# "Maths in Japanese" (Math and CS book club)

Now I’m able to reproduce the error… although it still puzzles me…

So, when I go into edit mode it renders the latex code correctly but in final mode it doesn’t

Okay, I managed to read through the 定義 section as well. And I was glad to see some of the terms from the triangle section and circle section in the Math 2.1 video popping up. As well as the basic terms for 1D and 2D spaces as discussed in Math 2.2. Interestingly, 辺 is used for “edge” in a mathematical / geometrical context. So, I really hope you could reinforce at least some of last weeks vocab marathon

I watched this week’s videos and as usual I enjoyed them and found them really well done. I did have to use the japanese subtitles again though.
However, I haven’t even touched last week’s wikipedia article. I have to say, they’re really a chore for me I might read it eventually, but only out of book club solidarity.

I think, @Wildjinjer senpai mentioned as well that the WP articles are quite challenging and less engaging than the YouTube videos. If it is okay with you, we can try to find out what it is that makes them less enjoyable or how we can help each other to make them more enjoyable.

I stretched this weeks reading from one to two weeks but in return cancelled the “bonus” article. So we have a little bit more time to discuss the current article or maybe do some vocab collecting / grammar discussion first.

Before jumping into the next article maybe go through the following questions ~ either for yourself or share your thoughts in here.

• (i) What is the most blocking element to make the WP articles enjoyable / pleasant to read?
• (ii) What is it you’d like to get out of a WP article (section) after reading it?

You can approach the questions from different perspectives ~ Japanese vocab / grammar, math content is exiting / unfamiliar / boring / too abstract / … , interest in reading intensive / extensive, interest in having discussions ~ basically anything. It is our book club so we can shape it the way we want to

Interest basically. I had no issue reading Wikipedia articles recently for topics I was familiar with and interested in (various arithmetic and geometry articles). Specifically for the second and third articles, I don’t like trigonometry or statistics, so I just skipped them. I’m not familiar with the next topic, but it looks complicated, so I might just skip that one as well.

My goal is to get used to university-level mathematics in Japanese, so I’m mainly using the Wikipedia articles to collect vocabulary and expressions for my Anki deck. Language aside, the articles are more enjoyable to me the more I’m interested in the topic. For example with the article on natural numbers, I skipped the historical section but spent more time on the technical part with the axiomatic definitions since that was pretty interesting, even though it also felt more difficult language-wise. With the trig functions article, I’m a bit intimidated by how long it is (even though there isn’t that much text) so I haven’t started it yet

Thanks for sharing. And I can totally understand skipping is the way to go for content that is boring or not useful for your learning objectives

The last topic will be basic algebra. The WP article then is about “vector spaces”.

I see. Yes only reading parts of the article makes sense. What I do in here is to set smaller goals, e. g. at the beginning of a week I set to goal to read the introduction or to read (section name here) section. When I hit the goal and there is more time left, I set the next one. For me personally it takes out the pressure to not aim for the full article from the very beginning. If I end up reading the whole article though that super cool. Otherwise, if I end up reading the part(s) I wanted to read from the beginning it still feels rewarding

To also share a little bit… for me the most blocking part these days is RL related. Otherwise I’m good with the strategy not to aim for the full article at once. They definitely do look intimating

Apart from that, for me personally the important part about the articles is that I’m familiar with the content. So I don’t want to learn new content about the topics themselves as a main goal ~ although I don’t mind if it happens of course. I mainly want to experience how it is expressed in Japanese and see (some) of the vocab from the videos in action. I like the videos but they are also quite dense, I think.

In case anyone went for the article on normal distributions feel free to share your thoughts or questions. I haven’t prepared any quizzes yet and will most likely have to postpone it probably to the weekend

During the final two weeks we will learn about basic algebra terms and topics. It’s only one video but it’s little bit longer this time, I think. The article will be about vector spaces and quite long again. I’ll have a look into it at the weekend and will try to give some more info’s / recommendations about each section. …and in case I don’t do it feel free to remind me

As the final WP article is incredible long as well my suggestion would be to have look into the “definitions” section (定義). We will meet a few terms from our first WP article about natural numbers here.

If you want you can also have a look into the “examples” section (例). During our last book club we also came across the following video. It is a more practical introduction and uses the euclidean space as an example:

I should’ve participated in this since I’m a math professor and I’ve worked with Japanese students before. Sadly, I’ve been going through teacher burnout. But I’d certainly be interested in participating if this gets revived!

It’s easy to feel guilty when you miss out on something that would be for you, but please don’t give too much thought to it. I’ve experienced it a bit myself as a student and it really overwhelms you. Wishing you the best on your recovery.

As a math major I’m interested what type of field you’ve been teaching/researching.

I’m a community college prof, so I tend to focus more on teaching than research (lately, stuff like Universal Design for Learning and the neuroscience behind learning). In fact, for my Master’s project, I chose nonstandard analysis because I thought it would make beginning calculus easier to teach. Then I realized I’d have to explain to these students what ultrafilters and hyperreal numbers are and I was like, “OK, maybe I should just stick to what Newton said!”

Please feel free to hit me up if I can ever be of any help, by the way. Due to some personal stuff that arose along the way, getting that degree was quite a challenge for me. It’d be my pleasure to make any student’s path easier than mine was!

I actually went back and finished my bachelor degree this year. Thinking of doing a masters after gaining some work experience.

I’ve done some non-standard analysis in a logic course. It’s cool, but it does have quite a bit of work to build towards it. After all that work you do get a super powerful apparatus, but yeah it’s called non-standard for a reason .
