I think I might try doing ‘extensive reading’ then. I know the book well enough that I’ll understand what’s going on even if I don’t understand every sentence. With furigana and quick look up it shouldn’t be too painful, right? (Famous last words )
Just speaking from my experience, I’m currently reading chapter four, it’s pretty tough. If you’re below N3 level, unless you’re feeling crazy passionate and motivated, I would save it for later. At N3 it’s a challenge. It for sure gets easier the more you read, but if you burn out easy, might not be the project to take on right now. Don’t let me stop you from trying though. I’m certainly doing this despite it being above my level xD
Thanks for the «warning»! My plan is to read the English and Japanese text together, checking my understanding of the Japanese along the way. For me at least, this will be extensive reading, reading just to read, not to understand every word. And maybe we’ll have a re-read in a year so everyone can see how far they have come in a year.
Sure thing I’ve been sticking to a similar pace of one chapter every two weeks but I wanna step it up soon since I’m aiming to finish it this year. It’s slow going but it’s gradually getting easier. Hope you have fun with it!
(笑) Read the 4th one in Dutch but the name translations are pretty hair-pulling (also the reason I decided to read it in Dutch, people were using references I didn’t understand as the Spanish version just uses the English names). I need to light some fire under my grammar studies if I’m going to attempt any of these book clubs…
I know that you can buy the book in Japanese from Amazon.co.jp here. Do you know any other good places to buy it? Physical or e-book? I want to put it in the first post in this thread.
CDJapan has the physical book, and Kobo has the eBook. Honto seems to have it too.
People should probably beware the fact that in many instances it has been published as two separate volumes. Watch out for things like 1-1, 1-2 or 上 / 下 in the title.
