What I'm reading

Manga version of 君たちはどう生きるか which I bought before knowing that Miyazaki was a film based on it but now look like a proper Ghibli nerd. I’m was intending to finish read it in it’s entirety over the Xmas holidays but people keep asking me to leave the house (!!!) so it looks like I’ll be finishing it in January. FINISHED 20/01/2022
ズッコケ恐怖体験 which is number 14 in the それいけズッコケ三人組 series that I started reading during the last challenge, but is the third volume that I will be reading of the series.
I’m also on volume 3 of こぐまのケーキ屋さん which I try to read a few pages of before bed each night.
I’ll also count any days when I play クレヨンしんちゃん『オラと博士の夏休み』~おわらない七日間の旅 because it’s very text/story heavy. FINISHED 3/01/2021
Also started reading コーヒーの絵本

Hi everyone,

Been studying Japanese for about a year and a half but just joined WK today to try and start catching up with my Kanji studies. Been trying to read more outside of textbooks recently and thought this challenge seems like a fun way to stay motivated and get into the habit of reading frequently.

What I'm reading

I am currently mainly reading よつばと!(will be trying to get through at least 1 chapter / day), but I have also started to read Haruki Murakami’s ねじまき鳥クロニクル (although at a very slow pace so far as there are a lot of Kanji I need to look up, but I’m thinking of making my goal reading ~1 page/day of this as well) and I try to read the news in Japanese from time to time as well.

Edit 5 Jan 2022: I have been listening to a lot of Japanese music recently and have been considering reading through and translating the lyrics to some of the tracks I listen to the most. If I end up doing it I will probably post the lyrics and translations here in case anyone wants to read them.

Progress

Jan 1 - よつばと! vol. 3 ch.17
Jan 2 - よつばと! vol. 3 ch.18 & 19
Jan 3 - よつばと! vol. 3 ch.20
Jan 4 - よつばと! vol. 3 ch.21 (Finished volume 3)
Jan 5 - よつばと! vol. 4 ch.22
Jan 6 - よつばと! vol. 4 ch.23
Jan 7 - Didn’t read :c

Hopefully i managed to work out how to format this properly ^^

Have you read the English version/are you familiar with his writing style? I ask because I tried reading that book and found the meandering and non-sequitur writing style to be immensely frustrating. It’s also a big jump up from よつばと from what I recall of it.
If you’re a fan of his or enjoying the book already feel free to disregard, of course.

I have read Norwegian wood and 1Q84 in english as well as one of his short stories (夜中の汽笛について…) in Japanese before and enjoyed them so I figured I’d give it a go.
You’re right it’s quite the jump up in difficulty from よつば but I like to have something more complicated to read to expand my vocabulary in addition to よつば which i can read more casually. I may be in a little bit over my head with this one though, if I find it’s too difficult to keep up with the story I may drop it for now and try again later.

I modified the calendars that I used in the Fall reading challenge that I got from @chrisosaurus on this post.

My Fall Reading challenge

Summary

The Fall reading challenge was the first time I was doing something like this. My goal for learning Japanese is to read Japanese media in its original language. More than a decade has passed since I started learning Japanese and I am still a beginner when it comes to reading. So I decided to try reading how I learnt in my native language- reading every day by pronouncing the words. I learnt to read early. I inherited my bookworm tendencies from my parents. Both of them liked to read and there were always books in my house. (I don’t really remember when I learnt to read. I just know that by the time I was 7, I was a smooth reader and challenging books above my supposed level.)

For the Fall reading challenge, I started with manga that I’ve already read in English. I do not stop to look up words so for now I am only reading manga with furigana. It is my hope that eventually I will be able to take off the “training wheels” and read the kanji directly. I started with Cheeky Angel (天使な小生意気) and when I finished that, I started both オトメン(乙男) and 会長はメイド様!I got frustrated reading 会長はメイド様!There were too many words so I went back to オトメン(乙男). I am almost finished volume 1 so I will continue that for the Winter reading challenge.

I continued with the reading every day because I enjoyed setting streaks. However, it is also good practice because I have found myself recognising kanji and vocabulary that I’ve learnt on WaniKani. So I intend to continue with this challenge in some form or another for months to come.

In the Fall challenge, I alternated between shounen and shoujo manga. So I may do the same for this challenge.
What I have read:

Hi, joining this one! I joined the previous two challenges and failed at both — this time I’m really going to set the goal of reading every day without fail. I’m currently on holiday and will be until the end of January, and have slowed down on WaniKani as well, so no excuses for me! I’ll also update every day for accountability :slightly_smiling_face:

Right now I’m reading 魔女の宅急便 in paperback form and ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂 on Bookwalker.

Have you started the Yokai Watch game already? It’s on my list of things that I’d like to play in the future. I used to play the mobile game (in English) so have some familiarity with the franchise through that and I’ve seen several people suggest it as a fun game for japanese learners.

Hi everyone,

I am starting right now with Japanese, and my level doesn’t allow me to read yet. Maybe I can join the challenge with a calender for beginner which I purchased a few weeks ago. That would be hard enough! がんばりますよ。

This is exactly what I am ready to do (and kind of started already!) I am as new to Manga as you can get (and the Japanese language for that matter), but I have been working my way through a page or two of よつばと! each day, and I’m very proud of that! It’s already a part of my study log daily goals, but I’m excited about this thread to also encourage me for two months at the very least! Excited!

You might enjoy the Tadoku graded readers - they’re free and many of them have audio so you can practice listening along as well.

Series listing with user ranked levels from Natively
Aoi (青い) - this is an example base level reader

A calendar is also good practice, but you might find yourself unchallenged by it before the end of the challenge!

Final Reflection Post

Goals

As usual, my primary goal is read something every day. I don’t want to get too ambitious this time of year, because work tends to take over my life during this time (although frankly, it’s been taking over my life on a much more consistent basis lately, so maybe this won’t really feel any different :upside_down_face:)

I feel like I don’t really have a specific focus for this challenge, either. There are a few things I’d like to read or work toward completing, but I’m also open to the idea of ditching all of those and doing something completely different xD I mainly just want to read what feels good to me in the moment.

Some ideas I have right now:

:snowflake: ハイ☆スピード!
I started this light novel in the Fall Challenge and got about two thirds of the way through - basically, it’s the light novel that Free! (the anime) is based on, which makes it special to me because that anime basically set me on the path to learning Japanese. I had a lot of fun reading it last challenge, but it’s also not something I want to rush or force myself to read if I’m in a bad mood. I want to enjoy ^^ And I may or may not be in the mindset to do that for most of this challenge, depending on work

:snowflake: 囀る鳥は羽ばたかない
I’m supposed to be reading this with the ongoing book club but :x I haven’t opened it for monthsss

:snowflake: 365日にっぽんのいろ図鑑 and まいにち暦生活 日本の暮らしを楽しむ365のコツ
I got these toward the end of the Fall Challenge - basically, they have short little blurbs each day talking about either a color or life in Japan. I’d like to read these entries daily ^^

:snowflake: MORE CUTE MANGA
I’m sure this will happen lol, I just found the cutest manga I need to buy as soon as it comes out in mid-January as if I don’t have enough cute manga already just kidding, there’s no such thing as too many cute manga
