Joeni's Journey (A Study Log) πŸ—“

I’ve started re-watching it today, since I’m going to see the movie (Mugen Train) next weekend, and wanted to refresh. I like it so much. Tanjiro is such a gentle soul!

I got woken up at 7am this morning by more drilling and hammering from the house next door, despite being told that the work was finished. I was thinking that after the weekend we’d get no more disruption, but I guess now. Either way, I got up, made my lunch, then headed off up to campus for work.

CONTAINS RANT ABOUT CO-WORKER

RANT START
I then found out that my colleague who is meant to be on site helping me is not in because they have β€˜private’ meetings that can’t be carried out in an open office. I pointed out that we have five small office rooms available for meetings that are entirely free, as well as a dozen other locations on campus. I was told β€œI appreciate your thinking”. Every other week I’ve been on campus recently, they’d only come on campus two days out of the five and only for four or five hours on those days. I’m getting kinda pissed off by it because it’s pretty unfair in terms of division of the work that needs doing.
RANT FINISH

I did all my reviews once I sat down at my desk, but then totally failed to do my lessons. Oh well, I’ll do them tomorrow. I then spent the rest of the day working through on-site tickets and stuff from the end of the last week while starting to watch Superstore, which my wife recommended tome. I also managed to watch a few more episodes of Demon Slayer over lunch, which continues to be great!

I completely and utterly failed once again to get caught up on BunPro or Kitsun. I’m still not giving myself any grief over this however, because stuff on campus is fairly crazy. I’ll try to catch up next week when things are a bit quieter.

Just a short update today so I can go to bed at a reasonable time and not feel so crappy in the morning, I hope. Unless, of course, I get woken up by drilling again.

I again was woken up at around 7am by the renovations next door, which was super annoying. I can’t wait till they’re done so I can at least stay asleep until my son wakes up like normal. Nothing like getting shocked awake by drilling.

I got to work and did my reviews as per usual. I then had a super busy day running around campus fixing workstations, moving equipment back to my office for fixing, etc. Such is the glorious adventure that is university computing. On the plus side, it was a beautiful day and the campus is starting to come alive with people again after a year of it being a ghost down. It’ll be empty again in a month as all teaching stops in time for assessment season, but it’s nice seeing people out by the lake or playing frisbee.

I did my remaining lessons once my son went to sleep and they came back for Apprentice 2 review at 11pm, so they’ll be ready to get to Apprentice 3 once I get to work in the morning. I should also be levelling up tomorrow afternoon, all being well, since those reviews are set to come in at 5pm, as is fairly usual for my level up Wednesday afternoon and then level up Wednesday morning the next week routine.

Nothing to note on the BunPro or LingoDeer front, because I’ve frankly been entirely too busy. I’m just happy to have returned to 0/0 for the second time this level before level up comes around. Now I’m going to go to bed, in the sure knowledge that I’ll get woken by drilling again. I’d rather expect that and be pleasantly surprised if I don’t.

I can relate to this a lot. They started construction for a new building right next to where I live just a few weeks ago, so every morning at 7AM loud banging noises wake me up like clockwork. The worst part is that after 2 hours or so, they just completely quiet down. Why can’t they do the loud work in the afternoon or so when everyone is awake?

My wife said exactly this!

It was all loud with drilling and banging when we left to drop monster to nursery and me up to campus and when she got home there was no construction noise, just the two guys yelling back and forth to each other occasionally.

It’s so inconsiderate.

LEVEL UP DAY!

Today I was woken up, once again (as I had predicted) at around 7am by the work next door. I really wish they’d just cut it the hell out. Then at the usual time my son woke up (who manages to sleep through this crap) and I got him ready for nursery while my wife got up. I was on campus by 8:40, walking through the morning sun and through the field of flowers and trees that separate the School of Management car park from my office. Can’t say I hate it as a walk, it’s very pretty

It was my day on tickets and so I was pretty much rushed off my feet all day. Lots of old workstations to replace, a high powered computational workstation for fluid dynamics that required a rebuild, and some specialist lab machines to deploy.

After my day of work was complete, my last guru reviews for level 11 came in and I levelled up to 12 again. I got my usual lessons done, then had them come back at 9pm for review, which means I’ll have them in the morning when I get to work to get to Apprentice 3 as the cycle begins anew.

Now I’m going to avoid writing another essay of a study log post, listen to some WORLD ORDER, and go to bed, because I’m exhausted!

Ear plugs, dear - I’ve been sleeping with them for years. You’ll still be able to hear stuff, including your son if he should cry out in the night, but it muffles and turns down the volume on the world.

So, predictably, I was woken by drilling again. I’d quite like if they stop all that soon, because a week of getting woken that early hasn’t happened since my son was much younger and I’m not enjoying the nostalgia.

It was a a pretty standard day in all other regards, reviews done as soon as I got to work, lots of stuff to do all around campus, then a relaxing evening watching Superstore again. I have once again failed to do my BunPro reviews or new lessons; I’m not sure why I feel the need to keep commenting on that fact other than accountability.

Since I’m extremely tired and haven’t had anything particularly exiting happen today, I shall make this a short update. It’s my last day on campus for three weeks tomorrow, so I’ll hopefully start feeling less tired after that. Plus, hopefully the building work will be finished so I can actually have a lie-in on the weekend again.

I actually wore ear plugs for the first six months of my son’s life, since we had his crib in our room, I’m a light sleeper, and babies snore. I don’t need them so much these days since things are quiet usually. I like having white noise to fall asleep to, so having earplugs in is a bit of a pain in that regard. I’m just holding out hope that the work stops zzzz

For the first time in over a week, I didn’t get woken up by building work, hoorah!

Waking up at usual time, my son came and jumped on us to wake us up. I was up on campus at usual time and did my reviews as soon as I got in, then I got to work finishing the last of my on-campus work for the week. Standard situation where not everything got done, so have to pass some stuff back on to my colleagues who are on campus next week, but I started the week with around twenty on-site tickets to handle and finished with just four to have to put back into our queue. I’ll call that good going, considering all the other stuff that came up during the week.

My wife has been feeling pretty under the weather, so I’ll have to get up in the morning and take my son downstairs and try and entertain him for the day so Helen can have a little bit of peace and quiet, which so very much deserves. Hopefully a nice day will mean I can take him to the part or something, not that I’ve got the energy or will for it, but that’s par for the course.

I totally failed to do any lessons this morning, so will have to do all seventy of them tomorrow morning if I plan on getting to 0/0 this level. It’s been hard being on campus and having a lot of physical work to get through, so the next few weeks should be easier while I’m at home.

I did spend some time in areas that I don’t usually this week, which was nice, including the CAD-CAM lab where we have some very fun stuff, like pair of Ultimaker S5 Pros and a dozen Ultimaker S5s, as an A1 sized laser cutter, a pair of A2 ones (all CadCam) and three A3 ones (all Epilog). Finally chatted with the supervisor of the lab to see if it was okay for me to use the laser cutters since I’m staff, not a student, and turns out it’s perfectly cool - which is nice since we’ve had to push back ordering our own laser cutter at home until the new year and I’ve been wanting to make some more custom acrylic keyboard bits ^-^

Right, this has been very much an essay and much more of a diary entry than a study log, but que sera. Hopefully the weekend won’t end up being too stressful!

Today has been a long, long day. I hit 0/0 though, at least.

My son woke up up at 7am, so I bundled him downstairs in his duvet and told him I wouldn’t turn the TV on until his light turned white (there’s a low red night light in his room - really an LED strip I’ve programmed - that turns while at 7:45 as an β€˜okay to get up now’ signal to try and train him to understand what an acceptable wake up time is) and promptly tried to fall back to sleep on the sofa with him asking me every few minutes if it was time yet. Super relaxing.

I did all my lessons after I’d given him breakfast and then the rest of the day was an effort in entertaining him. My wife has been feeling crummy the last few days, typical cold symptoms, blocked nose, etc. but today she lost sense of taste and smell, so booked her self in for a Covid-19 test. My lateral flow test was negative (in the UK we get these for free - a box with seven tests in to last three weeks of twice weekly testing) and so I took monster out to get some more pain killers and stuff.

Once it was past snack time, we washed the car. Then we had lunch. Then we went to the park. When we got back to was review time for me and quiet time for him. After that, we painted a sun catcher, did some playing with cars, then had some more quiet time. It was a long day, but not a particularly arduous one apart from the few tantrums that he had wanting to go up and see mummy, with me having to remind him that she was sleeping, so it would be a not nice thing to go jump on her.

I’m expecting a very similar day tomorrow, so I’d best cut this diary entry study log short and get some sleep. I’m already achy and tired and my body hates me! On the plus side, it was a successful WaniKani day, passing 90% of all my reviews and feeling very good about myself. On another thread where somebody was considering resetting, I extolled this was one of the benefits; you get great satisfaction from getting the stuff right when re-learning, rather than the crushing feeling of only getting like 50% of your reviews right when just piling through a stack of 2000 reviews. Having tried both methods of recovering after a break, I far prefer this one.

Today has been another tiresome day, was you can expect from yesterdays post. My wife is still feeling crummy, so I’ve been doing stuff with my son all day. He woke me up pretty early again and so it was a morning of being snuggled up on the sofa watching cartoons and then doing laundry. After lunch we had a run down to the shop for essentials. The road that leads down to the village from where we live has some beautiful cherry blossom trees lining the side of the road, so I was taking some pictures and trying to explain to my four-year-old son (fairly fruitlessly) about θŠ±θ¦‹

I really need to go down to the big park because there’s also an alley of cherry blossom trees there and I should make an effort to try and enjoy them while they’re still in bloom, because the weather here lately means that the trees are already starting to loose petals in the wind. My son rather adorably pointed and said it was like snow.

I was curious about how cherry blossom trees gained prevelance in the UK and was fascinated to read about about Collingwood Ingram, who was a British ornithologist and horticulturist. In 1926, he was considered a world authority on Japanese cherry trees and when he was asked to address the Cherry Society in Japan, he found there was a thought-extinct variety of white cherry tree, which it turned out he had seen in Sussex, so he was able to reintroduce this species to Japan, which became known as Taihaku. Turns out there’s a book about him called β€œCherry Ingram: the Englishman who saved Japan’s Blossoms’ - I’m not much of a non-fiction reader, but part of me is fascinated to read about his life.

Now that I’ve managed to dedicate almost an entire post to 摜 - I shall head to bed, since I have to walk my son to nursery early in the morning and then have a full day of work (thankfully from home) ahead of me.

Today has been about as exhausting as you’d expect. Woken up at 7:45, rushed out the door to take my son to nursery. It was a nice walk, because he was so happy to be walking through the grounds of the hospital, which I’ve worked out recently, despite loads of times walking him to nursery, to be the true fastest route. He gets a real kick out of it and then enjoys running up the hill to nursery, which gets me there quicker and gets me home before my work hours start at 9am.

My wife is still feeling pretty crummy, so I’ve been helping her out with food, etc. through the day and generally taking care of things around the house, fitting stuff around work. I was happy to hear today that I all the work I had done on campus replacing machines that were failing got me several calls to my manager praising my efficiency, which is good to hear when it was an exhausting week getting it all done.

Tomorrow, if my wife is feeling better, I’ll be joining her in the car to take her orders into the sorting office for posting, since she doesn’t feel up to that. If she still feels horrid, I might have to walk all the way down there, so I hope not. Either way, I’d better keep this log entry shortish.

I’ve been efficiently keeping up with my reviews, etc. and so expect to level up on Wednesday as per usual. I still need to do my lessons tomorrow and Wednesday so I can hit 0/0 for the second time this level, as is my preference. I’m still slacking with BunPro… as I keep shamefully admitting to in every study log post, oops.

Yeah, @Joeni さん is a time traveller from the future - didn’t you know?
You see, in the future the neural interface was finally developed which rendered all other input devices obsolete. But naturally, such a hardcore keyboard fan as @Joeni さん couldn’t accept it, so he had to go to the past to the time when keyboards were still widely used, which is our time

I’ve been exhausted all day, from having less than four hours sleep thanks to my wife waking up a lot due to her congestion, my son waking up a few times, and just general inability to sleep because my wife didn’t let me put my rain noise on because she had a headache and I find it hard to sleep without it these days, busy brain being what it is. I got woke at 7:45 (my son obeying the LED strip for a change) and then had to quickly walk him to nursery and then walk home to start my ticket day. Queue the same thing in the afternoon, finishing work and then going to pick him up and walk him home. Two days of that, when my wife and I usually switch off, with me walking one day, and her driving the next, has been taxing.

Japanese learning wise, all is fine, I should be reviewing my items and levelling up tomorrow and I did 36 vocab lessons today. I’m definitely finding it good to go back over all this vocab because some of the intransitive ones, etc. had a hard time sticking in my memory the last time I went through these levels. I’m looking forward to the new pairing changes Tofugu are making to WaniKani for this very reason, hopefully it’ll reduce confusion.

Getting this update in just one minute past midnight, which is better than last night. Really must try to get into bed earlier given how tired I am, but despite being nearly 35 (and therefore half way to 70) I’ve still not learned any sense in terms of sleeping patterns.

Oh, unrelated, I binged the whole first season of Shadow and Bone on Netflix today (I’m a multi-tasking pro) and now I think I’ll have to read the books, damn.

LEVEL UP DAY!

Today has been an okay kind of day, my son woke me up at 7am, but I convinced him to stay in bed until it was standard wake up time. Then we all got in the car, in the rain, to take him to nursery and then drop off some of my wife’s orders from her craft shop off at the sorting office for delivery, since she wasn’t feeling up to doing so the last couple of days.

What follow was a fairly standard work day, until it was time to go and pick my son up once again. I’ve started watching The Irregulars on Netflix and I hadn’t realised that the Baker Street Irregulars were a… regular part of the Sherlock Holmes cannon, which is interesting. It’s quite a good series, I seem to be on a bit of a period drama fantasy kick at the moment what with this and Shadow and Bone.

Once six o’clock came round, it was time to do my level up review sand hit level 13, for the second time, before doing my radical and kanji lessons. I’ve had those come back for review, as is fairly standard on my regular Wednesday level up day. It was pointed out to me that levelling up on a Wednesday consistently is very much in the spirit of the site, because Wanikani Wednesdays, hehe.

Now it’s time to head off for a shower and then bed, because I am exhausted from not getting enough sleep again last night zzz
