So far going pretty well except for a few grammar cards I added on BunPro today that I can’t keep in my head. I’ll have to do some further study on them tomorrow
Did well throughout the week, I’ve been working through Game Gengo’s Genki 1 grammar video. The explanations are 10/10 and I like the examples from video games.. it tickles the brain just right!
Keeping up with watching a Tokini Andy video per day, finishing with Quartet lesson 8 part 2 today. Woo! It’s been a while since I watched any Japanese video instruction, and it’s pretty cool to get back into it, especially after having already read the chapter some months back. Andy isn’t my favorite instructor by far (too many confusing jokes in his example sentences and sometimes not the best sentence structure imo, and a lil arrogant sounding imo), but I like that he works to the mainstream textbook unlike Cure Dolly and George (ik he has his own textbook but its slowwwww) My favorite instructor is the Tobira instructor Professor Christopher Schad, but idk if he will be teaching anything lower than N4 classes (cry) hopefully with new Tobira Intermediate he does, since I will probably not get to attend the University of Michigan to join a class!
How is Quartet for you? I’ve been wondering where to go once I finish Genki 2. (I’m only on L16 tho)
I have a Japanese teacher I see once a week and she suggested Quartet.
Did you do Genki beforehand if you don’t mind me asking?
And if so, how was the switch?
I have a long and checkered history with textbooks so I’m probably not the best example…over the course of 2.7ish years I did Japanese from Zero 1, to Genki 1 and 2, to Tobira Beginner 1 and 2 (for review), Quartet 1, Tobira (og edition), and just finished Quartet 2 this month. I have been a self studier and I prefer to deepen my understanding of concepts through textbook SRS. I liked Quartet 1, if you feel really good on the concepts of Genki (like N5-N4) then it’s a nice transition. It has interesting articles and doesnt feel too intense. I would probably go with it, especially since you have a teacher who presumably knows Quartet and can teach it well
Oh wow you really are a textbook learner, which one of those was your favorite?
I don’t like nor dislike Genki, kind of indifferent to it, so I just stuck with it instead of trying options!
good question! I think Tobira Beginner 1 and 2 were my academic favorites, mainly due to the corresponding video content and also that since it was my second time around with the concepts, my understanding went from a 60% hazy (post Genki) to a 95-99% “got it”. My personal favorite was Tobira OG since I found the articles interesting and boy was it a challenge. You were not handheld AT ALL, but I noticed my Japanese comprehension got REALLY good by the end of Tobira OG for what it’s worth. (Note: really good for someone studying N2ish now) If I were to recommend a path to anyone, I might recommend doing Japanese from Zero until you feel like you understand enough to get something out of Genki, then Tobira Beginner 1 and 2. I haven’t received the new Tobira Intermediate 1 to decide, and theres no corresponding video content to my understanding now, so I would probably stick with Quartet as of 2025. Quartet is like drinking a fine wine, versus Tobira OG which is like an intense whisky shot that punches you in the face but is supremely effective too. But most people would probably want to sink into Japanese instead of diving in to the deep end.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to do it, but I successfully got in another episode of Quartet 2. I’ve been just listening to the example sentences and skipping the dialogue portions since it’s a bit redundant, but I felt very confident on に間違いない and なんか so I sped along. The videos all get shorter from this point so it should take me less time per day which is okay. I kinda want to watch some Cure Dolly but time is a premium for me lately!! This is a cool challenge though I’m glad to dip my toe back into having goals and challenges for Japanese other than 'just do it"
Late response but yesterday indeed I continued on in my grammar work, I believe going forward his videos only do 3 grammar points, so if im feeling extra I can listen to more. maybe lol. It’s going well, I’m enjoying this challenge! I’m also keeping more up to date on completing my flashcards each day which is good, there are so many words to learn it’s imperative to keep that up as well. I hope my husband can make me a stamp card for my study blog!
This month I also had a bunch of things going on. If I do more grammar than usually, I consider the challenge successful. The days don’t really matter but are a nice bonus.
It’s amazing how time flies when you’re challenging! I’m glad I’ve been going through the Quartet chapter 10 videos since I do remember my brain feeling pretty mush like while going through it, numbers aren’t really my thing…
