Kanken 2026

I took 漢検 yesterday. 9級. It was four pages, and the first three pages were a cake walk. Those first three pages were question types: Kanji→hiragana, stroke count, stroke completion, related kanji, two-readings for same kanji… I think that’s everything. The last page was where I had to write kanji, and I definitely fell off a cliff. I’d practiced probably half of the level 9 kanji. I think maybe I got 30% of the last page right. I will say that the first three pages, where everything felt easy, was almost a direct result of using wanikani (I guess really only the stroke count wasn’t) Pretty cool stuff.

What format did you take it in, online/test center CBT/in person paper test? I’ve only taken it by CBT so far and will probably do the same next time as well but always curious about the differences

I guess I don’t know what CBT is? I took it in person on paper. There’s a small Japanese school here in Tucson that has offered it every year for many years. I was told that it’s the last year they’re going to offer it, so I don’t know how/where I’d take it in the future. There were around 7 people taking levels 8, 9, 10, and then there were 4 people taking higher levels.

Do you have any sense of how long it takes to get a result if you’re taking the paper version outside Japan?

Computer based testing at a test centre compared to the paper test. I didn’t realise you’d taken it overseas, there’s more options for taking it here in Japan.

I think I’ve seen that it takes 1-1.5 months for results from the physical test here in Japan, so I’d imagine that plus an extra week-ish for overseas? But don’t quote me on that
