Japanese Advent Calendar 2022 🎄 🇯🇵

If it helps, here is the full context:

しかし、不思議ですね。とうとうあの指環は出て来なかったというじゃありませんか。どうも、不思議ですね。
B …………
A …………
B ハハハハハハ。オイ、いい加減にしらばくれっこは止そうじゃねえか。この通り誰も聞いているものはいやしねえ。いつまでも、左様然さようしからばでもあるまいじゃないか。

It’s pretty far into the conversation and doesn’t matter a lot to the overall story, but it’s still a :exploding_head: sentence. I’m not particularly confident in my answer, but not totally sure of yours either

Ah, with that context my “farewell” interpretation doesn’t make sense, I agree  So I guess I need to switch to my variant 1b: “It shouldn’t stay like that forever, don’t you think?” (probably that the ring did not show up?)

Anyways, thanks for sharing the grammar puzzle! I’ll leave you to it now

Posting this a little early, as I may not have time tomorrow. 海 is a Jōyō kanji, taught in grade 2. It’s JLPT level N4 and WK level 6. I like it both for its shape and its meaning.

Here’s a video of Japanese Calligrapher Takumi writing it (and other sea-related kanji)

Today’s reading was 猫の事務所 by 宮沢賢治. Unclear publish date, but it feels 明治 or maybe 大正. I read it with this 朗読 which modernized it a bit.

I…kind of hated it. Such an uncomfortable read. Reminded me a lot of 闇祓 and why I haven’t finished it. Psychological cruelty just gets under my skin.

Tomorrow is 北大路魯山人, a brand new author for me!

Would you be willing to tell me a bit more about what the story is about? I’m curious, because in the Studio Ghibli film 猫の恩返し , there’s a place also called 猫の事務所 and now I’m curious if it’s named after the story you just read. Although the Ghibli one is a very nice place, ha, ha!

Summary with major spoilers blurred

It’s basically about an office of ‘history and geography’ where several cats work. A black cat, a white cat, a tiger striped cat, a calico, and a stove-cat. All the other cats hate the stove-cat and bully him. It ends with the stove-cat missing a day of work due to sickness, and the other cats lie to the boss and say he was skipping work instead. The next day, with the boss’ blessing, they all ignore him so thoroughly as if he doesn’t, and never did, exist. He spends the whole of that day, alone, ignored, and eventually softly crying with his head hanging in humiliation in the middle of the office. There is a mildly redeeming end where the office is closed when an important lion sees this and says

お前たちは何をしてゐるか。そんなことで地理も歴史もつたはなしでない。やめてしまへ。えい。解散を命ずる

which is basically, "Hey you all! This isn’t what history and geography are about! Stop this! I’m ordering this place closed!

But it still just…wasn’t my favorite

Edit: The whole time I thought 竈猫 was a tortie for some reason and thought the whole soot thing at the beginning was just weird. But uh, no, that kanji is for stove

Kanji writing practice

I usually try to pick Kanji which I don’t know yet but today was an exception. I wanted to write this one because I always liked its look. It has kind of a lively feel to it as if it could flap away at any second which fits its meaning perfectly.

I did it twice because I wasn’t happy with the result the first time. But the second time I wasn’t entirely happy either. Turns out either those papers aren’t exactly square, or I’m incapable of folding them precisely - probably a combination of both. I also had very few papers with good contrast on their two sides, and none with a white side for some reason.

Reading a bit early today. I read 美味い豆腐の話 by 北大路魯山人, published in 1933. It was an essay about what makes the best tofu, and lamenting bad tofu. I read it with this 朗読. This was an easy read for the most part, a few food terms I didn’t know but smooth sailing otherwise.

Kanji writing practice

I chose this Kanji due to its pleasant looking composition.

Little did I know, that it would end up being the hardest Kanji to write from my choices so far. My first row is all over the place and even after a while I still struggled to get the enclosed component part right. :face_with_spiral_eyes:
Still a neat looking Kanji, though…

Winter song

The song on December 9 was such a funny coincidence for me cause I was just at a disney pop up shop the night before I listened, and heard the same song in the shop. Honestly made me cringe, but watching it last night was fun because I could actually read and sing a long. Turned into a home karaoke session. Happy to be able to read most of the lyrics now!

December 10 was a First Take old rock song. First Take never fails with its production, but the song wasn’t my type I guess.
