Master List of Book Clubs

Good job! And I think offshoot is fine <3

“Offshoot” absolutely works, but were you thinking of “spin-off” maybe?

At least a few times people have just created a discussion topic about the book they wanted to read and put up a poll to see if others were interested. Usually that means the person proposing the book runs the book club, organizing what chapter/section to read when and stimulating discussion.

As an aside, do you have any interest in reading the upcoming Intermediate Book Club book キノの旅? It might be too easy for you if you’re looking for N2/N1 material though, and it may not be to your interest if you want something more literary. But I thought I’d mention it just in case.

I feel like I missed a miscellaneous book club that someone set up last year. I think it was supposed to be a harder book. Does anyone remember?

No, but I’ve had that niggling thought ever since you created this thread too :stuck_out_tongue:

I seem to remember even Kristen got involved?

Edit: this?

Thank you, that was it! Though it looks like that group died out quickly.

Yeah :pensive: but it has vocab lists and things, and it looks as if people enjoyed the stories they did read.

You are a saint <3

Thanks for the tips! I have in fact started reading a little of Kino’s Journey in preparation for the intermediate book club, and will probably continue on with it - there are plenty of gaps in my Japanese that would benefit from close reading of an easier text. But I’m really eager to crack on with some of the books that I envisaged reading from all the way back when I first started learning this hell language.

So I’d be v up for resurrecting the Kawabata club Radish8 exhumed, although maybe with a broader scope for authors in the long run. Could start a poll or something (does this website have poll functionality even?) to see if anyone apart from me is interested. I read a few chapters into Meijin last night and it wasn’t as excruciatingly difficult as I was expecting, apart from some of the specialist Go terms, so I think it might be worth the time of anyone who’s pushing N2 or higher.

Click the gear icon while making a post and there will be a “build poll” option.

You have no reason to know this, but that is a hilarious question to ask on this particular forum.

I remember that book. I’ve never given up without even trying before
I ordered the book, opened it, looked at a few pages and just NOPE!!! D=
It was WAY over my level =P (not that I gave it a chance. It just… didn’t catch my interest AND looked hard  )
Maybe one day… but not yet =P

@Abstormal I added the graded readers thread to the miscellaneous section. Hopefully you actually discuss a specific graded reader eventually. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you! I appreciate it =^_^=

I’ll make sure to sporadically try to spur conversations about specific books! =D

@CyrusS Are you okay with pinning this thread in the #japanese-language:reading section?

I absolutely want to read more literary texts. But unfortunately it’s most probably way beyond my abilities right now… Let’s chat again in a year or so, ok?

Oh. That certainly is a title.

I’ve updated the first post with the current books being read by all the book clubs.

I’ve also made it into a wiki so anyone running a book club can update it now.
