コンピュータの秘密 (Math and CS book club)

This is a weekly reading session of the math and CS book club approaching basic topics in computer science. In the upcoming sessions we will read Conpyûta no himitsu from Gakkens Manga de wakaru series.

About the book

“One day, classmate Takumi moves in into the same apartment house Masaki lives in. Among his belongings he has a PC and a couple of other computer devises. Although he is good in arithmetic he isn’t very close with his friends and it seems he likes to spend more time with his computer. When he turns some of Masakis illustrations into some CG models, suddenly a robotic dog from inside the computer comes to life.”

trying to make me learn while I learn Japanese how dare you!
Manga seems nice but I hate the drawing for some reason. It is free though…

Done with this week’s reading! This manga seems really cute, and it’s at a really pleasant level language-wise. And I already learned something new - I never really thought about how コンピュータ and パソコン are used differently.

Thanks for checking in. Beginning with chapter one there will be a couple of short articles summarizing a computer related topic. I’m quite confident they can be read independently from the manga. (Yes, I’m not letting you out of it that easily  )

I agree.

And if it is ok with everyone I will not add an extensive vocab list for the manga parts. (Sorry @ any future readers… ) There is a few grammar points or WK items written in Hiragana only I might add. At least a link, as it might be helpful to people getting started. (And to state this clearly… I looked up a bunch of items even if it was to double check only… so definitely feel free to ask  )

I remember a lecture by Bob Martin when he was asking the questions “How many computers are in this room?” or “How many computers do you have on your body?” ( Clean Code - Uncle Bob / Lesson 1, ~00:12’)

Despite that, I just realized that I named this thread パソコンの秘密 :see_no_evil:

Regarding the prologue chapter I have the following questions:

  • Page 9, panel 1: I understood the situation in general. The mother is asking how her son is doing in school as he is not talking about it at home. Misaki-chan seems to be the complete opposite type of person, telling her mother about everything. I did not understood though, what she is thinking about her classmate by thinking: 「たくみ コラッ!」(Did I read it correctly?)
  • Page 12, panel 1: How did you translate「 空間上に 」? I understood the rest of the part as Takumi-kun is pointing out that Holograms are technically possible but not with the given hardware.

Can’t really answer this one but I also read it as コラッ. I interpreted it as Misaki going "“wow, he’s like that?!” but I could be wrong.

When I google the phrase the first thing that comes up is stuff about drawing points in a coordinate space. I’m not sure how to phrase it properly in English but I think he was referring to 3D space outside of the screen. So maybe “in space” would be an acceptable translation?

The way it looks to me, with where the bubbles are trailing and the context, I think these are Takumi’s mother’s thoughts. She’s scolding her son, like ‘hey see, she tells her mother things, you should too’.

コラ is often used as a rebuke, so whichever of them is thinking of, they’re silently scolding him/ exasperated by his ways.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, being the mother’s thoughts makes sense to me. And then we get to know what kind of person Misaki-chan is.

Thanks for sharing. It was the pointer I needed. Basically, 空間 can be used as any kind of “space”, including the mathematical term. In combination with what he says next about virtual images entering our world as holograms it makes sense to me now.
So her reaction 「意味不明」basically is commenting that the whole explanation about holograms is a little bit cryptic to her, no?

I added some vocab items for the first chapter one article - conpyûta no rekishi. I’ll go through the other two articles at the weekend. Sometimes I added a WP link instead of a WK/jisho link.

Another favor to ask: in case you come along some vocab items we should enter into the math & CS wiki please mention them here or simply directly add them to the wiki. And in case you feel some of the items I suggest in the vocab section in this threads’ intro post should not go into the wiki please address it as well

Hope everyone enjoyed reading chapter one and learning about the “five abilities of a computer”, the different types of computers and their use cases

One of the panels I struggled with (but could resolve it eventually) was on p. 18 / panel 4: 「ぱっと思いうかぶのは …」since at first I broke down this part wrongly. Sometimes kanji really do the trick and writing it like the following got me back on track. 「ぱっと思い浮かぶのは …」

Another one I do not completely understand why it is expressed the way it is expressed is on p. 32 / panel 4: 「知れば知るほど …」I looked it up in the Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar (grammar point: ~ば~ほど) and it seems to be part of the pattern that the same verb / same adjective is used twice, first in conditional form and then again in its informal form.

Apart from that I found some nice opportunities to make J->J only anki cards. How about others? Anything you’d like to share?

Oh, and for the upcoming chapter I’d be interested in how you guys will translate 「装着がおさめられている」(It is in the first inter chapter article.)

I’m about halfway through the chapter, hopefully I’ll catch up soon :grimacing:

What I’m enjoying so far is that there are some compound words that look like a scary string of kanji at first glance but then I realise that I actually understand all the parts! Like for example 自動計算機 - five kanji with no kana in between still scare me a bit, but 自動 + 計算 + 機 isn’t actually all that bad. I’m glad I get to build up some confidence for reading compound words now, that’ll make more technical CS readings much more approachable in the future.

I wish there was a better solution (I really want to zoom in a bit ) but I guess we’re stuck with the web readers

Awesome. Welcome to the book club

Nice. Thanks for sharing. That’s what I decided to settle with yesterday.

Cool. And I can totally relate to that. It feels really good to actually recognize individual kanji or components of a compound term.

As for the web-reader… guess we have to make our peace with it. Zooming in works for me but I’m still crossing fingers to find a button that leads me directly to a given page p

Oh wow, thank you!

Just caught up and started second chapter and there is a new grammar point that is new to me but i can’t seem to understand what exactly does that sentence mean.

そんなことまでしていたの?
it seems the noun + までして is ‘even, will go far so as to~’ , does that mean that 'Takumi, you even did that sort of thing? Can’t figure out how to fit ‘will go far so as to~’

Welcome as well

The way I’d break it down:
そんな+こと → this kind of thing
まで → even, up to, as far as, … (DBJG, p. 225)
する+ている+past tense → here I’d say ~ている refers to a state Takumi was in (Cure Dolly has a short video on ている / てある / ておく)
の → it is that ~ (explanatory / emphasis) (DBJG, p.323)

Therefore, I think your translation fits. She is surprised that he was in a state when he disassembled a computer.

How do you think?

Cool, thanks for a detailed breakdown.

While reading saw `行って(おこなって)` and started thinking what would happen with 行って(いって) when text has no furigana, how do you know which one it is? Maybe someone seen this in a text without furigana?

You just have to guess using context. Usually though, I think the clue is that you’ll see 行う and へ・に行く. That’s how you tell them apart. I don’t think there’s a case in which you can say 行く, and even if there is, the kind of noun that appears before を行う is typically something that can be carried out or organised, which is rarely the case for a noun that comes before 行く.

Well, of course there is a case
(wouldn’t have guessed this myself either)

but all the examples seem to mention 道を行く (unless I overlooked something) so this seems to be a special case (and yes, like you said, the noun gives away that it can’t really be “to carry out a road” )

Sigh… I had a feeling it would be something like 空を飛ぶ, where what comes before を would be where the movement happens, but I just so rarely see it and didn’t feel like checking or thinking it through… :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: But yeah, it’s sufficiently different that you can tell them apart. Thanks for doing the research, by the way!

Hope you enjoyed reading chapter 2 and learning about the very basics about (classical) computers. I have to admit, I haven’t managed to go through the manga part of this chapter… and looking at my current workload it feels impossible that this will happen today. So I’ll schedule it for tomorrow.

Also, thanks for starting the discussion on を行う and を行く. It made me more sensitive for the differences in vocab and grammar. I really appreciate the feedback.

Any thoughts on my question from last week? :upside_down_face:

Update: I did it and went through the manga parts today.

I feel a little bit chilled how “nicely” they described working in a factory. On the other hand, as I have no experience in how working at a factory is, I should not judge.

I’m not quite finished with this chapter yet (factory part coming up) but I have a question

Page 48: このほか、データを小さくする圧縮や、コンピュータの動きにまちがいないかを調べるパリティというはたらきもあるよ。

Can someone please help me translate this? I’m struggling with the part starting at コンピュータ.

My attempt

Moreover, to compress data to make it smaller, and to check if the computer’s work is accurate (I have no idea how まちがいない fits in here), there is a はたらき (process? operation?) called parity.

Also, my favourite new vocabulary from this chapter so far is のん気, I really like the way it sounds :grinning:

Fingers crossed I can finish this chapter today.

Update: I did it :tada:

I’m lost on what おさめる means in this context

Same here. I also have no idea what working conditions in a Fujitsu factory in Japan are like but it felt a bit strange to me.
