Ken’s Study Log

I missed seeing this before, so I’m glad it got quoted.

If it’s Pocket Monsters Special, I have some frequency lists you may be interested in (linked to at the top of this page).

Frequency lists are useful if you want to know whether a word you encounter is worth learning, or if you want to pre-learn some of the most frequent words.

You should be able to open it in any spreadsheet application, including Excel and Google Sheets.

Then you could (for example) filter volume one to show items with a frequency of 10+, and have it sorted by order so you can learn the words in the order they first appear in the volume. (Page numbers are not included, though.)

You’d fine things such as that 同様, while a fine enough word to know, appears only one time in volume one, and only two times across the first six volumes.

On the other hand, 攻撃 appears 21 times in the volume, and 126 times across the first six volumes. (Well, maybe you don’t need to specifically learn this one as it shows up it’s hard not to.)

The main limitation of the frequency spreadsheets is that they are auto-generated, so there could be parsing errors.

I’ll be sure to check this out! What are you using to auto generate the spreadsheets?

YOU are inspiring! Thanks for dropping in Tantivy!

Slowly getting back to a routine… got around 30 or 40 reviews today!

I’m turning the math classes that are holding me back into a Japanese lesson!

Calculus in Japanese → 微積分学 (びせきぶんがく)
Differential Equations in Japanese → 微分学(びぶんがく)

First, I run my purchased digital copies of the manga through Mokuro to extract the text from the images. (That’s why it’s only a few volumes, as that’s all I’ve bought/read through so far.)

Second, I run a script I wrote which does the following:

  1. Takes the extracted text from Mokuro.
  2. Runs it through Juman++ to split it into separate words.
  3. Strips out non-words such as particles and conjunctions.
  4. Tracks word appearance order (accurate to the page of first appearance) and frequency within the volume.
  5. Uses the Python library pyexcel_ods3 to generate a spreadsheet and populate it.
  6. Generates various statistics to output as a web page.

Around 30 reviews today and now going to get some shadowing practice.
It’s been about a year since I learned about pitch accent and out of absolutely nowhere I am way better at detecting pitch accent during my reviews. Trust the process! Stay consistent!
I highly recommend the Wanikani pitch info user script extension if you’re interested in pitch accent!

It’s been a couple of weeks but I have stayed on track with my quarterly goals!

I reached level 5 before the end of October!

As for my goal of working through Blue Period Episode 1 for shadowing practice, I am not going to lie, it has been going ok but I’ve been slacking on listening to it because of I’ve done it so many times! Lol! Even though I haven’t been giving it the focused attention I would have liked, I still try to listen to the episode as much as possible actively and passively. More and more phrases and words start to just pop up in my head when I see their English counterpart. I will definitely be able to speak the whole episode by the end of the year! 頑張って!

頑張ってね!This platform really is a long-term commitment, but it’s so worth it if you keep up with it or a similar SRS system. Flame on! :fire: :fire: :dragon:
