Weekend, weekend, get no sleep on the weekend

Woken up at 7:30 this morning, my son wilfully ignoring my DIY GroClock, the scamp. So I took revenge by falling asleep on the sofa for two hours while he watched TV after we’d had breakfast. That’ll teach him. We then had an after lunch trip to the botanical gardens so he could burn a bunch of energy running his balance bike again.

I hit 0/0 yesterday, but completely forgot to write my update for the day. I’m going to try very hard to get back on the trend of always writing it before bed, because I find it helpful for maintaining my stats; though they do get pulled automatically into a Google Sheets sheet every night, as they have every night for nearly a year thanks to the wonderful guide that Viet made to doing that with the API.

I should be unlocking my second set of kanji for the level at 9:30am tomorrow, which puts me on target to return to my standard ~7.5 days per level routine that I was maintaining so well before I had my break and reset. Speaking of resets, I’ve also reset BunPro so I can get back into that more and I might do the same thing with some of my KitSun decks, though I’ve only got the Prefectures of Japan deck fully unlocked and am only 50 cards into the Genki Vocabulary deck, so I’m not sure if it’s really worth my time resetting all the levels back rather than just letting failed items fall naturally.

I’ve started trying to do more reviews on LingoDeer again every day to remember all that stuff, because I find it helps reinforce grammar and vocab, largely in line with Genki content. I purchased my lifetime sub to LingoDeer back when it was cheap and included all languages, so I don’t feel too bad taking my time with it. Same goes for LingoDeer+, which was cheaper for existing users. I’m quite enjoying the little vocab and particles games on that app, after originally writing it off somewhat. Nice little 5min exercises when I’ve got a second of peace.

Today was a nice enough day, woke up at 10am … well … I mean I got woken up at 7:50 but then managed to get a little longer to sleep and stayed in bed until 10 at which point I did my reviews as expected and then did thirty lessons to get my new kanji and some of the vocab done. I like doing it this way so that I get my 4hr reviews at 2pm and my 8hr ones at 10pm. Of course, if you’re doing a 7ish day rotation this means that your level up time flip flops from evening to morning and back again as you go forward, as I experienced having done nine weeks of perfectly same-day-of-the-week level ups last year.

I’ve done all my reviews for the day, done my little bit of BunPro studying and some more LingoDeer+ minigames throughout the day. A couple of 60s minigames are a good way to wait for tea to brew, let it be known. Keeps a bit of Japanese in my head throughout the day. The one thing I need to get back into is consuming some Japanese language media. I’m currently behind on watching the new season of Attack on Titan and haven’t watched the 2nd half of the first season of The Great Pretender on Netflix yet. I’ve been binge watching Grey’s Anatomy since it was added to Disney+ and I’m half way through season fifteen, so am almost caught up on that, at which time I’ll go back to watching anime to get that bit of my routine back in… I’ve still got a lot of Haikyuu!! to watch too.

When I saw you were watching The Great Pretender I nearly squealed, it’s such an underrated anime! How are you enjoying it so far?

I enjoyed the first half of the first season very much. I was a little bit wary during the first half of the first episode when they were talking with accents, but after that it was great, haha.

Or what I thought was the entire first season thanks to how Netflix has packaged it. I excitedly told @saibaneko the second season was on Netflix (because she introduced me to the show) and she had to let me down with the fact that it’s only the second half of the first season in terms of Japanese airing.

Today I had to get up at 7:45 and walk my son to nursery and then walk home again, so I was as exhausted as you’d expect. So I wanted until after breakfast to tackle my remaining 48 lessons, but got them done regardless. I then caught up on my BunPro stuff… still failing to catch up with Kitsun… but that’s what lifetime subs are for I guess, less pressure. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing - I still plan to completely memorise where all the prefectures are on the map, but… well… I don’t know where all the counties of the United Kingdom are either and I’ve gotten on fine so far.

Other than that, my only other news is that I made this lovely numpad today… excuse the wonky keys - it uses hot-swap sockets for the key switches, which aren’t particularly good at keeping switches traight… so II need to get an acrylic plate laser cut. It’s awfully cute though:

Maybe if I put as much effort into Japanese as I did into soldering tiny things to PCBs, I might be fluent by now. I’ve got three more of these kits I need to make. It will take me to peak macro pad heights, so I’ll only let myself if I’ve done all my lessons and reviews…

What you can maybe just make out is that the monitor on the left is not designed to be vertically mounted, but thankfully is quite light. So It’s weight rests on my desk, with the stand behind it (which is actually the stand for the curved one) using tension and zip ties to keep it standing at the right angle

Meant to post this last night (as you might expect) but there was a new series of Lego Masters to watch and then I was super tired, so never quite got round to it, despite my reminder alarms that tell me to.

Still at the middle of the level, with no related reviews, so not much to add on the levelling front. Still slowly working through LingoDeer lessons and adding three items a day on BunPro to stay relatively cautious in regard to overloading myself with other stuff that might cause burn out.

I’m about half way through the last season of Grey’s Anatomy on Disney+, so can finally return to binging some anime soon - though it’s a lot easier to watch English language shows on the background when working, I like to be watching anime in Japanese and therefore paying attention.

Not only did I fail to post an updated on on Wednesday, I also failed to post this last night, since I had my weekly Call of Cthulhu game which I play with one fellow Brit and a Keeper (CoC version of a DM) who lives in Chicago, so we play 22:30 through 00:30, which makes it hard to remember to post my update - I’ll need to start trying to remember to post before my session stats from now on!

I pushed through my stack of lessons and hit 0/0, taking me two a two level streak now. I didn’t manage to do any more BunPro lessons, but I did do my reviews, so after resetting over there I’m starting to rise through the levels again. I did the same learning path reset on LingoDeer to make sure that I go back over any of the stuff I’ve forgotten. I’d rather reset and recover than half remember all the important stuff.

Well, the same could be said for me about grammar and durtling! So, don’t be too hard on yourself. I think having a non-Japanese hobby is the sane thing to do as that will help you through those lessons and review-sessions.

Just quickly dropping in to update my stats and stuff before bed.

I’ve now almost caught up with the current season of Grey’s Anatomy (yes, that means that I’ve watched 16 seasons in less than a month) which mean that I can finally get back to watching some anime soon! It’s my week on campus next week, now that we’ve changed to a one-in-three rather than one-in-four schedule for our time on and off campus. This will mean I’ll be doing my lessons at some different times for those weeks, but I should still be able to maintain my streak fairly easily since I’ll get onto campus at 08:30 and won’t leave until 18:30.

Tomorrow is my lie-in day, which is lovely, then I’ll get my mid-level radical and kanji guru reviews early on Sunday morning, which is fine because that’ll be my turn to get up and let my wife have a lie-in. Such timing.

It is absolutely fascinating to me watching them dramatise a hospital dealing with a pandemic during a pandemic.

Another late in the day update, or early if you happen to live in a different time-zone, as I was absorbed for the last two hours watching Love and Monsters on Netflix - a surprisingly good film if you fancy that kind of post-apocalyptic fare. Regardless, it means that I’m once again rushing to put this in just before bed. Which I shall regret when I have to get up at just before 8am when my son arises from his slumber.

Fairly standard day, in which I was woken up at 7am by the owner of the house next door continuing to do renovation work. We share a wall with that house and that wall happens to be the one that our bed backs onto, so I’m sure you can imagine that it was fairly loud. I’m sincerely hoping that they realise that Sunday should be a quiet family day and therefore not mess with us again.

In WaniKani terms, I did my small pile of reviews immediately upon waking and have only had a dozen or so reviews trickle in during the day. I’ll get just over 40 reviews when I wake up in the morning, which’ll be my mid-level guru reviews for my kanji and radicals, so I’ll get those done and get the new kanji lessons done as soon as I can in order to keep my speed going and maintain Wednesday as my level up day.

I was quite proud, when I last levelled through these levels, that I managed to always level up on the same day of the week for nine levels, until I took my break and reset. Yes, my main reasoning for liking this was that it looks very tidy on the heat map. Thus I plan to aim for it again. Plus levelling up mid-week is very convenient in terms of not having to juggle it around childcare on the weekends.

For a rushed log entry, this has ended up quite long and my wife is now glaring at me for typing loudly, so I shall simply wish you all a good day/night/whatever and offer hope that you are well <3

I was woken up once again this morning by the owner of the house next door doing kitchen renovations. Fortunately we had a chat over the garden fence and I’ve been told that they’re finished… just in time for it not to matter because I’ll be on campus all this coming week so wouldn’t have been disturbed at all if they’d just waited and not done it at the weekend, but que sera.

Bleary eyed and half asleep, I started my reviews while sitting on the sofa with my 4-year old sun, under a duvet, and with Paw Patrol on. I did all my mid-level reviews, got my radicals and kanji finished (it’s certainly easier when you’ve done them all before) and did half of my new lessons.

Doing them at 7am meant that they came back before lunch and then just before I put my son to bed. With the return times being 23 hours and 47 hours, this means that I’ll level up before I leave work on Wednesday and be able to do the four hour reviews before bed and wake up to the 8 hour reviews. I’ve said this before, but I definitely find this the easiest way to maintain 7-day streaks; bouncing between levelling up early morning or mid-evening, this ensures that there’s very little wasted time, very few reviews come in over night, and the reviews are always done very close to the SRS intervals which is the most efficient for your memory.

I’ve started watching Kimetsu no Yaiba today at @lAtePotato’s recommendation and watched up to episode five so far. It’s as good as people give it credit for, so I’m very happy I’ve started watching it. After I finish watching this first season, I’ll go back and finish catching up on Attack on Titan and then catch up with Haiyakuu!! before watching the next half of the first season of The Great Pretender on Netflix. Thus are my anime watching plans for the next few weeks laid out!

Once again, I’ve crafted a novel rather than an update, but at least I’m making it seem like these study logs actually have content now ^-^

Oh and I’ve clearly been crap at keeping up with BunPro levelling of late, but will try to get back to that soon!
