Hello everyone!
I couldn’t imagine reaching level 60 when I started 872 days ago! As many others I had an unsuccessful run some years ago, because was learning new items too fast and burned out completely before I even reached level 20. This time around I set a humble goal to learn 10 items per day and mostly kept with it (a bit less so before item shuffling was added to the batches).
One other thing that helped me stick to the goal was keeping a study log which is available on my mastodon page. I typically posted whenever I reached a new level and supported my (lousy) writing by screenshots of both SRS stats (sadly only beginning with level 19) and level up emails. Here’s the animation that summarizes the numeric parts of the posts that I did:
Here’s my wkstats.com confirming slow, but steady pace
Some studying stats:
Somewhere around level 15, I began to read 鬼滅の刃, which was incredibly painful to go through since I have to lookup (and draw) lots of kanji that I didn’t yet study, but was also extremely rewarding. Ever since then I got more and more manga, and eventually transitioned to reading novels (e.g. 魔女の宅急便). My current reading is:「マン・カインド」 by 藤井太陽. Not going to lie, it is still pretty hard, but seeing my bookmark slowly move closer and closer to the end of the book is extremely motivating.
From here on my goals are to finish learning level 60 items, burn every remaining radical/kanji/vocabulary, and work work work on my grammar. I didn’t take JLPT formally, but I was able to barely pass mock N2 test a few months ago. Still I struggle to use whole arsenal of Japanese grammar in conversations, but fighting this with a couple of italki teachers.
To finish this post off, I’m extremely grateful for WaniKani as not only the kanji memorization tool, but also as the app that proved that I’m capable of putting years of continued practice into the complex language that Japanese is.
Thank you a lot everyone!
