Memorizing vocabulary

Hi everyone,

I have found so far WaniKani extremely efficient to memorize the kanjis and their associated vocabulary words. What I find difficult is to memorize the vocabulary without seeing the kanjis (basically to translate from english to japanese a word I learned to read). Most of the time I have to mentally visualize the kanji in order to get the reading.

Is this difficulty fading away with time and experience?

Any suggestion would help!

This is a common difficulty. To learn from English to Japanese you need a tool such as Kaniwani or Kamesame.

Thanks for the information! I checked in the app store and couldnā€™t find KaniWani, do you know if they have an IOS version ?

If you want something similar to WaniKani (SRS platform) for production (producing Japanese based on English prompt), then try out either KaniWani or KameSame. Both can sync with your WaniKani account so in those systems you will see the same content, you will just be quizzed in reverse.

Both are decent. I have used both. I do prefer KameSame due to better handling of the potentially confusing cases where WaniKani has the same English word for multiple vocab. For example, in WaniKani there are 3 different vocab items for which the English answer is ā€œMotherā€ so when using KaniWani you will see a prompt of ā€œMotherā€ but have no idea which one is behind it and if you are wrong, you are wrong. KameSame detects these and will not mark you wrong but rather tell you ā€œYeah, that is one of the correct answers but was really looking for this other oneā€. You can get around this in KaniWani by manually adding synonyms. E.g. adding things like ā€œSomeone elseā€™s motherā€ and ā€œYour own motherā€ to the appropriate items to make them more specific to the actual Japanese vocab in question.

Thanks for the valuable information. I tried both platforms and it seems I am more confortable on KaniWani (a bit overwhelmed by all the different options in KameSame).
