Radicals resetting

Recently many “old” radicals reappear in lessons as if they’ve never been learned. It is annoying, since it increases unnecessary workload. If Wanikani could consider resetting some kanjis instead, that would make much more sense. The latest is “beforehand” radical that I’ve mastered level or two before, and now I’ve got it again on the table. Same radical, with the same meaning. It’s like 10th resurrected item, I think. Thank you.

i think you might be experiencing kanji recurring as radicals? i found it pretty surprising too the first ten or so times, but i found that those radicals are easier to learn!

Yeah, especially with the “beforehand” example, that does seem to be what is most likely happening. The beforehand kanji is learned in level 9 and then comes back as a radical in level 12.

@evarisotto There will be numerous times in WK that they do this. It’s to streamline the mnemonics later. Instead of later trying to make a mnemonic that uses mama, street and then three or four more radicals, some kanji will come back as radicals so that later mnemonics will be far less messy and easier to remember.

When the description in the mnemonic section starts with “This radical is the same as the kanji.“, then this (previously learned kanji now being used as a radical) will be the case.
