So happy to see new content being added in the past few weeks or months! As a Level 60 veteran, it’s nice to have a reason to come back. Honestly, though? I’d be down for another 20 or 30 levels.
Imagine a ‘Master’ tier for kotowaza, yojijukugo, and those super-specific literary terms. People always say ‘just go read,’ which is fair enough, but I honestly just love the WaniKani interface and SRS flow. I’m probably just a WK addict, but I’d love to see the climb continue. Anyone else feel the same, or am I just screaming into the void?
Something that I think would be cool would be if they did like DLC-esque packs of content that you could optionally add to the program with a more specifically tailored theme.
Bunpro has a system like this on their site where you can add in content decks from things like specific textbooks, Kansai dialect terms, or a wealth of fanmade decks covering specific games/movies/songs/novels/etc. and I always thought it was neat- though like you I definitely prefer the WK interface and flow way more.
Some ideas for content packs I’d be interested in would be like;
common Japanese names / surnames
famous pop culture titles (ex. 美少女戦士 セーラームーン , 悪魔城ドラキュラ)
something like “RPG terminology” or other broad video game topics
kanji-focused word puns
And while the main WK content already has a fair handful of them (for better or worse), it would be cool if they retroactively seperated and better fleshed out some of the things like Japanese cities / prefectures / etc. and made a way to not be forced into some of the more niche topics like
sports terms
military terms
legal terms
I’m not sure how all of this would work in the already established structure here, but I think there’s potential for it if implemented correctly.
I would say if they were going to go for full coverage on anything, it would make sense to do the jōyō kanji since that’s an actual official published list, whereas the N1 lists are just estimates.
I’d love them to add more vocab, as frankly the vocab it does teach barely scratches the surface. Despite that, there’s a lot of random, basically pointless vocab it does teach. So many military ranks, baseball terms, and completly random nonsense like “repose of souls” (whatever that is).
Meanwhile super common words like 博士 it doesn’t mention.
Having WK cover all of N1 and beyond would be such a treat. It’s been invaluable on my journey towards proficiency and I wouldn’t be nowhere near as well versed in Kanji without it
