:sparkles: Note: You can now add your own calendar, if you so wish, to the third post of this thread for easy access There’s already an advent calendar tradition here on WK that goes back years. It’s all about uploading pet photos, and while it’s a lovely idea, I thought it’d be interesting to have another one that’s more focused on Japanese, since we’re all Japanese learners here. Sort of like a mini challenge for the first 24 days of December, leading up to Christmas. It doesn’t need to be hard, just related to Japanese and easy to keep up for 24 days. Ideas so far Starting from Dec 1 and for every day until Dec 24: Study a grammar point a day Read a short story a day (maybe holiday related?) Read a sample of a random new book per day (and discover new things to read) Translate a sentence (out of a book?) a day Read about a different prefecture/city/area of Japan every day Listen to a different Japanese song every day (maybe holiday related?) Read about a different Japanese tradition every day (Christmas or otherwise) Find one instance of interesting onomatopoeia every day Read about and practice writing a kanji per day (stroke number could correspond to day of the month for extra fun) I think the last one is my favourite one so far. I checked and there are two kanji with 23 and two with 24 strokes, so it’s perfectly doable. None with 25, but that will be Christmas day anyway. Would anyone like to participate? Do you have any other ideas to suggest? There’s no reason we should only do one idea either, and maybe everyone could do their own thing and post about it. That could be a lot of fun to read about, I think. Are you interested in a Japanese-focused Advent Calendar? Would you participate? poll If you’re interested, would you do your own challenge for every day of December until the 24th, or would you just visit to see what others upload? poll Thoughts and ideas welcome! :christmas_tree: :jp:

December 4 Kanji writing Origami Song Mystery book reading Kanji writing [image] Origami [image] I’ve removed both grammar and onomatopoeia. It’s just a little too much to do each day, and I necessarily leave them for last until I’ve finished all my reading, and I’m way too tired by then to bother. The origami today was really satisfying as a process. I can see why it’s so popular.

December 4 Winter song Kanji writing Origami Winter song Today’s winter song was insanely cute but cringy at the same time if that’s possible! Never heard of the anime before Love Live School Idol Project before this. Also my first time to listen to a Japanese girl group. That crowd was insane! I think this was easier for me to follow than the previous songs though. I could definitely catch words more easily at the first listen. Too many to list all of the recognized words but just from the first few verses: 気持ち「きもち」feeling 特別「とくべつ」special 初めて出会ったから「はじめてであったから」from the first time we met? Kanji writing [20221204_222106] Played around with the last one to copy the last style. Related vocab not already covered in the previous post: 片付ける「かたづける」to tidy up, to put in order, to settle (problem), to clear (dispute) 片道「かたみち」one-way (trip), one-way ticket But I also really like the one already mentioned: [image] omk3: かた思おもい (unrequited love; one-sided love) Cause I’m a sucker for sad stories. Oh and by the way, I’m just going about the kanji writing by copying @omk3 's selected kanji! Since you’ve nicely provided the stroke orders and the pronunciations as well as related vocab. Thank you!! Origami [20221204_221105] I recognized her saying 一番「いちばん」at the beginning. I can only assume this is the number one origami made by people? And of course the kanji for crane which is 鶴「つる」. Already learned the radical for bird but haven’t seen that first radical yet. I really liked making this one as well. Although the dark origami paper didn’t help cause i couldn’t see my previous folds! >

[image] alygator: Today’s winter song was insanely cute but cringy at the same time if that’s possible! I had the same reaction^^; I liked it better in the visual context of the anime shown behind them, especially when it showed that the dance choreography was from the show. The outfits must be tapping into a visual language I don’t have access to because they seemed very off to me, and they didn’t seem to reference the anime either.

Day 4:christmas_tree: Back to home post What a funky little kanji. Kinda looks like a zombie advancing to the right. [Kanji_04] My crane looks very drunk, please don’t judge them too harshly for their holday cheer. [Origami_04]

Was also thinking this exact thing, why the outfits were so off when the anime costumes were soooo simple. Literally all white! And yes, the anime for me is more appealing too! [image] Twelvewishes: My crane looks very drunk, please don’t judge them too harshly for their holday cheer. I love the drunk crane! He looks like he has character with his bent beak. :joy: Love the shadow effect as well.

I thought it’d be nice if I tried reading japanese media for this advent! I’ve already read beginner news articles and am attempting to read through manga (yotsubato), but I haven’t been doing either daily. I’ll be doing some kind of reading daily for the advent. Any amount is fine, just the consistency matters. I also don’t expect myself to be able to understand what I read fully… but I’ll try my best!

:u7981: Advent of Ascending Kanji - Day 04 :secret: Four stroke kanji: 天 [Handwriting] Heavens; sky; imperial Kun: あまつ; あめ; あま- On: テン Practice [Practice] I don’t think any of my practice attempts looked the same as each other this time, so wobbly.

:spiral_calendar: :christmas_tree: Japanese Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 4 :christmas_tree: :spiral_calendar: December 4th Today’s Kanji: 幻 Kun’yomi: まぼろし On’yomi: ゲン Meaning: phantasm, vision; dream; illusion :fountain_pen: Kanji writing Kanji writing practice [Kanji_writing_calendar_Dec 4] I’m satisfied with today’s result – no weird-looking 1st try either. Replies and extra picture @Zakarius The pen I use is the ‘Pentel Pocket Brush’ (see image) which is apparently still purchasable according to a quick internet search. I’m not sure if this is the pen’s doing or my lack of skill – as in the tool is only as good as its wielder – but sometimes the strokes have slightly wavy edges which I find a tad bit irritating. Other than that, I’m glad that you like the result and that I remembered to make use of this pen again. :slightly_smiling_face: Also, I like your ‘drunk’ crane, @Twelvewishes, it has character. :grinning: Speaking of cranes: while I didn’t participate in today’s orgami session, I’d still like to share a picture of one tiny crane that someone bought and gifted me a while ago: [Tiny crane 1] [Tiny crane 2]
