when wk can add BASIC SRS features that are available in even a FREE software package like Anki…then maybe…Not sure if you reset or are a newer user at level 8…but when you start to get into the late teens and 20s…lots of things start to become apparent… wk is a semi ok product at a very HIGH price… Anki is FREE, you can buy RTK (kanji learning book) for what 25-30 dollars…but for 300 you get … wk but …
still no leech manager and still no undo button for typos… hmm…
budget...sure it must be super expensive for a small group of developers vs an individual programmer to develop an undo button or an app like flaming durtles....
same excuses from wk but they just keep reaping the benefits of paid users while not paying for the script writers making the platform usable with basic features (not all scripts are basic but some of them really are)… it’s shameful and not the most ethical thing for wk to do…the new author of smouldering spent their own money on a google dev account to help out others…wk should reimburse that!
such simple super basic things aren’t even a part of wk…maybe some fancy scripts or stats but still no leech manager no undo…wk is a mess… it seems like in the past year they jumped the shark and are so far behind now, compared with other srs systems, kitsun, bunpro…don’t see wk catching up…but they won’t catch up with by breaking what works for long time users…(not everyone uses scripts)…but a lot of us do (or did)… and taking features away and adding kana vocab…on and on…it’s just frustrating as WK could be something great…
but just my opinion but the mgmt/dev/people making decisions don’t seem to know what they want the product to be anymore and are not listening to the long time users with experience… WK could learn a LOT from how bunpro has grown over the past couple of years…the biggest difference…bunpro (even with a small dev team)…really listened and tried to work hard to implement features users requested, everything is open beta (none of the 2 week bs)… no system will ever be perfect but listen to your users…and devs should also be users…not just devs…suspect that may also be part of the problem…
for me…kitsun FTW! can undo typos, hibernate/suspend cards (leeches)…can move cards to different decks…has a summary page, with quick study on the summary page for the recent misses, has an app (oh yeah must be a huge company to be able to do that since budget is a wk problem)…oh yeah and it has a dark mode that lots of people ask for but no that’s too hard for wk to implement because it’s out of wk control and budget…(but somehow they spent a year developing kana vocab???)
Unless WK mgmt/devs stop and take a serious look at the issue globally…don’t see WK being able to go on (as somoene else said)…lots of good companies get destroyed by short sided or new mgmt ides trying to improve something for new users and forget about their existing and end up ruining the product…WK is on that road now (or seems to be)…if they don’t start rethinking their intent of the platform what are they teaching, kanji, vocab, kana, all the vocab to be able to read (adding a whole dictionary to wk???) [thought it was learn all the kanji/vocab in a year - which isn’t possible for most people] wk is in some serious trouble…
Things like all the effort from the script writers and people that make the 3rd party apps is one of the reasons wk has survived for so long…IMO…
really think WK devs/mgmt should seriously stop take a step back and good hard look look at their existing user base and see what they can do to get people to level 60 (both the paid monthly users and the lifetime users)… most people quit and don’t continue…has WK really spent the time to figure out why…? if the system was so great people wouldn’t quit in droves… yeah some people give up but very few actually make it to level 60… why do people quit??? Yeah some get bored…but why? what’s the root cause…I only went for so long because I paid for a lifetime membership…would have probably left 2 years ago as the leeches really bogged everything down…suspend would have been nice, but that’s not within wk control or budget (but anki is free…
) I will get to level 60 but over on kitsun… I came to learn kanji, not die with leeches and not be able to correct typos…even the old ibm selectrics had correction tape in the 1970s…but in 2023 an undo button is not within wks control or budget…
WK should take a good hard look at what it would take to retain users and get them to level 60 (learning the kanji) not quitting… that would in turn help keep profits up not down…eventually you run out of new users (guinea pigs)…and word gets around that the service isn’t so great… this is the chance for WK to really step up rethink what they want to do…teach kanji, or something else …they can recover but … the forecast isn’t great
meanwhile the individual free labor force from the script writers keeps wk from completely sinking…
