So I just reached level 60 and saw the 60$ lifetime offer. I had originally planned to keep my subscription for another 2 months, but am starting to realize I could use a refresher of some previous kanji since I kinda rushed some earlier levels. Would it be worth the money to upgrade to lifetime and keep hammering these kanji or is it better to keep it for 2 months and move on to new ways of studying? Thanks
How about moving on? Vocabularies, having Kanji or not, might be more important. Depending on reading materials, they could already have Furigana for hint.
WaniKani will not teach all vocab and Kanji. And for each Kanji it teaches, it will not teach all vocabularies. (Use Anki or jpdb.io or other tools, if you ever need SRS for those.)
On the other hand, WaniKani might be good for structure, in case you stopped using Japanese for a long while, and need to restart for very basics again…
If you’re self disciplined and can replace the time you spent on wanikani everyday with another habit like reading for reinforcement then I don’t think you need the lifetime.
That being said, the content team seems to regularly add new vocab and kanji so if the cost is manageable for you it might be worthwhile to keep the membership so you can pick up new lessons and review burned items when you feel like it.
While it’s true that the team keeps adding content, I don’t think it’s worth paying $60 to get like 3 new kanji a year. I’m a lifetime subscriber but I haven’t engaged with the new additions since I finished the course a few years ago.
As @polv says, I think the key factor is more about how you feel about transitioning your WaniKani routine into something else. Good habits are hard to build, disrupting your routine may be a concern if you’re not sure where to go next.
Why not get the cheap lifetime and just reset to level 1? Get back to 60 at a slower pace, keep WK as a supplement to your other things. That’s what I did.
