Looking for light novel recs!

Hi all. I’m finding it strangely difficult searching for Japanese light novels to read (I like reading physical copies) and was wondering if anyone is able to help here. I’m just about to begin the 安達としまむら series but I’m looking for light novels to have in my reading lineup after I’m done :blue_heart:

A quick rundown of the kind of light novels I’m looking for:

  • I love the slice-of-life, romantic comedy and yuri genres (plus those tend to be easier genres to read than more complex books)
  • I’m not sure exactly what my reading level is, maybe N3 to the lower end of N2, though that’s just an estimate
  • Series are preferable (it’s also somewhat easier than buying separate books right now hahah)

Any recommendations anyone can offer would be much appreciated - I know this is a kind of specific request

if you like yuri i recommend otherside picnic! it’s maybe more on the “novel” side of “light novel” but with N3-N2 and some patience you should be fine.

I don’t know your exact preferences so I’ll just give a list of most of the yuri light novel series I’ve personally read at least a few volumes of (I’ve heard of more but I figure I can’t say much about things I haven’t read yet). Some of these already are decently popular and/or have an anime so there’s probably a decent chance you’ve heard of several already. I added natively links so you can get some idea of the comparative difficulty of each.

Read it if you have read and liked

- or watanare for short. Yuri harem romcom that eventually (spoiler for how the romance turns out) turns into polyamory. Got an anime recently.

週に一度クラスメイトを買う話 - everything else about it is very different but the way the narration switches between the point of view of the two main characters and the story is extremely focused on only those two reminds me of adashima a tiny bit.

I know the author wanted to continue it beyond the current five volumes but it didn’t sell enough for that, but I haven’t read all five yet so can’t say how satisfying the ending is.

私の初恋相手がキスしてた - by the author of 安達としまむら. More of a toxic drama than any kind of romance (I’d say it’s not romance at all genre-wise). Fairly heavy and I wouldn’t go into it expecting things to go particularly well for anyone.

I really liked the first two volumes and the third one a little less. I haven’t read more than that yet though so can’t speak for the series as a whole. Has an anime.

Age gap very heavy on the slice of life. Only two volumes in total.

Very steamy light novel series by the author of watanare. Probably a good idea to mention that the first volume has a lot of dubious consent.

忘れえぬ魔女の物語 - fairly angsty yuri with time-loop sci-fi elements. Only two volumes and I get the impression the author probably wanted to write more but the series didn’t sell enough. The first volume was written for a contest and thus works decently as a standalone, but that’s not too relevant if you’re looking for series.

Has the most explicit discussion of lgbtq+ topics of everything on this list. It also has an anime.

@bblum and @Ditto20 thank you so much, I really appreciate all of the recommendations! I’ll definitely have a look later on and start with some on the easier side, but all of those look really interesting :pink_heart:
