50% Jap, 100% bogan, I was getting sick of being the sole occupant of ‘The English Speakers Couch’ during family gatherings in Japan. Besides, JoJo is just better in Japanese ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Learning Japanese was always something I planned on ‘getting around to eventually’. But it turns out you actually have to start learning to start learning. Funny about that!
After a year and a half of climbing, the view from the top is exciting, but I’m already eyeing up the next mountain. My grammar and vocab have some holes that I’m going to work toward patching up. I’m going to drill down on Bunpro and I’m thiking of checking out Torii
Sappy, sappy, though I wish おばあちゃん could see my progress. But I feel like the process of learning her language has gotten me closer to her in a way.
Anywayyy, here are my stats and all that. Good luck in your struggle with the crabigator, it’s worth it I promise!
Love the description! Good on you for actively addressing your ability to communicate with the Japanese half of your family - does おばあちゃん do skype or zoom?
Hey just because you hit level 60 doesn’t mean you can take out your excitement on poor Shruggie! He’ll never be the same without that arm! How do you live with yourself?!
Obligatory “How do you find reading/listening/speaking exactly?” question!
And I suppose what sort of materials do you like to engage in/was there a point that certain materials were easier, or certain practices that you found helped you?
Reading is going pretty well, it helps to have something with pictures for context (Pet books like インコの時間 are surprisingly helpful). Listening and speaking are still a bit rough, but I’ve found the Nihongo con Teppei podcast good to test my comprehension. Everything is in short bites so there’s no excuse I can make not to listen!
So excited to be able to contribute more than an ”うん、そうかぁぁぁ。。。”
Mum and I have the occasional japanese exchange, but we unfotunately don’t keep it up (-ω-、)
I think I want to try and find a language exchange partner/tutor to really focus on my speaking skills a bit more.
So I’m not familiar with either of those! Can I ask what those books are exactly? Are they something you would recommend?
I haven’t heard of that podcast either. I had a quick look, I think it was a little bit too much for me to understand. I can’t see a translation, they don’t have one? Hmm, when abouts in your progress do you think you started listening to it? Level 10?
