It’s funny that you made this comparison. Many years ago I did exactly that — switched from QWERTY to Dvorak in the middle of writing my thesis. Took me several hours to start touch-typing (slowly), surpassed my QWERTY speed within several days; never looked back.
You weren’t forced to change it
All the qwerty keyboards you owned weren’t suddenly changed
That’s why I prefer to fudge my WK reviews and wait for immersion to fill the gaps. Like the words 勝手 and 都合 for instance, they’re both “one’s convenience” but the meaning in practice is quite different. The former is (often) rather negative and implies selfishness, while the latter is neutral.
The reason I remember this is not because I learned it directly on WaniKani, it’s because I’ve encountered both several times in the wild and in context the difference was obvious.
That’s the best of both worlds for me: thanks to WK I know how to recognize the kanji, how to read them and I have a rough idea of the meaning, then I can “unlock” all that knowledge during immersion.
good point - to be clear I was looking up the roots for the English words, to understand the specific connotations of each, which helped me out when approaching the kanji/vocab. But the same is true of Japanese! The details of how to use things won’t always be easy to remember at first, and seeing it used in the real world will go a long way. Overall it’s probably fine as long as you know the general meaning and you’re filling in your education with actual listening/reading practice. Personally I tend to be a little rigid with my answers, since a lot of my issues are with short-term memory, and I’ve been studying Japanese for quite a long time, so I really want to drill more precise usages into my brain finally - but I don’t think it’s the most helpful strategy for the ordinary learner to gain the most knowledge as quickly as possible.
Me too. It’s slower going through cards now and I’m so disappointed. Have you sent them an email? I think the more of us that contact them the better chances something will change.
I use WK on a cellphone and a laptop and find the recent changes very frustrating on both. Previous format was much better.
Reorder Ultimate broke for me in the last update. I had to switch to Reorder Omega, which i sbetter than nothing, but I agree with you. I preferred Reorder Ultimate. I liked reordering during my lesson.
It took me a few days to adjust tor Reorder Omega, and I couldn’t do my reviews for a few days.
I’m autisitc, so changes overwhelm me. But, I created my own presets on Reorder Omega so I can kind of get a similiar vibe of Reorder Ultimate. Hopefully, you can do the same.
頑張って!
The Sims 4 constantly updating and breaking my mods has prepared me for this day!
The scripts will be updated soon, everyone! Hold tight!
I also don’t like the new look of everything, but i’m sure we’ll become accustomed to it after awhile!
How you can say ‘I don’t have X problem so, therefore, nobody does’ and call me childish
Er. Yes. What else could chat gpt be? It doesn’t know anything, except statistical word patterns.

Okay I made the wanikani → anki export script
you can get it here
This is against the TOS: Terms of Service - WaniKani Community
See section II.
Please be more understanding. Not everybody learns the same way that you do. The way that you learn is valid, but the way that @Barsky learns is also valid. If people were used to an experience they’ve historically had access to, then yes, people will be upset when they no longer have that same experience.
The ability to provide critical feedback is especially important when everybody pays for this product. It’s fine to disagree, but truly there is no need to name-call in this forum.
What I made isn’t dissimilar to flaming durtles. All it does is make a personal copy of your cards that can be reviewed in a third-party app(in this case anki), and it makes no attempt to steal or distribute wanikani data.
I didn’t mean to start a flame war but my reasoning is that because I paid for a product, I should be able to use the product that I paid for. I understand that changing the platform is Wanikanis right but I feel as though my distaste towards the situation is justified.
I think it’s quite the shame they didn’t do a poll first or something lol
I don’t know if you’ve already seen TofuguJenny’s pinned update post, but it really does seem like they are taking the feedback seriously. She was saying that the team will be making changes incrementally to implement functions that were only available before with scripts, but to me it doesn’t make sense to remove first, then add later, especially when the product was fine as it was.
If this was their intent, then they should have made the changes slowly first on non-live version, then they make the switch to live when most of the functions were already prepared. I think that would have at least prevented the amount of dissatisfied feedback by making it look like a little step forward, instead of a step or two backward.
the update was a misstep but my god calling it “braindead” sheer hyperbole does not constitute worthwhile criticism
I mean, I don’t have a crystal ball and don’t know what will happen, but that comment was just 100% standard corporate feedback. “We take your concerns seriously, this was all done in order to make the product more stable, etc.”
I don’t think that’s wrong at all - in fact, exactly that level of professionalism is something I would expect from a paid service - but I also wouldn’t read too much into it.
do we get durtles for complaining in the thread. wk team i want another durtle
