Trying to convince the wife to watch

It’s worth giving a shot, if you like that kind of YA fantasy stuff, I certainly enjoyed it enough that I’m now starting to read through the trilogy of books they’re based on.

Today was an okay kind of day, I got woken up loads of times in the night by my wife, who has a congested kind of cold and thus was snoring most of the night. Being a light sleeper is hell sometimes. She’s slowly getting better though, which is good, and I’m slowly developing cold symptoms myself that I’ve clearly caught from here, which is not so good. I was able to stay in bed until half nine in the morning though, which is better than nothing, thank you flexible working.

I did my thirty vocab lessons at 10am, so that they’d come back for reviews along my normal pattern. I then also had the six new vocab lessons that have been introduced as part of the content update to do at 5pm, which was novel. I particularly enjoyed the way they rolled particles into some of the meaning descriptions now, that will be beneficial for learners. It’s also fun seeing more katakana words.

I spent the evening watching Stranger Things, which I’ve neglected for three seasons, so I started from the begging again. I had forgotten how good it was, so I’m planning on binging it as quick as possible. Nice thing about working from home is that I can watch about eight episodes of full length TV a day, or like an entire season of shows if they’re ~20mins long. I’ve been getting through my watch list quite nicely.

No other Japanese learning news to share, since I’m still lacking majorly on every platform but this, alas.

Today has been a pretty standard day in all regards, had to get up at 7:45 and walk my son to nursery and then rush home because I realised that the recycling had to be put out. I managed to get home two minutes before the lorry arrived, just enough time to put everything out, phew.

The rest of the day was less frantic, I watched Critical Role, had a couple of meetings, and finished off the first season of Stranger Things and started on the next. Tomorrow is my lie-in day and also the day when I’ll finally get a haircut done by a barber, not by my wife, for the first time in over a year. Will be weird. Am not looking forward to it, because crippling introversion means sitting in a chair doing small talk is hell. Also having a person touch my head, that I also don’t like. Oh well, the things we must do to maintain a tidy appearance now that the world is slowly opening back up and we actually have to see people once in a while.

I did my final lessons today, so I’m back to 0/0 until I reach my mid-level guru’d radicals stage on Sunday and can do the next batch of kanji to level up on Wednesday as usual. Now, I’m going to go to bed, because I am exhausted.

Today has been an okay day, my wife got my son up on the morning, so I was able to stay in bed until 10am, half sleeping, half trying to sleep. Then I got up and watched him so she could pop over the the fabric shop to try and get some upholstery fabric for a chair she’s upcycling. While she was gone we got the laundry done, had lunch, and then when she got back I prepared for my haircut. Yes, a haircut. My first proper haircut in the barbers for over 18 months. Oh the freshness of a proper haircut. I feel less like I’ve got a lion’s mane when I turn my head now, which is nice.

Review and lesson wise, it’s been a fine day, I’ve had 160 reviews, but no lessons, so that’s all good. I’ll be waking up with 110 to do and another 59 on top of that by 9am, one of the products of Sunday morning always being my mid-level time every other week. I’ll be trying to knock those reviews out as soon as possible and move on with my new kanji lessons to ensure that I’ll get level up on Wednesday morning as per usual.

Now, I’m going to go and read, both because I’ll have to get up early and because Stranger Things is a bit freaky at times and it’s nice to clear my head of that and replace it with some YA fantasy stuff, now that I’m getting on with reading Shadow & Bone, having watched the series on Netflix, as the first book in the trilogy. Speaking of fantasy books, I really wish Brandon Sanderson would get done writing The Lost Metal, the 4th book in the 2nd (Wax and Wayne) arc of the Mistborne series. It’s been five years now!

Today was a fine old day, woken by my son at 8am (because I turn the LED strip alarm clock thing off at the weekends to eek out a bit more of a lie-in) and then, after breakfast, snuggled up on the sofa to do 150 reviews followed by 30 lessons, since it was mid-level day today.

We had our first trip to IKEA since lock down began, which was about as crazy as you’d imagine in terms of queues and traffic, but my wife got a lovely LED pencil lamp, so it was all worth it. We then got a fast puncture in our tire thanks to a fat nail going into the wheel and so had stop at the petrol station where I swapped the quickly deflating tire out for the spare. Means my wife will have to drop it into the shop tomorrow to have it replaced. Stupid nails.

Nothing else to add other than it’s a bank holiday in the UK tomorrow, so I get the day off work, which is nice. It’s not one of the several bank holidays after which the university closes for an extra day, alas, but one day is better than none. I’ve pledged to help my wife box up all the pin badge orders from her recent Kickstarter campaign, which I’ll do while finishing off season two of Stranger Things.

Speaking of which, I just finished an episode and so am going to do what I did last night and go detox my mind by reading. Goodnight, friends.

Today was a fine old day, my wife got up in the morning and took out son to nursery and then she went over to the garage thinking the tire would need replacing from the puncture the other day and it turned out that it only required sealing, at a third of the price of a replacement, so that was good.

The rest of the day was spent mostly watching Stranger Things and playing Hearthstone. About as lazy as a bank holiday gets, so I’ve nothing particularly interesting to report here today, alas. I did all my reviews, but completely failed to do any lessons, because I was roped into helping my wife put all her boxes together for her kickstarter orders.

I finished watching the most recent season of Stranger Things just now and will have to wait for season four, which I’m sure will take ages thanks to Covid-19, in the same way that I’m still eagerly awaiting the new season of Sex Education. Oh well, I’ve got plenty of things on my to-watch list to tide my over. For now, I shall do what I’ve done the last two nights; heading to bed and reading.

Currently waiting for my wife to be done printing labels for all her orders, so reading will keep me awake instead of letting myself fall asleep and then get woken up when she finally come to bed.

Today was an okay kind of day, as per usual, had to get my son up and dressed nicely because my wife told me it was nursery pictures day.. but then it turned out it was tomorrow instead.. que sera. We dropped him off and then went to the sorting office to drop off fifty kickstarter orders of her biscuit pins.

I spent the rest of the day doing usual work stuff, having a nap, doing some more work and watching old SNL clips to stay awake, because were were up till 01:30 last night and both of us as exhausted. Once my son was asleep I made some soup and sat down to start watching Bridgerton at my wife’s recommendation. It’s funny to watch since large portions of it are filmed in Bath, where I live, and therefore many locations are places I’ve been, which is quite odd.

Now, I shall retire to bed and read, for I have hit 0/0 again and am extremely fired from the aforementioned late night last night. I thankfully don’t have a ticket day at all this week (because mine fell on the bank holiday yesterday) so I’m not swamped with work, but I’m back on campus for my week on site next week, so I’m sure I’ll be tired again soon enough.

LEVEL UP DAY! NOW LEVEL 14 ^(again)

I was rudely woken up this morning my son barging into our bedroom at 7:45, despite it being my wife’s turn to drop him off at nursey so I could have a lie-in. My peace was shattered and I failed to return to sleep, alas. Once I got up, I spent the rest of the day half dealing with work and half watching Bridgerton. I’ve managed to complete the entire season now, thanks to home working. I’m not sure what I’ll move on to next, alas, I’m a bit ‘kid in a candyshop’ with no clear plan. I can’t easily watch anime during work hours since I can’t multitask when it comes to subs.

Once my son had gone to bed I jumped up my level up reviews and then managed to do them along with all the radical and kanji lessons for level fourteen in just a scant 10mins - the benefit of having reset and being on a re-levelling streak. Re-learning is much easier than learning. I’m paying more attention to phonetic kanji this time round, after hearing that it’s being recommend by Japanese teachers as a way to improve memory of 音読み readings for the later kanji.

I must take a moment to recognise how happy I am to be carrying on my trend of always levelling up on the same day and maintaining nearly perfect ~7 day level up times. I managed such consistency when levelling from 14-24 last time, so it’ll be all the more perfect if I manage to keep it going all that way from 10-60 this time round. I shan’t put too much pressue on that fact, but it’s certainly pleasing to behold.

Today was tiring day, I got only five hours sleep and then was woke up by my son and had to walk him to nursery in the rain. Alongside work I finally started watching Avatar: The Last Airbender as the thing to watch while I work. I’ve meant to watch it for years.

Super short update, since I just finished playing a two hour Call of Cthulu session and then knocked 70 reviews out, so I need to get to sleep since it’s 01:30. Sorry for it being such a short one, normal service shall resume tomorrow, but I couldn’t not write one!

Today was 0/0 day, I got up and did all my lessons and then all my reviews, despite having lied in until 9:45 because I was catching up on all my sleep. It’s a Friday, so I spent the day watching Critical Role alongside work and then caught up on some more Avatar when that had finished.

My wife took my son over to a friends house after nursery for a couple of hours, so I started watching Jupiter’s Legacy, which is a new super hero show that’s a bit hit or miss. Good action sequences though, in general. Only eight episodes of that to watch and I’ve watched four, so I’ll be back to Avatar again once I’ve finished.

I just finished up my day by doing a quick 60 reviews to cap the day off with 0/0 again and will wake up to 27 reviews, judging by the forecast. Only 131 total reviews tomorrow, but 277 on Sunday when I get my mid-level guru reviews come through. Always having my mid-level on Friday means I get a lot of Guru 2 and Master reviews coming through lately, which makes it a fun day. That’s something to worry about on Sunday though, which is my lie-in day, which will be nice.

Now, it’s nearly 1am, but thankfully I’ve managed a longer study log entry again this time, yay.

Today was an okay kind of day, it was my turn to get my son up in the morning, but thankfully he didn’t wake up to 8:15. I was till pretty tired though from waking up at like 5am and trying to go back to sleep. So I got him up, gave him breakfast, let him play with his new dinosaur play set, then chilled on the sofa. After putting the laundry on and him having a snack, we finally woke my wife up at 11am and proceeded to engage in operation get rid of the crap in which we cleared out all the stuff my son never playes with any more and generally spring cleaned the downstairs of the house.

It was a rainy day, so we were inside all day and in the end we all sat down together and watched The Mitchells vs The Machines (for the second time in my case) and marvelled how the main character, called Katie, looks and acts a lot like our friend Katy. It’s too much of a coincidence, I see no other answer other than that they based the character entirely on her. I refuse to be dissuaded from this belief.

In the evening I finally finished watching Jupiter’s Legacy and then watched Men In Black: International.

Oh wait, this is a study log, not a journal, I should probably mention something about WaniKani! I’ve done one-hundred and fifty reviews today over various times, but shall wake up tomorrow to 150, since it’s my lie-in day. I’ll immediately tackle my radical and kanji mid-level reviews so I can do the new kanji lessons ASAP and ensure that I get my levelling done on Wednesday morning to keep my ~7d 1hr streak going.

Now, the job of writing a study log being done, I shall call it a day since it’s almost 1am here, eep!

Advanced warning: this is a complaining about parenting heavy update

Today has been a frankly appalling day. My son woke me up about 4am saying he had a sore tummy, I got him to go back to sleep on his back, then he woke up again and asked for cream on it, so I assumed it was sore = irritated skin, not sore = sick. Unfortunately it was sick, because he woke me up again at 04:30 having been sick all over his bed. Cue two hours spent cleaning him off, changing all the covers, making sure he wasn’t going to be sick again, getting him to go back to sleep just before 6AM. Then he was sick again.

In the end, my wife took him downstairs so I could get a few hours sleep and then at 9am I got up, went downstairs and traded out, so she could get a few hours sleep. I did all my reviews and lessons, got the second load of laundry done, and generally just chilled out while my son slept on the sofa. All in all, not a great start to the day. We had planned to go to the shops, but my wife went on her own in the end.

After totally failing to keep a banana down earlier in the day, he managed to keep toast down at lunch, so we had rice for dinner and he seemed okay going to bed, so hopefully we’ll have no more sickness and he can go to nursery tomorrow. We’ve no idea what he ate, but it must have really disagreed with him.

Anyway, in all other news, today was mid-level day so I should level up as usual on Wednesday. I’ve had about 400 reviews today thanks to doing all the new lessons in one go, but I should only have around 100 total tomorrow, which is much nicer. I’m back on campus all week, so will probably be exhausted from running around doing on-site stuff, but I’ll still be keeping up with everything.

I’ve finished the first season of Avatar and started watching the second season this evening, I’ll be watching it all week at work on my second monitor so can probably finish the entirety of the season this week and start on Legend of Korra.

Now, this update has run pretty long and most of it was telling the woeful story of terrible evening we all had in my house, so hopefully if I go to bed now I’ll not get woken up and get all the sleep I’m missing, but I’d rather be pessimistic and assume I won’t. That way I won’t be disappointed to get woken up a bunch, just tired.

Today was a better day than yesterday, thankfully. My son slept all through the night and wasn’t sick again, but he was complaining in the morning about feeling bad, so we didn’t risk taking him to nursery (if they’re sick there, they can’t go back in for 48hrs) and now he can go back tomorrow. My wife dropped me up on campus and I got on with my day.

Did lots of computing related stuff at work and my day was otherwise fairly uneventful. I’ve just done a hundred reviews to get back to 0/0, but I’ve only got about sixty to do tomorrow, so that’s good. I spent the evening watching Avatar some more and playing Hearthstone and now I’ve just remembered I need to do some more keyboard soldering to fix a key that keeps mis-registering, so I’m going to call this update done and go do that before bed, since I can’t do it in the morning.

Today was okay-ish, though I’ve been exhausted all day from going to bed too late last night and my son waking me up at 7:10 because he dropped a toy, asking for water at 7:20 and then dropping another toy at 7:35 before finally getting up at 7:45. Kids are such fun. He was very sad to not get a biscuit, because he said “the light was white, I’ll show you” to which I reminded him that he’d woken me up three times before the light turned white. No biscuit for you, buddy, try again tomorrow.

Work was okay, tired myself out having to haul old kit across campus so we can securely decommission it. Nothing like hauling a trailer full of old computers across the green, with students silently judging you. Yes, I know I’m out of shape, it’s been a year and a bit of lockdown, nobody has been getting enough exercise thank you very much.

When I got home and after monster went to sleep, I got watching the end of the last season of Avatar, so now I can start on Legend of Korra, yay! I just did thirty reviews to end the day on 0/0 and it’ll be level up day tomorrow, with those reviews coming in at 7pm.
