@WeebPotato Thanks! NGE is Neon Genesis Evangelion, right? I only every saw the first couple of episodes of that in my teens.

@windupbird Awww, thank you. Also, I’m completely understanding with the fact that people would probably miss Kiro more than me.

@SketchingDays At the time I picked Torii, I wanted something like Wanikani with text input to answer questions. And that is built right into Torii. While I know it is possible for anki, I found anki clunky and hard to understand/configure. So if you want WK like reviews, I can highly recommend Torii, it also lets you skip WK vocabulary.

Beyond that, I can’t really speak for premade Anki decks, since I’ve never really used Anki.

There is no way to avoid the vocabulary on Wanikani. While you can use reorder omega script to avoid them for a while, I’ve heard that there is a max limit to the number of lessons, so it won’t work for all 60 levels. But honestly, if you’re not gonna do the vocabulary lessons, or find them worthless, I’d use something other than WK.

The strength of WK is that it uses the vocabulary to strengthen your grasp of the kanji (well breaking them into radicals also help, and the order of going simpler kanji first… but still), and WK also teaches more readings through it, which would be hard to memorize all at once. And personally, I found I don’t really learn the kanji until I learn the vocabulary. So for me, the kanji lessons are just to familiarize myself with the kanji and the vocabulary is what teaches them to me.

Also, now in the later levels, I find myself remembering kanji by which words they are in, not by themselves. So any kanji I learnt without vocabulary to back it up, would go poof in my memory in no time.

@RoseWagsBlue And I didn’t even share one pic of my little boy here. xD Thank you. <3

@fallynleaf I’ve enjoyed our exchanges in each other’s study logs too. Honestly, your words this November that prompted me to shift lessons on non-kanji days made November a much more enjoyable month for me. Thank you so much for that.

So glad someone agrees about よつばと. I found it so funny and if I hadn’t been so busy with book clubs because I started joining them, I would surely have read more of it already.

I love that you can share that love of the series with your dad. My dad read a lot when I was young and probably before I was born, but he kinda fell out of the habit and hasn’t come back to it even in retirement as far as I understand. If he ever does, I’d love to find some series we’d both love.

@Beyond_Sleepy Whelp, I guess I know what my next book club will be. I think Orange will finish in March or so, so early May would indeed be possible. Why do I always do this to myself? :joy:

If it still seem like a good idea later, I’ll do my best to remember to ping you and fallynleaf. ^^

@mbence02 Thanks! And yes, Science Fiction Bokhandeln is a great store. It was the bookstore supplying me with all the fantasy and urban fantasy novels in English to take me to fluency. Also where I bought the manga and anime I owned as a teen.

I didn’t know they had a big nordic mythology collection, next time I’m in Stockholm, I’ll have to look into that. I want to find info on the lesser known Swedish mythological creatures to use them in my fiction. We have such wealth of them, but I don’t have any good place to get info on them.

I’ve also bought a lot of board games there. They have quite a good collection of that too. (Or they had, I haven’t been in for a few years.)

If you like tea, you should visit Chaikhana in Gamlastan, it is only a stone’s throw from the bookstore (to be fair everything in Gamlastan is close together). And if you haven’t done a historical tour of Gamlastan, I’d recommend that too. I think it was during such a tour with school that I learnt about how death sentenced people became the next executioner (I’m pretty sure there is a wikipedia page about it too). Also, Stockholm bloodbath happened in the area too. Skattkammaren is a fun museum there too.

Do visit the east asia museum in Stockholm too. I’ve always enjoyed my visits there, to see asian historical objects. Their tours are worth the time too.

Those are probably my favorite places in Stockholm. Also Djurgården during better weather is such a nice place for long walks.

I guess I do know of a few good places in the city I grew up. xD

@DIO-Berry Thanks! :smiley:

Correct. It’s known for pushing it a bit with slapping katakana atop of long kanji chains to explain what the fancy pseudo-scientific English terms mean.

There it is! :zap: Congratulations!! :tada:

Unfortunately, but it’s a great step towards it  . That’s where the challenges and book clubs shine!

Looking forward to seeing you around as always, and suffer enjoy together the journey towards very few lookups! and healthily whine in the process.

Thank you! Yes, more reading! :tea:

I’m cheering you on! 頑張って!

Oh absolutely! Don’t get me wrong, the vocabulary in wani kani is what gets me most excited about it actually ^^’
Ok, the fact that torii allows skipping wani kani vocab definitely makes it very interesting! As they can work hand in hand! And man yeh Anki’s interface is not the most exciting ^^’
Thank you for all the info!

Congratulations on level 60! :tada: :confetti_ball: It’s been super inspiring to see you climb up those levels and I’ve really enjoyed reading about your journey with your studies so far. Wishing you luck with your future study endeavors!

Is that super long samurai otome, Hakuoki by chance? :eyes: In the future when you play it if you’re maybe looking for any reading buddies I’d totally be down!

Thank you!

And yes, Hakuoki was indeed the one I meant. :joy: I was wondering around the otome threads here on WK and kept seeing it mentioned as really good (and really long), so when I made my order for the VN club to get 9-nine- I decided to pick it up.

I’d love a reading buddy, but I can honestly say I have no idea when I’ll get around to that one. I’d also have to decide if I wanna try and tackle learning the historical terms with that one, or if I’d do it with a shorter work. Well, maybe Nightshade will win the vote for the VN club (or the potential off-shoot otome VN club) and decides that for me. :joy:

Based on the poll I wouldn’t be surprised if it did someday. Nightshade definitely seems like a better historical start than Hakuoki, I think Hakuoki has like 13 routes :flushed: Although I imagine by the end of all that the samurai vocab would be down pat :joy:

That is what I was thinking too. Struggle for a route, maybe two and then somewhere in route 3-4 it has been learnt and a lot of historical stuff opens up. It would just be such a huge time commitment right now, at my reading speed/look up need.

It’s definitely still something far off for me as well, especially since it’s hard to do fast lookups on console. Something to look forward to in the future though!

Congratulations!!! You did it! :tada: I’m still working on getting around to my lvl 60 post :eyes:… Best of luck on your journey henceforth!

Thank you! I think I set aside two afternoons to write it all and paste all those pictures into the post in the right order. For me, that was kinda the cherry on top. The finishing touch to close out WK as a study method. (I’m still doing reviews, and will for a few more months, but they will start decreasing a lot soon, so not a hardship.)

Somehow I missed your rollover to Level 60.

As a fellow follower of the slow (very slow in my case) and meandering path, congratulations on finally getting there!

I will, too. Someday!

Also, please don’t abandon us completely! The forums will not be the same without you.
