LEVEL UP DAY!

Got woken up early today after going to bed super late, so I had a very tiring day. I’m thankfully that since I never drink tea or coffee, my body reacts very well to caffeine based drinks, so I got one of those and managed to not fall asleep at my desk, hoorah. I spend some of the morning reading all the Avatar sequel comics before getting back to watching Legend of Korra. When I got him, I finished watching the first season and then levelled up, did all my kanji and radical lessons, and got on with watching other stuff for a bit.

Now, it’s 00:13 and I pledged not to stay up so late again, so I’m calling this a well earned short study log entry. Thankfully I have very few reviews tomorrow so I shall have a nice and easy day, I think. That said, I’ll do my 41 vocab lessons once I get to work, which’ll mean more reviews to do, but my apprentice items remain nicely low and so I’ll still have low review numbers the next few days.

Today has been an okay day. Woken up at 7:30am by my son and then had to get him up and dressed so we could drop him off at nursey and get onto campus for work at a good time. I’ve only one more day on campus after today and then I’m on holiday for a week, yay! I’ve still got a lot of stuff to finish doing on campus tomorrow, so I’ll be rushing around alas, but I can keep Critical Role in my ear at least.

I totally failed to get my lessons done this morning, so I’ll do them all tomorrow - if I have enough energy when I go onto campus. My energy levels are all over the place lately, mainly because I keep going to bed too late, which I am more or less doing again today since I’ve just finished playing my Call of Chthulu session for the night and am still chatting to my other players while I’m doing this.

That being the case, I’m going to stop writing, good night! ^-^

This has been an extremely tiring day. My son woke me up at 6:45 asking where mummy was, because my wife had been out visiting a friend when he went to bed and I told him she’d be back in the morning. So I told him she was asleep and that he should be too… and back he went to sleep. He then woke me up at 07:30 and I thought ‘to hell with it’ and let him come into our bed which meant the day starting.

I got him dressed and we headed off for the day, him to nursery, me to campus. My work day was a whirlwind of making sure I had everything set up for handover, since I’m both off campus and on annual leave next week. My desk is now covered in boxes that are ready to deploy, stuff that needs reconfiguring, etc. I hope my colleagues who are on-site next week don’t mind, goodness knows they do the same to me.

This evening my wife and I got some McDonald’s (I’m very fond of the Veggie Supreme and the Veggie Dippers, let it be known) and watched Googlebox before I decided to come sit in bed and watch Legend of Korra rather than sitting in the office, since I’m totally exhausted. I managed to watch five episodes without falling asleep and now it’s midnight and my wife is going to come to bed, so I’ll hopefully get at least seven hours sleep, rather than last nights five zzzz

I was way too tired for lessons today, so I’ll do them tomorrow morning and still hit 0/0 for this level before I guru my radicals and kanji on Sunday morning (as per my usual schedule) and get my mid-level kanji and vocab lessons. I just realised that I forgot to change my level on my last two updates, so excuse the orange pencils that now appear on them

Oh and I’m chucking out a congratulations to @Kumirei who has safely arrived in the US - I’m super excited to see your new life in America take shape, buddy!

Today has been okay, woken up at 7:30 and then slept on the sofa for a couple hours while my son was watching cartoons. Once my wife woke up, we all had lunch and then headed off to do the weekly shop. This was about as exciting as you’d expect, but at least the day was sunny and we listened to tunes while driving there and back.

The afternoon was a whole lot of nothing, just killing time till dinner, at which time we all had pizza and watched Lego Masters. Once my son was in bed, I got back to watching Legend of Korra and I finished the third season. I’m now sitting here at nearly 1AM, with 7mins left of the third episode of season four - I suspect, at this rate, that I’ll have finished watching it on Monday, so will give my thoughts, hehe.

Oh and I hit 0/0 today, yay! That makes it a streak of six levels now ^-^

Today has been a fairly tiring day. I got a lie-in till 11am, but I was still feeling crummy all day due to having some sinus issues and stuff. Had lunch with my wife and son, watched some stuff together while chilling on the sofa and then she took him out for a few hours which gave me some more time to binge Legend of Korra.

After bed time, I finished watching the series and my feelings are thus:

I think the last season was rushed in some ways, with a lot of time being dedicated to Korra recovering from the poison, regaining her Avatar State, etc. It made me miss the time spend with all her friends and made the end of the season feel a little bit short, especially the final episode which only gave like 5mins to end ending after the fight, which is a bit lacking when you consider that The Last Airbender got a much longer season finale. On the other hand, I’m happy with how things turned out and that Korra and Asumi finally got together, etc. I’m now reason the two sequel comics for more of that goodness.

Now, I’ve just had to to 200 reviews because I let them pile up a bit during the day and had pledged to never end the day with any reviews to prevent myself going back into that hole of having massive review stacks. I’m on holiday all week, so can take my time with lessons and stuff, which is nice. I’ve not really got any week off plans other than to just chill out, watch stuff, maybe read a bit, etc. I’d love to be playing the Mass Effect Legendary collection, but I really can’t justify the purchase right now, alas.

I have quite mixed feelings with the whole Korra series as I can relate way less to the characters then I could in the Airbender series. Personally, I do see part 3 and 4 on the stronger sides of the series though. But I almost did not even make it to watch them…

Today was an okay day. I was woken up at 07:40 by my son and then had to do the nursery run. I had pledged to my wife that I’d walk him to nursery all week since she had to drive me to work all last week, so it seemed fair. I can’t complain on the grounds that it’s probably good exercise that I need since I won’t be doing anything else this week.

Speaking of which, I really didn’t do much today. In fact, for the first time in ages I felt a little bored and directionless having finished binging all the Avatar universe stuff, seven seasons, six graphic novel trilogies, etc. over the course of the past few weeks. I tried to get back into watching The Great Pretender, but only managed one episode before feeling kind of antsy and wanting to do something at the same time as watching things, so I switched to watching other stuff. I’ll get back to it though, when I have more focus, because it’s great.

I did all seventy of my lessons and returned to 0/0 at 10am today since I figured I had no reason not to, it being my week off and the number of reviews not being an issue. Means my apprentice count is up to 160, which is about as high as I let it get, but that’s fine since I have … well… nothing else to do really.

Since I have to walk my son to nursery again tomorrow and it’s gone midnight, I’m going to retire to bed and read, but I hope that everyone else is having lovely weeks!

Today was a very tiring day. I didn’t sleep very well, waking up at 5am due to some 消化不良 pain and having to get up and take antacids meant that I didn’t really fall back to sleep well and so was super tired by the time my son woke up at 7:40 (I don’t know why he doesn’t just wait the five minutes till the DIY groclock turns white so he can get a biscuit as a reward - body clocks are weird) and had to walk him to nursery.

Walking outside woke me up sufficiently that I didn’t fall asleep when I came back home, or have any naps during the day. I started re-playing Final Fantasy XIV today. I made a new account and a new character for two reasons The first was that I’d only gotten to level 68 before and that was a couple of years ago, so I’d forgotten most of the story. The second was more a matter of economics; I’d purchased the game originally on my Steam account, as I had the other expansions up to Stormblood. Because of how Square Enid handles things, I’d have to had bought Shadowbringer through Steam, which would have cost £29. Instead, I was able to buy a key for the ‘complete edition’ (base game and every expansion up to the present) for £19 - which also came with a month of game time.

So now I have a plan fo the rest of my week, get levelling a new character up. Thankfully my appearance data was saved on my local storage, so I was able to make a new character with the exact same appearance and name as my old one on a world server that has ‘preferred’ status - giving you 100% extra XP until you hit level 70. The hour I played tonight got me to level 9 already, so hopefully in the next few days, if I spend most of the day playing, I might even be able to get close to the end of the base game. We’ll see. If nothing else, this is getting me over the grump I was having about not quite being able to afford to get the Legendary Edition of Mass Effect and play that this week.

In learning news, I’ve done 250 reviews in the last two hours and so my finger are sore. That being the case and since it’s almost midnight here (and I’ll have to walk my son again in the morning) I’m going to get some sleep. Tomorrow is level up day, which is nice, and I’ve got absolutely nothing to do all day but play and relax zzzz.

Oh - if any of you are TTRPG fans, you might be interested to know that I’ll be finishing my little five session Call of Cthulu campaign on Thursday. The group formed in the Cute Keyboard Club companion server ‘The Tabletop Garden’ and we’re currently gearing up for a West Mashes style D&D 5E campaign for which I’ve made a character called Joel Brightdawn, a Protection Aasimiar who is a Life Cleric. Looking forward to finally being a player in a campaign (which I never have) rather than a DM like I usually am.

I only just realised that I completely failed to post an update yesterday, sorry!

Today was an okay kind of day. I woke up super tired and had to walk my son to nursery. I was tired because I’d levelled up at 10pm yesterday and so my 4hr reviews came in at 2am. I could have just let things fall as they may, but it frustrated me that if I left the reviews to do in the morning then I’d get the 8 hour review to do later in the day and this would result in less time than usual in my mid-level.

Anyway, I walked my son to nursery and was home by 8:30am, so woke my wife up, made her breakfast, then spent the day playing FFXIV. I realised that being on a preferred server with the 100% EXP boost means that I out level the main story quests and so I went back and levelled up second job on the character so that I can switch between them so I’m not wasting EXP on out levelling content. As it turns out I got my primary role to 30 and the secondary one to 21 while the main story quests are still at 17, so I’ll probably level a 3rd job. Part of this is due the system that means if you’re levelling a job that is lower level than your highest levelled one, you get 100% extra EXP on that too, which means 200% bonus EXP.

I finished my last Call of Cthulhu campaign just now. We riddled the house of evil and survived, so I’ll call that a win. It’s now last 1am, so I should finish this and get some sleep. My wife is doing drop-off in the morning and then heading off to spend all day with her grandmother re-upholstering a free armchair she got, so I’ll have the house to myself and won’t be judged for compulsively spinning in my chair, which my wife always complains about me doing, yay!

Oh and in final news, vaccinations opened up today for those 34+ (I’m 34) and so I spent the first hour today refreshing the page trying to find a vaccination slot at a centre that wasn’t 50 miles away. In the end I managed to get an appointment for Sunday in Bristol, which is only 10 miles and to book my 2nd shot at Bath Racecourse which is only 5mins away, so I’m feeling good about that. Looking forward to getting my vaccinations out the way very much! I’m not fond of needles in general, but I’m super okay with them in this instance!

I complete failed to post an update yesterday because I was up too late, so sorry for that, Today has been a super tiring day, so this will be a short update. We took my son to a family theme park thing today (despite everything) and were blessed with good weather, but lots of crowds. I am therefore massively exhausted so am going to sleep after I finish writing this.

I just got done doing sixty reviews and tomorrow when I wake up it’ll be mid-level reviews and lessons time, fun fun fun. I’ll hopefully have time to write a better study log tomorrow to make up for my very lacking one now and my missed one.

I’ve got my vaccination in the afternoon and hopefully they’ll let me have it in my left arm so that my right arm (which is osteoarthritic) doesn’t end up completely useless.

Today has been a very up and down kind of day. I was woken by my son at 7am, so had to get up, chill on the sofa for an hour, then do my reviews while he was eating breakfast and then try and sleep on the sofa for a bit, which I failed to because he just wanted to play. Kids are so selfish.

Our new neighbours moved in at about 10am today and I can hear them talking right now. Our previous neighbour was a single guy that lived alone, so the difference in noise will be something we need to adjust to. It’s easy to get used to a fairly quiet life being a semi-detached end of terrance house. We had to move from our last two places due to noise, so hopefully they’ll prove to be nice. Only time will tell.

I had my jab at 4:40PM and had to spend 20mins standing in a queue in the rain to get in, which is understandable given the space constraints in these places - I was glad I had an umbrella. After queuing, I went in, got the jab, then had to sit for 15mins for ‘observation’ which is a nice way of saying they watch everyone to make sure they don’t pass out or something. There ere about 25 of these ‘observation’ chairs and given we had to spend 15mins sat in them, it was clearly why the line was so long. I kind of wish they’d just had a ‘you must sit unless you have somebody waiting’ system, but que sera.

I’ve spent the evening playing FFXIV while the muscle pain associated with a vaccination slowly comes on. Now it’s nearly midnight and although I get a little lie-in tomorrow, it’s a work day, so I’m going to head to bed with a couple of ibuprofen and hope that I don’t wake up to any side-effects. I recognise my privileged in being able to take a sick day to recoup should I need it; when I worked in retail I never had such a luxury with out stringent three-absences-a-year-and-you-get-written-up policy. Retail sucked; it’s amazing I stuck it out for thirteen years before redundancy forced me into computing.

Oh look, my apprentice numbers are done to 56, yay! Means I can do a bunch of lesson tomorrow if I feel okay and not have to worry too much ^-^

Today has been an okay day, got to lie in until 10am and then had to get up for work. My muscle pain from my Covid-19 jab is still there, but getting better as time passes, which is about what I’d expect. I’ve been lucky that this has been my only side-effect from the Pfizer vaccine, given reports of some people kind of getting knocked on their ass by feelings of flu like symptoms.

Tomorrow I have to go on campus for the day to help out my colleague who is working by themselves since my other colleague is on annual leave. I also have to move my entire desk setup over to a complete different office for the fourth time in this pandemic. We’ve been told that we have to go back on campus every other week rather than every three weeks from next week as work on-site is increasing and in order to facilitate this while working around occupancy limits we have to go into a bigger office (or rather, the large meeting room, haha.) bit annoying since in the next couple of months government limits will relax and most of us will be fully vaccinated, but hey hum.

Right, now it’s 00:22 and my wife is glaring at me for typing because she wants to go to bed, so I’m cutting this short. I shall endeavour to A) do lessons and B) write a longer update tomorrow.

Today was a pretty tiring day. I was woken up by my son at 5am, but thankfully managed to get him back to sleep. Then he woke up again at 7am… briefly fell back asleep… then woke up at 7:20… I had to coax him back asleep by saying he could come and give us a hug once his light turned white. That worked, at least. I could have used that extra 45mins of sleep, personally.

I went onto campus after we dropped him off at nursery and had to spend the day doing a lot of physical on-site stuff, which is always fun. At 11am my wife called to say that she’d had to go pick monster up from nursery since he’d had a massive melt down and thrown stuff; which is a first, to be fair. So she had to look after him for the rest of the day, poor thing. At 5-ish I unwired and cleared all the stuff of my desk, then carted it across to building my team are moving in to and had to set my desk back up in there. The new office is, as I said yesterday, actually a large meeting room that we use for monthly meetings, usually holding fifty people, now allowed to hold six at most.

I look forward to moving back to our regular office later in the year, because this building is much newer and therefore far cleaner and brighter than any computing related workspace has any right to be. I like my office space uncarpeted and covered with strewn screws and cables, thank you very much.

I finished watching Invincible today, which I found to be a pretty great series for an adult orientated super-hero story. Amazon seems really keen on making this sort of thing after the success of The Boys. I liked the series well enough to start reading through the comics and now I’ve got over 200 issues of Invincible and the related titles to read through, yay!

Tomorrow is my ticket day and it’s midnight, so I guess I’d better go to bed, but I’m working from home the rest of the week at least and my wife is doing nursery drop off tomorrow so I can have a bit more rest I hope.

Well hey strangers!

I’m sorry that I have been absent for the best part of a week. When I finished watching Invincible I decided that I wanted to read all the comics, so I got hold of all the volumes and… well… I completely abandoned anything but radicals for a while. I’ve done about six hundred reviews today as well as thirty lessons in order to get back to 0/0. Oh and I levelled up last Wednesday.

Something that also happened on Wednesday was getting seconded onto the IT Security team at the university to help cover increased workload lately. This suits me fine, as cyber security has been a side focus for a long time, both in terms of my part time BSc Cyber Security and all the additional training I’ve done on things like Immersive Labs, Pluralsight, and Linux Academy over the past three years at the university and my job shadowing within the team. I’ve been told I’ll be working with them for two weeks and then we’ll see where things stand. It makes for nice variety at least.

Tonight was my first time playing D&D rather than DMing it and we had a four hour adventure as part of our Discord servers ‘West Marshes’ style campaign. It’s been great that we can find a group of us that are happy to play on EU time when most of the DMs are on US time.

Now it’s late and I’ve got work tomorrow after a nice bank holiday off, so I shall draw this to a close, but once again, I’m sorry that I’ve not updated for all this time and I’ll get back on it now ^-^

I have been crap lately.

I’ve been rushed off my feet at work with my new role within the IT Security team and I’ve therefore been unable to find time during the day to do reviews and stuff and so I’ve been getting them all piled up again. I’m posting mainly to hold myself accountable to the fact that I need to get my stacks back down again quite badly!

I feel bad that I have also been failing to keep this study log up to date, which is pretty shoddy of me. I now spend a lot of my day at work type in things up, from documenting stuff to writing standard solutions to things we get tickets about, etc. I’m therefore kind of typing burned out lately too.

Important thing is to be kind to myself and not get too worked up about these things. I will get my reviews done. I will get back to writing here more regularly. I shall try and actually take my breaks during my work day instead of working through and focussing on getting everything done the moment it comes in.

To me this sounds like life is catching up. Take your time… and please don’t get burned out. It’s not worth it.

Maybe this is a chance to rethink your level up strategy and work it around your on-site/off-site time? At least until you settle into this new role a bit more…
