New login timeout

Apologies. I am one of those people who have over a dozen tabs open at all times. I had no idea it affected the database performance. I’ll still keep my tabs open, though, as a constant reminder of what I need to do.

It’s you. You’re Tabs Georg. You’ve been bringing down the database.

(That said, having multiple review tabs open at once can make WaniKani misbehave, so it’s best to not do that.)

Meanwhile I usually have at most 4 or 5 at any time. Currently sitting on 1 tab.

I currently have five chrome windows and nine Firefox windows open so that I can organise their tabs by what they are for. Unfortunately I lost most of them when I moved house and since I couldn’t remember what was there I couldn’t recreate them all.

If it helps, I closed the Texfugu tabs (yes, plural) after my post here. And I closed the second WK tab now. Thank you! I had no idea. I always had one tab for lessons and one for reviews. If I have only the lessons tab up, then I forget to check the reviews. Maybe I just need more B12 instead of more tabs.

Edit: Just remembered that when I botch an item on KameSame, I have a habit of opening on separate WaniKani tabs that vocab, its individual kanji and radicals to review them after I’m done on KameSame. And when I can’t get around to it on that same day, I leave them open for the next day.

If this is for security and performance reasons, then these two weeks are just the beginning. Guess I’m definitely excited for the upcoming speed-running feature:

I feel your pain! That’s why I started creating bookmarks tabs for my open-at-all-times tabs. I have one named “Japanese tabs.” And that’s why I could so easily close my TextFugu tabs.

Just in case you’re being serious, the number of tabs you have open does not have any influence on WaniKani’s performance, if you want to have a hundred tabs open then go wild.

Please work on identifying and fixing the underlying issues responsible for subpar database performance rather than issuing band-aid fixes which only make the site less convenient for the average user. It can be tough enough maintaining the motivation to study as is without updates like this which introduce further hinderances to the learning process.

Insofar as you have the RAM

You just download more if you run out.

How could I forget this pro-tip?! Thanks for the reminder

I don’t often feel the need to complain or even comment about updates, but this one…seems particularly ill-advised to me… The SRS for the first review after lessons is 4 hours, and then it gets longer after that. If the default timeout is also 4 hours, then you’re basically guaranteeing users will have to re-login every time they want to do reviews… Unless you’re expecting people to be refreshing when they don’t have reviews available? I’m not a new user, but if I were, that would definitely put me off using the system…

I will be checking the ‘every two weeks’ box, so at least I personally will only have to deal with that frustration once every two weeks. But wouldn’t it make more sense to at least set the default to either 5 or 9 hours, so that the initial 4 hour and/or 8 hour Apprentice reviews after lessons don’t require you to re-login?

Also, if it’s security of a public computer that’s the concern, what about an option for a user to mark whether it’s a public or private machine - if it’s public, log off immediately when the browser closes; if it’s private, stick with the previous way of functioning (no timeout, or so I assume).

This is what the “Remember me” checkbox is for on all websites.

Please reconsider this decision for all the reasons the people above already mentioned.
I always keep one tab for WK open to just refresh the review counter due to spread timestamps for the items. I don’t want to spend totally unnecessary time to login again, no matter if I have to type my password manually or if it’s pre-filled by my browser.
It’s just an annoying hurdle, one can easily get fed up with and move away from WK.

Bold statement considering the topic of this thread lol. I think we need to stop assuming any common web design patterns apply to WaniKani and just assume their backend is 46 hamsters and a 1981 IBM machine. For all we know, having 3 tabs open “organizes” 3x as much data into the “priority” area of the database (?). Soon enough they’ll force you to download a browser extension that automatically manages your tabs for you to make sure you don’t open too many at once.

Your point about the API endpoints is a great one. API endpoints function whether you’re logged in or not. Is WK saying that their backend goes and reorganizes data every time a request is made to the API? Or does this magical “prioritization of data” not apply to the API endpoints? This just raises so many questions that we all know very well they will never answer or even acknowledge.

Maybe in a few weeks a new thread will open up where they blame it on us again like they did for the Reviews endpoint.

I have to say this update has already caused inconvenience, my review pile lately is often quite large and I don’t always finish it in one sitting. Staying focused on Wanikani has been a bit of an issue for me lately so I often get distracted away from my tab, or sometimes I just don’t have time to complete the reviews. This means sometimes I come back to my tab hours later, such as I did just now. But, due to the four hour sign out, it’s signed me out in the middle of my progress through my reviews, making the content unavailable, and I’ve now lost the progress on the reviews I had only had half done  This might also mess up the SRS system when I get round to doing them again, since now I’ve seen them more recently than I should have.

This may be “prioritising the performance for active learners.” but I don’t see why others have to more severely sacrifice their experience for this.

Make sure you’re using the “keep me signed in for 2 weeks” option as that will mostly (but not entirely) mitigate this issue. It’s still super inconvenient to have to sign in every 2 weeks (especially since WaniKani is something you have to use every single day for 3+ years), but at least it won’t be cutting up your reviews like that (as often).

First time forum poster here:

I’ve already tried to use the “keep me signed in for 2 weeks” option twice in the same browser today. From a technical perspective as an IAM expert, session timeout should have nothing to do with server load if properly engineered. Please change it back.

Well since you’re forcing my hand I’ll just make a script that logs me in. This update made it less secure now. Have it be at least a month but to the end of time would be preferable.
