I can’t answer all of your questions, but:

  1. I have the English Kindle app and I have three? Japanese dictionaries currently on it.
  2. For manga that are specifically pictures, you cannot click the words, so nope, unfortunately. For things that are typed and have pictures on different pages, it works. But not any of the manga I’ve tried.

  1. The dictionaries function as an independent thing; you can download whatever dictionaries you want and use them with whatever book you want - whether you took it from one of the Kindle/amazon stores or you sent it to yourself from the internet (ie news article).
  2. I’m not the biggest fan of manga so I haven’t actually tried to read manga, sorry :c I have no idea whether it can use the dictionary on characters from manga or not.
  3. Here is a link explaining how dictionaries are added to Kindle – I don’t think you can make it search jisho.org, it seems to only work with actual dictionary books/files.

There are a number of dictionaries available by default when you open the kindle – I selected a Japanese dictionary (for Japanese people) and also a J-E dictionary.

The kindle remembers a default dictionary for whatever language of content you are reading (changes between my default English, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian dictionaries for me automatically depending on what language of book I’m reading) – but if you have multiple dictionaries, it only takes 2 seconds to change it. Highlight a word, click “change dictionary” and then select the one you want to use.

Right now I’m using [デジタル大辞泉] and [Shogakukan Progressive Japanese-English Dictionary]. If you don’t like the ones available by default on your Kindle, you can just find any dictionary online and manually add it to your kindle (see instructions).

4 However, one particularly important thing to note is that Japan has really weird/strict copyright laws, and probably 95% of Japanese books are only available from the Japanese kindle website. In order to purchase content from the website you need access to a Japanese address (doesn’t matter where as you’ll only be sending stuff to your kindle)… so if you don’t have access to a friend in Japan whose address you could use, or a lot of content in Japanese on your computer to sync manually… I don’t know if buying a kindle is worth it.

The Japanese content on the US kindle website is very limited, and sort of strange.
