~Level 7 Leaderboard Group

Oh yeah I’ve watched a tiny bit of the N5 video and mean to go back as it seemed cool!

Does ghost of Tsushima have a lot of older classical dialogue? I’d imagine that could be challenging. I think it’s fun to try things a bit above your level though!

Yep, unfortunately there is lot of it but he seems to be very good about pointing it out… There is a first part where you only listen and try to pick up words. That part flies just over my head, so I forward to the part where he analyses and translates it, even points put differences and nuances in translation to the English version. Pretty cool, but way above my abilities :stuck_out_tongue:

On one side よつばと! seems like a great starter manga to get into reading… Not sure if it’s considered a 少女 or 少年 manga. I guess that’s even before that. In general though, as a guy, I’m kinda wary of picking up a manga series that is written from a teenage girl’s POV  :joy:

I’m thinking to check the One Piece manga but that one is more advanced than よつばと! just from casual checking it… Maybe later…

If you think it would motivate you more to read One Piece then tbh I’d go for it. Haikyuu is way above my level but because I love the anime I’m way more motivated to persevere and I’ve definitely learned and gained familiarity with quite a few grammar points through it. It probably depends how much you think your enjoyment will be impacted by having to look up a lot of things or sometimes accepting just getting ‘the gist’ of some bits - I still find it enjoyable but for others that might be frustrating. I definitely intend to pick up よつばと in the next little while as I think it is a better choice for my reading level but definitely when I’m choosing between them right now I’m way more motivated to push on with Haikyuu. That may partly be to do with the extra accountability a book club brings - though I think there is a one piece one that started fairly recently!

You should try Dragon Ball SD instead if you want some 少年 manga. Its also supposed to be a “absolute” beginner manga…

As usual, it was an awesome lesson. We had a full fledged “spontaneous” conversation. It was so cool. Granted, it was related directly to the material, but I had no idea what she would say next, and I didn’t know how I was going to answer until I spoke haha. Invigorating!

Just to share, if anyone is thinking about reviewing all kanjis learned till now.
Just did a self-study of all the kanjis i learned till now (371 in total), took me less than 30min.

Correct: 729
Incorrect: 13
Summary - 98.25%

The one’s i got wrong are shown below (since i did it quite fast, i did made some dumb mistakes).
I did managed to correct i few typos and honest mistakes, around 10-15 errors.

  • 生life → fault
  • 便use → convenience
  • 由say humbly → reason
  • 失arrow → life
  • 屋room → roof
  • 夜behind → night (i always mess this one up)
  • 泳ice → swim
  • 姉sisters → older sister
  • 助group → help

Readings:

  • 画か → が
  • 長 ka → ちょう (had honestly no freaking idea)
  • 北 はく-> ほく
  • 県 かん → けん

Just sharing, maybe someone wanted to do something like that but thought that would take hours to do or something like that… It was quite fun and im quite happy with the outcome. Did it while listening to this playlist (https://community.wanikani.com/t/wanikani-a-spotify-playlist/48343), so not 100% focused.

Out of context this sounds hilarious :'D

I think Yotsuba is supposed to be 5? With some chapters she doesn’t seem like a girl at all :see_no_evil:
Though I do agree, if you don’t like it, pick up something else. There’s plenty beginner level manga and I’m pretty sure Yotsubato isn’t the easiest either, it’s just so popular because a wide range of people can enjoy it.

Ye Yotsuba is definitely more “Child” pov than “Little Girl” if that makes any sense. Like half of her antics are things I see my nephew doing right now.

Obviously, there’s grammar and vocabulary to worry about, but I think a lot of manga can be considered beginner friendly if the beginner is willing to put in work. I think Haikyuu is pretty friendly to me as a beginner. A few of the characters (especially Tanaka) use a lot of slang, and the initial volleyball vocabulary can be difficult to wade through, but I find it fun to work through, which is the most important part. If you have the dedication, ANYTHING can be a beginner’s text ! (within reason.)

That’s what I kind of thought but wasn’t sure :+1: Thanks

Well done :+1:

I remember the two above easily because I remember the words they are used in better :

  • 画 - in 映画 - movie (えい)
  • 長 - in 社長 - company president, director, manager (しゃちょう)

And now I enter the painful levels :skull: :skull: :skull:

Well done also to @Jobis who my leaderboard tells me has also just made it to level 11!

I am one of those people! Good to hear it didn’t take all that long, I think I’ll give it a go soon too. I wonder how long it would take to do it after level 60

It’s really interesting to see what you got wrong too. A lot of them I find really easy, but obviously you got the ones I normally struggle with correct! I wonder if that’s the case for most people? Or if everyone compared their outcomes there would be some kanji that are very commonly mixed up?

I think there must be some readings that almost everybody struggle. Since i mostly use portuguese for the mnemonics, perhaps i have some advantange in a few readings, and disavantage in others.

And as I said before, i did get others itens wrong, perhaps next time ill do it quicker without correcting the “i typed too fast w/o thinking mistakes”

I literally added everybody on the list, and then within days, the leaderboards just deleted everybody. >_<

Is there some quick way I don’t know about to add everybody quickly. I’m literally needing to type out all your names or copying and pasting them. I mean, I can do it again, but it sucks that I just lost everybody.

I saw how many of you have been leveling up by the way. Good job. One of you are like 2 levels away from me. Get ready to probably be competing with me after I’m done with the tsunami of Enlightened Reviews coming in:

I hope I don’t fail like too many of them. If I do, the lesson or leveling up hiatus may have to go on a bit longer. :<
文字通り試験地獄だよ。

Something I’ve realized from like the one year break I took from WaniKani is that I may know a lot of the Kanji and vocabulary, but when thinking it about in my head to type, it’s not always easy because some vocabulary and Kanji you just don’t use too often. I should perhaps type more Japanese and look at more Japanese stuff.

Oh nooo  That happened to me too once! I think it’s because the leaderboard data is basically saved like a cookie so if you empty your cache/delete cookies it will reset completely. It’s possible your browser does it automatically sometimes

Good luck with the burns :crossed_fingers:

Big level up day!! Congrats!! We had four “painful” graduations. I will see you there soon!

@ganbareniichan @collmomo @maehlum @epona @sycamore @Edzin @caraage @Jobis

I’ll let you in on a little secret: Painful, really isn’t too painful. At least not at level 11. We’ll see how things change at 14 when the radical count drops significantly and we start learning more with what we have rather than with all of the new parts!

kanna

Best userscript you could ever install lol. Kanna-chan is very excited for my first burns!!

I’ve since figured it out but I would confuse 社長 with 会長 because 生徒会長 is ubiquitous in the anime I watch and it was flooding my mind every time I had that review on WK and KS.
