Hello, I don’t know if this is a bug, but during reviews I have some vocabulary that is displayed as if they were radicals instead.
This is the case for ホテル and おはよう for example.

Correct. That’s because this app has been developed before there were any kana vocabulary on Wanikani and is not maintained, so that won’t be fixed.
Flaming Durtles has been forked, meaning the original code is now reused to make a new app, where this and other things have been fixed, check out Smouldering Durtles if you want it (I am personally still using Flaming Durtles because I’ve had it in forever and the small bugs don’t bother me)

Ah, I see.
Well then, sorry to bother you about that
And thanks for the heads up !

sorry for the late response, but thanks soo much!

I know I am replying super later, but iwanted to thank you for the time and effort you took in explaining everything! it helped a ton! Thanks =)

Hi, thanks for making this app. Been on a long break from learning Japanese and it feels good to be back.
Since I had been for so long, I forgot a lot of the things I had learned and felt it was necessary to reset my level to a previous one so that it’s not too overwhelming. When I did, it reset the number of lessons to whatever lessons I had for that level on the official website, but not on Flaming Durtles. When I reset, I had 15 lessons on WK and 263 on FD. I did those lessons and it’s still 263. The number of reviews is accurate.
I tried syncing many times and resetting the database, but no dice. Any idea what’s happening and how to fix it?

There has been an update to the lesson module recently on Wanikani. The new module selects a number of lessons for studying, the default is 15. This is the number of lessons that gets displayed on the lesson button. To see the true number of lessons must must clicked advanced and count the lessons that are displayed there. If you don’t want to do these lessons click on the WaniKani at the top left corner of the screen.

Flaming Durtle got no such update. This is why the number of lessons is not the same as the one displayed.

On an separate topic Flaming Durtle is no longer maintained. Try Smouldering Durtle for a mainatained fork of it.

Ah, thank you for the explanation. Yeah, I read some of the recent posts and installed Smouldering Durtles yesterday. Hopefully it’ll get updated, custom lessons sounds pretty sweet.

Does anyone have a good list of fonts that can plug into FD for extra practice, particularly that give a very different style or calligraphy for extra difficulty? I love the otsutome and gochikakutto that come included, maybe there’s a 草書体 font or bitmap-style like you’d see in an old NES game - any other ideas, any sites that compile the kinds of files that DT needs?

Hey @ejplugge , im currently having an issue with kanji and vocab items being cut from the top a bit, which is a problem.

This only happens on the search results screen, either if I go there by manually searching, or via the search presets (clicking for example on the apprentice level items, or on my level progress bar on dashboard). I added some screenshots so u can see what i mean. By the way, I checked the font settings with hope to fix my problem there, but there is no cathegory for the search results font, so never mind.

I hope it won’t have to come to resetting all of my options or reinstalling the app because i changed a lot of settings. Talking about that, you could actually add an option to export and import settings as a file to another device (if its not a problem of course)

I wish you the best, dev, and i hope for a quick reply.

Lots of love,
Happy user of your app.

PS. Dont say that your UI looks ugly, its rly well designed in my opinion, and all the options are easy to find. I hate all those over-simplified UI’s nowadays.

Never mind, i just fixed it by switching the custom font off and on in the system settings

This app is unmaintained since ejplugge hasn’t been around for years. There is a maintained fork called Smouldering Durtles.

I just finished radicals and downloaded the app to contribute with kanji but it covers my English input into Japanese?

When it says “Kanji Reading” on the top it means the Japanese reading so it will convert your input to Japanese. If it says “Kanji Meaning” then it expects the English text. For the kanji on your screenshot the answer expected was “hachi” which would have been shown as はち. Does that make sense?

Ah, do I do need to know hiragana first?

Yes you do. And also katakana.

Thanks, apologies for that then. Thought I could start here, will have a look for where I can learn katakana and hiragana

I’m loving the Flaming Durtles - hasn’t broken yet despite the neglect, I’m glad a fork has been made.

One thing I really like in FD is the self study quiz options. I have a collection of saved searches - primarily ‘leeches’ but there are others - that I have come to really rely on for keeping my momentum up. Does anyone know any browser based tools that have a similar function?

The funny thing is that I only realised this would probably be the case (default behaviour of FD is to treat any unknown subject type as a radical, iirc, which works in this case) after I’d dug into the code enough while making updates to support the newer Android APIs post-fork - I could probably have not bothered, but I’m glad I did - you never know when another WaniKani API change will come, hehe

As a note, I’ve added that this is no longer maintained to the tile, since I think it’s not always clear to people that there’s no support from the developer available - I think this is probably fair to do, but am just checking with the mods to see if they agree

I’ve been wondering about this and haven’t been able to find an answer: Why are there more “Apprentice” steps (7) in the legend than there are Apprentice steps (4) in the SRS system?

(Edit: guess I should have asked in the smouldering durtles thread, really. (Although I’m still using flaming durtles because I don’t want to recreate my settings :face_with_peeking_eye:) Oh well. I will if this doesn’t have an answer in a week)
(Edit 2: I’ve now asked this in the Smouldering Durtles thread here)
