[No Longer Maintained] Flaming Durtles - Android app with offline support

since the old flaming is changing…might want to have the main post turned into a wiki / edit it and post a link to the replacement making it clear that this one is no longer or soon to be no longer supported and close the thread…(of course post the new thread in the main one)…sticky or something…

a shame wk keeps relying on users to make this platform usable… I already ditched WK and migrated everything to kitsun a while back because of the most recent major change…cuz got tired of things breaking…figured it was only a matter of time before the app died too!

Glad to hear that someone will keep it maintained…but wk really ought to be paying you @Joeni … they are charging their users monthly fees and yet you have to pay to be a google dev…(let alone the amount of personal time spent helping others…but wk continues to benefit financially from your work and other script writers)… just isn’t really right IMO…

anyhow…bring on the smouldering!!!

So the license says you can’t release the app under the Flaming Durtles name, but if it’s no longer available on Google Play, and someone wanted the original, for whatever reason, although I can’t really imagine why if there’s a perfectly good smouldering replacement, then if one were to throw a build of Flaming Durtles up on a fork on GitHub that people could download in order to side load over adb would that violate the original license?

Asking for a friend.

I presume if you just renamed the app Blazing Durtles, but make no other changes, that satisfies the license.

I also presume that if you have adb installed on your machine, you also likely have Android Studio and can just build it yourself, so it’s kind of moot.

It wouldn’t actually violate the licence itself, the issue would be that while the licence explicitly grants patent rights, it doesn’t grant trademark rights and so it would be a trademark issue, not a licence one.

As I understand it, aye - licence basically says you can do what you want provided you don’t call it Flaming Durtles or release it under his name. You can use it commercially, release it under a stronger licence, etc. the only requirement is that you disclose any changes you’ve made (you don’t have to share the code though) and include the original licence notices.

Regulars can edit the title, including someone else’s threads, and @Joeni is one of the them too.

Turning someone else’s post into a wiki can only be done by @ Mods but I don’t think this is needed.

I believe @ Mods can Mark as Answer as well.

I’d always leave something like this up to the mods, I only ever change titles if there’s a rule break on them (swearing, etc.) typically

all I meant was make it obvious at the very beginning (since most people won’t read through 2k+ threads to find out the flame has died haha)…

still think wk should be paying you programmers!!

Wanikani is great product at a very decent price. Especially with all the discounts they do. The only reason these apps exist is because some of us want MOAR features. Especially since WK is so beloved and the wonderful community we have here there are so many side projects that are created that are out of WK’s control (and budget).

So I don’t think any of this falls on WK responsibility. But it definitely falls on us as the users to thank these developers for giving us an even better experience.

when wk can add BASIC SRS features that are available in even a FREE software package like Anki…then maybe…Not sure if you reset or are a newer user at level 8…but when you start to get into the late teens and 20s…lots of things start to become apparent… wk is a semi ok product at a very HIGH price… Anki is FREE, you can buy RTK (kanji learning book) for what 25-30 dollars…but for 300 you get … wk but …

still no leech manager and still no undo button for typos… hmm…

budget...sure it must be super expensive for a small group of developers vs an individual programmer to develop an undo button or an app like flaming durtles....

same excuses from wk but they just keep reaping the benefits of paid users while not paying for the script writers making the platform usable with basic features (not all scripts are basic but some of them really are)… it’s shameful and not the most ethical thing for wk to do…the new author of smouldering spent their own money on a google dev account to help out others…wk should reimburse that!

such simple super basic things aren’t even a part of wk…maybe some fancy scripts or stats but still no leech manager no undo…wk is a mess… it seems like in the past year they jumped the shark and are so far behind now, compared with other srs systems, kitsun, bunpro…don’t see wk catching up…but they won’t catch up with by breaking what works for long time users…(not everyone uses scripts)…but a lot of us do (or did)… and taking features away and adding kana vocab…on and on…it’s just frustrating as WK could be something great…

but just my opinion but the mgmt/dev/people making decisions don’t seem to know what they want the product to be anymore and are not listening to the long time users with experience… WK could learn a LOT from how bunpro has grown over the past couple of years…the biggest difference…bunpro (even with a small dev team)…really listened and tried to work hard to implement features users requested, everything is open beta (none of the 2 week bs)… no system will ever be perfect but listen to your users…and devs should also be users…not just devs…suspect that may also be part of the problem…

for me…kitsun FTW! can undo typos, hibernate/suspend cards (leeches)…can move cards to different decks…has a summary page, with quick study on the summary page for the recent misses, has an app (oh yeah must be a huge company to be able to do that since budget is a wk problem)…oh yeah and it has a dark mode that lots of people ask for but no that’s too hard for wk to implement because it’s out of wk control and budget…(but somehow they spent a year developing kana vocab???)

Unless WK mgmt/devs stop and take a serious look at the issue globally…don’t see WK being able to go on (as somoene else said)…lots of good companies get destroyed by short sided or new mgmt ides trying to improve something for new users and forget about their existing and end up ruining the product…WK is on that road now (or seems to be)…if they don’t start rethinking their intent of the platform what are they teaching, kanji, vocab, kana, all the vocab to be able to read (adding a whole dictionary to wk???) [thought it was learn all the kanji/vocab in a year - which isn’t possible for most people] wk is in some serious trouble…

Things like all the effort from the script writers and people that make the 3rd party apps is one of the reasons wk has survived for so long…IMO…

really think WK devs/mgmt should seriously stop take a step back and good hard look look at their existing user base and see what they can do to get people to level 60 (both the paid monthly users and the lifetime users)… most people quit and don’t continue…has WK really spent the time to figure out why…? if the system was so great people wouldn’t quit in droves… yeah some people give up but very few actually make it to level 60… why do people quit??? Yeah some get bored…but why? what’s the root cause…I only went for so long because I paid for a lifetime membership…would have probably left 2 years ago as the leeches really bogged everything down…suspend would have been nice, but that’s not within wk control or budget (but anki is free… ) I will get to level 60 but over on kitsun… I came to learn kanji, not die with leeches and not be able to correct typos…even the old ibm selectrics had correction tape in the 1970s…but in 2023 an undo button is not within wks control or budget…

WK should take a good hard look at what it would take to retain users and get them to level 60 (learning the kanji) not quitting… that would in turn help keep profits up not down…eventually you run out of new users (guinea pigs)…and word gets around that the service isn’t so great… this is the chance for WK to really step up rethink what they want to do…teach kanji, or something else …they can recover but … the forecast isn’t great

meanwhile the individual free labor force from the script writers keeps wk from completely sinking…

I’ve been around a bit. (2015ish) Reset a couple times.

I could respond to everything you said, but after thinking about it, I fear this would dissolve into a back and forth that would not be the most positive.

I’ll just leave it at this. Many of us us think we have a great product for a good price. Others learn differently and that’s just how it is. (For example: I love using WK, but it’s terrible for my wife.) I’m glad you found something that works for you. Many people don’t want to go to the trouble to set up everything themselves. Honestly even 90% of the settings in Flaming Durtles I don’t touch.

Anki is a wonderful product. They do charge $25 for their IOS app though. I’m glad I’m android. And everything still has to be set up yourself. I use Anki all the time. I recommend it at least monthly.

what!!! …going to be adult about this… ??? How dare you!!!

[hearing anime speak in my head…貴様、死ね! 死ね! 死ね! 死ね!]

Seriously … no worries… those were my opinions …
never meant they had to be yours or anyone else’s

I’ve never reset, did reviews every day…even w/o internet once this awesome app came out when I’d be camping and what not… just bogged down by leechy death… (android here also - this app was what kept me going)

(not counting 1 week vacation w/o internet 4wheeling/camping/overlanding pre flaming durtles - no internet / phone / power for a week…so quiet … and wonderful…and vacation to Japan last year - immersion counts! was there for a month and set it into vacation mode after a weekish…thus 3 weeks or so of vacation mode - tried to do reviews but ugh with the time difference, tired, leeches and all of that just said vacation mode and be done with it…)

and so far my migration to kitsun…it’s only been a short period…I can’t say it will work 100%…but it’s definitely a huge improvement (for me)… the biggest improvement so far how I’m handing the leeches - separate decks removed, more spacing etc…not sure if it will fix the leeches but so far about 10% of them are moving forward instead of being leechy… (fingers crossed it works)!

If you’ve been around and reset…(and if you haven’t yet made it to level 60)… 早く!!!

or if you are like someone who is level 3 but has been through WK 2x or was it 3x…don’t remember now… how many level 60 circles leebo has…you’re smarter than I’m that’s for sure!

Hello Everybody, how are you doing ?

Is Flamingdurtles has Double Check option when we are near the answer but WK does not accept it ? If so, how Can we enable it ?

Thank you !

it does but flaming durtles will die soon…no thanks to the wk devs…however…someone was kind enough to develop smouldering durtles and it’s based on the original … check out the other thread…

tried to suggest this threat get updated in the main thread and close it but hasn’t happened yet… scroll back a bit and find the smouldering durtles

Thank you !!!

You won’t believe but I was listening to songs while reading this thread and オレンジ started playing just as I started reading yours. T-T
I’m sad now T-T

I’m having trouble with inputting the API token into my app. I have the most recent update, and I have newly generated API tokens, but when I type/paste them into the app, it doesn’t save for some reason.

Flaming durtles is no longer maintained. You might want to check out the following thread and download the fork of that project. Smoldering Durtles works great.

Hi - the app worked well after a first reset a few years ago. After a second reset this year …it stopped updating properly review and lesson, with background tasks sometimes getting stuck, or reviews count not decreasing and review asking the same over and over again.
I tried clearing cache, uninstalling (android version) and reinstalling, and creating a new aoi key as well.

Is it a known issue after resets ? Do I need to catch up to my previous levels (22) before it start working properly ?
I’m going back to wanikani webpage at the moment…

The app isn’t supported anymore, it’s been forked and is now called smouldering durtles

anyone know whether there is a guide on how to use this app? like where to find specific features like reorder and which options to choose if you want radicles and kanji first ?

Ask Smoldering Durtles maintainer to open Wiki (and maybe Discussion) tabs in GitHub?

Otherwise, searching this thread and Smoldering Durtles thread should work just fine.
