I think that’s a bit excessive. It’s perfectly reasonable to be doing the previous level’s vocab while doing the current level’s radicals and kanji. And it’s entirely possible for this to happen with one of WaniKani’s built in ordering settings.
Oh, neat - thanks for clarifying
I think I’m having a hard time articulating what I mean, because technically the vocab that appears when you level up is the previous level’s vocab.
What I mean is that ideally your “Lessons” count should be at (or very near) 0 when you unlock a new level. Otherwise, you’re “skipping” and creating more work for yourself down the road.
I just did 40 vocab lessons an hour ago on a whim. I never usually do that many at once, but I just had the urge. So, in three hours, I’m gonna hate the me of an hour ago.
I know that feel
Not exactly—as long as you aren’t using the reorder script.
As WK is designed (without scripts), you will still do all the previous level’s vocabulary before you see the next level’s radicals—even if you have officially leveled up. In level 16 I spent a month at this, because I had gotten tired of WK and was reducing my number of apprentice items before doing any more lessons. Currently I’m officially at level 18 and have been for over a week, but I just did the radicals a few days ago.
If you know how many lessons to spread through the days, you can also use the reorder script and still manage not to be behind. You just have to be sure that you are finishing up the previous levels, not letting the vocabulary get further and further behind. The reorder script doesn’t seem to work properly for me, though, so I have disabled it. I’m not in a hurry anyway.
[Edit to add: I just re-read some of your earlier comments and realized that you probably know this already… I thought about deleting but decided to let it stand because there seems to be so much confusion about this sort of thing that it can stand restating.]
I’ve done all the ones available just after levelling up with the previous level’s vocab. So that must be 140 or so. It’s OK if you’ve got the time for it.
With that said, don’t skip vocabs AND don’t do them ONLY when you are in the mood. Else you miss the reason of using WaniKani. Sure, you may cheat sometimes with vocabs and go zero-tolerance for Kanji.
No offense but your impatience on moving too fast instead of your pace (= the amount of time and dedication to do your lessons and review and else) will lead you to despair and quitting. Hard to swallow but true. I did my mistakes and want to you save from the stress.
However, if you need your life lesson, I won’t hold you back from continuing.
If anyone feels interested in my routine:
I now know how much reviews I can handle. There are approx. 170 lessons per level. And I want a good pace of 11 day per level.
So 170 / 11 = approx. 15,4 = 15 lessons per day
Within the 4 days of GURUing your radicals, you should learn the Kanji first, then vocabs.
After your radicals are Guru, you learn the new available Kanji, then vocabs.
Result: Approx. 120 reviews each day, 20-30 minutes.
Apprentice: ~100 (± 20), Guru: ~400, Master: ~500-550, Enlightment: ~1450 (± 50)
Every day is a great day since my first time using the routine =)
A good plan leads to high motivation! (Just ignore the typo)
So, see how much you can handle, how long you want for one level, calculate, and observe the result, then decide to adjust or continue, repeat.
Have u any idea how i can do it in 7-8 days routine? it will be ok if i learn 25 items per day, but i still feel strange because it was really hard to handle all new lessons at once when I unlocked all vocab in same time.
There’s nothing to feel strange when you just do your 25 lessons per day and can handle the big amount of reviews. Well, it might be hard to lesson the Kanji together without a Reorder User Script so I use one (Use it with care, you may misuse it as the Ignore Script). Ignore the big number as long as your calculations are correct.
However, as you are still under LvL 4, you can just do it how you feel as the real WaniKani system begins with the subscription. And I don’t know how much reviews you need to do each day with 25 items per day. I never tried it as it is way too much for me.
I accidentally got stuck with to many reviews left to do, so now I am simply going to not do my new lessons for a little bit while I whittle away at reviews.
Lesson learned.
I made the same plan but now I feel that 15 a day is just not that much, maybe it’s because I’m at a lower level though.
But for now I’ll go faster
The review count is really manageable and I always have 90%+ right anyways.
I just do lessons when I feel like it, some days I can’t do any lessons, some days I can do 60. All this planning just makes me go crazy haha
I think the most was 100 throughout the course of the day, however now I keep the lessons within 15-25 lessons a day depending on what my other life commitments will be throughout the week.
Yeah, if you get 100% and overlook the times when you get over a hundred new lessons upon level up.
Well, you clear it out to 0 before the next level…and I dont recall getting over 100 lessons on level ups.
And no, you dont need 100%~
I would agree that it is counterproductive to do so many at once, but at the same token, if you’re not trying to get to lvl 60 by a specific amount of time then I say do as many as you want!
I think it’s really more of a personal preference because if I did that many I know I would get at least half of them incorrect on the first review (which renders the original lesson useless) - also I hate getting answers wrong. If you don’t mind spending extra time - then do it however you want!
Just make sure to have fun with it because as soon as you start thinking of it as a chore, I guarantee you will start treating it as a chore and lose interest.
That’s impressive, I don’t think I would be able to do it, congratulations. I am sure that with such a will power you will get to the end of Wanikani in no time!!
I used to spread out my vocab lessons throughout the level but around lvl 45 I lost my mind and began to do all vocab lessons (usually 80-100) in one go so I could enjoy that lovely 0/0 for a while. Then again, I also have to enjoy this lovely daily review count every now and then…
So glad I didn’t do it throughout the whole of WaniKani.
Probably about 180 in one go. In general I prefer to space my reviews out in groups of 50-60 ideally. I remember being about level 5 and shitting myself when I had 30 reviews. Now it takes over 200 to have that feeling.
For me WK is like a muscle that I slowly push to just before the limit. There’s a sweet spot between comfortably finishing your reviews and just burning out. It feels like being satisfied and slightly taxed at the same time, feeling like you’ve pushed yourself somewhat yet prevailed.
At the moment I like to keep my apprentice items at 120. In a month or so I’ll raise that to 130, 140 and so on.
I agree with idomargot. I was doing a level every 8 days until I hit level 17, When I started level 17, I was hit with the 70+ lessons and I was getting 300+ reviews a day (including my first burns coming in). It was impossible to actually do the lessons with all the reviews hitting at once. I realized I needed to slow down or I was going to burn out. So, I spent a month on level 17 to catch up and slow down my progress. I also started using the “WaniKani Lesson Balance” script which really spreads out the lessons more.
