Plan is to listen for ~15 minutes per day. I’m only counting listening without subtitles, as my reading has gotten to the point I will just speed read instead of listen.
Tried to do this in the past an just totally fell off and failed pretty quickly.
Going to give it another shot though as my listening is pretty horrible which really hampers any attempts at conversation of any sort.
Still not totally sure what the best listen practice is but I’m going to aim for a minimum of 15 minutes of active listening a day. Probably going to be mostly N4 listening practice, easy podcasts and comprehensible Japanese on youtube.
My TV is fixed, so I’ll be watching some Japanese TV programs. I haven’t decided which ones yet, but I know there is some good stuff available. I may start just after midnight! I can’t wait.
I watched and listened to “Delicious Food Journey”. Although the title is in English, the program was all in Japanese. Three girls went into an
あめや
飴屋 a (new word for me) and tasted all kinds of sweets, including some kind of jiggly dish. Then they went out to the fields いもほ (digging for sweet potatoes). Of course, everything they ate was
美味しい.
I’m also watching “Girls on a Shoestring”, where 外人, all girls, make furniture with Japanese people. I understood quite a bit of this one, even as the girls spoke Japanese (easy Japanese). There were several mistakes in measuring and assembling, so it had its funny moments.
I’ve never liked the idea of tracking my listening but I felt similarly about reading initially and the winter reading challenge went very well. So, I’ll try to track listening here just for this challenge, just to see how I’m going and try and prod myself to stay consistent, and to try some new things. Aiming for over an hour a day on average.
I’ll probably not get going consistently until like April 10th-ish, and unlike reading, I’ll probably miss some days. But any days I miss will be because I’ll be interacting with Japanese in real life so it’s okay!
Managed to get in some listening today! I usually listen to podcasts, mainly by Asahi Shinbun, they have a lot of different ones. One of my favorites of theirs is ニュースの現場から which has lots of different shows. One of the most easy to listen to ones is called 親モヤ (親のモヤモヤ), where they give advice to listeners on problems regarding childrearing, relationships with their spouses, etc. These episodes don’t use a lot of specialized vocab which makes them easy to understand (compared to other shows of theirs). The latest episode was on 性教育 which was quite interesting.
Second half of the first ノラガミ episode. I think I understood enough without subtitles, though there were parts of the conversation at the end that may have been important that I missed. It took until that coversation to get that the guy’s name is やと, his speech is more difficult than いのり’s.
I’m listening to a newscast . The main story and one I understood the best was about how much rice was being sent to the areas affected by the earthquakes, Hundreds of large bags and thousands of pounds of rice. Then a story on Otani, and one about a young woman teaching a yoga class to older adults. That’s half an hour listening today.
I have to get to bed early tonight as I have an early appointment tomorrow.
I also wanted to squeeze in a 日本語の森 lesson with these, but the night is coming to a close too quickly. I got some podcast and anime episodes in, and いろいろな just put out a great read-along video for the first few pages of FMA. I think it might be his first intermediate/advanced video, since he usually does beginner read-alongs, but his explanations of the grammar and vocab were excellent so I hope he does more.
Easing into the challenge! Honestly, didn’t do as bad on those mock questions as I expected. Definitely feels like my base level of listening comprehension is at a better place than it was when I did the equivalent for the N4.
Saw this pop up on my recommended the other day and had a quick listen to the first few pages, seems like such a good idea, I hope he does more of these!
