€, which is a graded reader I think at level N4. I read the second section of ไบŒ้Šญ้Š…่ฒจ | L37 and finished the first weekโ€™s reading for ใ“ใฎๆœฌใ‚’็›—ใ‚€่€…ใฏ | L46?? (note - it doesnโ€™t start for another week but Iโ€™m reading ahead a bit due to scheduling chaos on my end). 30ish pages in and I think itโ€™s closer to 35 than 46, and maybe even a smidge lower? The difficulty is almost exclusively from vocab, but all the uncommon words get furiganaโ€™d the first time round. In any case, I think the ABC readers will keep up no problem. Iโ€™m enjoying the story and looking forward to reading more.

I also impulse bought ็ˆ†ๅผพ | L35?? because there was a 40% off coupon for it on Rakuten. I need to stop buying books. I donโ€™t even want to know what my true ็ฉ่ชญ count is, as I know I havenโ€™t been recording books perfectly. :see_no_evil:

Lost three days to a migraine and lingering headache, so Iโ€™m behind on my manga of the week. I donโ€™t want to push another week out so Iโ€™ll plan to finish both volumes next week.

I am so glad I swapped books for Jan and Feb. Iโ€™m reading a book I got probably a decade or more ago โ€œBreaking into Japanese literatureโ€ which has several short stories from Natume Souseki and Akutagawa Ryuunosuke. I canโ€™t say I care for them much, but whatโ€™s been really interesting is how language has changed since the early 1900s. Words like ใ“ใ“ใ€ใ‚‚ใกใ‚ใ‚“, etc used the kanji, and ๅ…ฅใ‚‹ was ้€™ๅ…ฅใ‚‹ โ€“ Iโ€™d guess that the first characters pronunciation (ใฏ) eventually got absorbed into ๅ…ฅ over time, thus ๅ…ฅใ‚‹ vs ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใ‚‹ pronunciation differences.

The story choices are, uh, interesting for a book geared at introducing people to literature. Several trigger warning apply.

Other than that, Persona 3 released on PC and Iโ€™ve been playing the female route in Japanese. sadly the quick save feature doesnโ€™t work in the middle of dialogue, only in the overworld.

Curious what those are - feel free to put behind a spoiler or toggle of course! I donโ€™t know Souseki to be very problematic (by reputation, only read one thing by him) but Akutagawa isโ€ฆinteresting. I canโ€™t say I enjoy his writing at all, but I donโ€™t avoid it entirely like Yumeno (another classic author).

Yeah itโ€™s mainly Akutagawa. Iโ€™m finishing up โ€œin a groveโ€ and itโ€™s got rape, murder, and attempted suicide.

Souseki read more like Edgar Allan Poe, which does still have sensitive content ( depression, suicide) but somehow feels lessโ€ฆdirect I guess?

Edit: should add at least in โ€œin a groveโ€ the rape is not explicitly described, just stated to have occurred. I just find the choice of content to be an odd choice to introduce people to Japanese literature.
