*ekg's leech battle blog - a study log of sorts

Ah, the price of success. lol

Seriously though, until i hit the 50’s I didn’t give much thought to post-WK since it was so far off. It’s interesting to see how you get through it.

156? I think I had like 500 by the time I was lvl 60. Over 300 was in Guru I think.

It is. There really was no need to rush things like that. ^^; It’s going to be interesting to see how things continue now. I mean, the review levels have dropped by now, though tomorrow comes the second batch of lv 60 lessons. Maybe I’ll spread the lessons out. I hear that’s what most people do! :joy:

Well, that does indeed put it in perspective. And I have seen users with insane amounts of leeches. But, yeah, I managed to get them below 90 and I very much would like for things to return to that.

So, today I’ve snuck in a bit of leech training. It’s best to just attack them directly and be done with it and let the SRS work it’s magic.

But, with the leech settings I’m using, it means a leech is counted as such all the way until Enlightenment. So, it’s slow going to bring numbers down.

It will take a month or so for the current leeches to hopefully go away.

Reaching lv 60 didn’t change my workload much in the following days; after all I binged all lessons again. Then I unlocked my second batch of lessons and binged those to. Now there are just 2 kanji left to guru, on of them today. These are my last WK lessons. ちょっと寂しい.

But, now I clearly see a trend on the Ultimate Timeline. Reviews are going down.

Also, it’s made it possible for me to devote time to serious leech training. As in doing the whole lot. I’m doing another set of ALL leeches today, to make sure I have the current leeches down to a t.

Leech numbers are still pretty high compared to before the fast levels: right now 157, whispered but they were up to 170 for a while there.

I think my leech squashing also needs another component to be truly successful: return of the immersion learning regime. :tada::confetti_ball:

I had put most stuff on hold because of the furious pace of WK during the fast levels. Heck, even since before that, as the numbers of reviews grew in intensity. I just didn’t have the energy.

So, since reviews are now down I again feel I have energy to devote to reading. :books:

So, that’s what I’ve been doing these past days. I went through 4 volumes of Japanese manga at a fast pace. I’m not reading it as fast as English, but it’s getting pretty close. o_o I’m a bit shocked to say the least, that I don’t have to constantly look up kanji, but now it’s down to stuff here and there. And that makes reading so much more enjoyable!

I’m gonna reread Kuroshitsuji to see how much more I get this time round. :triumph: (it has furigana, so this is also a trial to see if I can mentally ignore them! )

It’s a gorgeous, absurdly funny, crime-solving manga set in the 19th century England - all things I love. I highly recommend this series

I’m gonna indulge myself by buying the continuation from where I stopped some years ago. But, first, rereading up to that point! ^>^

Some say the cake is a lie when you reach lv 60. So, I took matters in my own hands by making one for my lv 60 level up.

Therefore I was VERY surprised when I suddenly got a “cake” spread delivered to my doorstep! O_O  :confetti_ball: :cake:

Durtle on Fire chocolate cupcake! :fire: :durtle: :cupcake:

I have my suspicions. I mean, did WaniKani actually send me this? Or was it you @KyokaJiro?! :eyes:

Or even someone else? Whoever you are, mystery cake giver, thank you for the delicious cake! 美味しかった! :yum:

EDIT: it would seem all other suspects have denied involvement and that leaves me to just say: thank you Wanikani team for the delicious cake! ^>^ :sparkling_heart: :sparkling_heart: :sparkling_heart: @koichi @TofuguKanae @TofuguJenny @Aya and the rest of the team at Tofugu: you’re all amazing for creating WK and helping so many of us learn kanji! ^>^ :durtle:

Now I think I need another bite of cake! :yum:

Congrats ekg san

That looks as beautiful as it is delicious :yum:

I think it might be sent by WK. I didn’t send this one.

I can’t think of anyone else who can offer custom Durtle cakes to users

So the cake really is REAL! OMG! Thank you WK team! ^>^

Time for an update! ^>^

Things have calmed down a lot since I got to lv 60. And I’m now slowly moving toward that sweet point of having finished 50% of WK!

The leeches are also again going down in numbers which makes me happy. There’s 141 leeches right now.

I feel like I again have more energy to work on them.

I’m also planning to to a bit of special training of groups of items that I feel are extra important to get right, such as time items.

I don’t know why they confuse me so, but I keep mixing some of them up. I think it makes sense to just create a list of all items and study them until I truly feel confident about using them.

How do you plan to study this list? Do you plan to use the Item List optional filter in Item Inspector?

If you enable this filter in the optional filter setting you can study the listed items in Item Inspector and be quizzed on them with the Self Study Quiz button.

The procedure:

  • Configure the Item List filter in the optional filters settings
  • Refresh your browser to cause the change to take effect
  • This will cause three new filters to appear in the filters tab call radical list, kanji list and vocabulary list…
  • Type in the time item in the vocabulary list filter separated by commas.
  • In the item type filter select the vocabulary items. This is required to avoid spurious radicals and kanji to appear in the table.

This will cause your time items show up in a table ready for studying.

As an alternative you may use the Explicit list filter that does the same thing with more features. The procedure.

  • Enable the Kanjidic2/Traditional radicals optional filter
  • Refresh your browser to make the change take effect.
  • This will cause several filter to show up. The one you want is called Explicit List
  • Configure your items in this filter

Edit: i see you have augmented your list. For this many items the explicit list filter will work better because you have a larger box to edit your item list.

Thank you! I’ll be looking into the explicit list then! Sounds good. I hadn’t really thought about how to go about it, beyond just repetition learning. I’m still not done with the list either. ^^;

Time for a quick update. I’m very close to reaching 50% burns. ^>^

And apprentice and guru items keep going down. As are the number of leeches. Current leech count is 144 leeches.

All in all, not too bad! ^>^

Now back to leech training!

You got this! Glad to see you progressing so well :smile_cat:

So, it’s finally happened. I’ve reached the true WK half-way point!

It’s only going to get easier from now on. I do hope I get to burn lots of durtles

before my subscription runs out. I don’t plan on renewing it as I don’t see it as especially useful to insist on burning all, with the extra cost involved (if so, I should have gotten lifetime).

I hope that by the late summer this year, much should be burned or in Enlightened (or having been in Enlightened) and that should be good enough.

Now is the time to focus on reading as much as I want and enforcing kanji and vocab that way.

I still haven’t started with BunPro…I’m still not convinced I’ll enjoy the format. But, we’ll see. There are also lots of other grammar resources! ^>^

I sort of forgot to also update my leech count. At the end of today, many Burns, Mastered, and Enlightened items later I had gotten rid of another 10 leeches. They’re now down to 132!

If only I could remember “to be afflicted”, and “address”.

seeing that 住所 in your leeches worries me, i’m already struggling with it

I keep on answering “admission fee”! >_> And then remembering, no, this is address! For “to be afflicted”, it’s the reading that I keep forgetting 患う (わずらう).

But, I’ve burned some of those really stubborn leeches recently, items that I’ve failed to burn and then have seen moving between mastered and guru’d.

I some cases I haven’t yet seen the item in the wild. Or I have, but didn’t notice (essentially before WK). As I read more stuff now, I do make a stronger connection with vocab and kanji and that makes some leeches go away naturally.

And in the meanwhile, I do leech training. It’s the best I’ve got that’s pretty time efficient.

I’m sure you’ll eventually master your leeches as well. 頑張って! ^>^

Today I checked out my accuracy. Not from WK stats, but rather from here Wanikani Statistics :eyes:

The numbers sort of jives with my general understanding of my WK journey also. I’ve used A1 and A2 as learning rounds for as long as I needed. Some items I learn immediately, others I fails a couple of times at least before Guruing.

Items pretty much move up, only for G2 to be the next big hurdle. Again several items get sent down to A3 and rehashed to get better retention (these are temporary leeches).

As for items being failed at Master and Enlightened, those may very well be real leeches - items I’ve really struggled with to get that far, but which still hasn’t been fully learned.

But, those numbers are not half-bad! I’m glad my burn-rate isn’t a complete disaster. Not the least since I won’t have time for “second attempt”-burns for the last levels (either I burn them on the first try, or not at all before my subscription runs out).

I wonder how many % of the total burns I’ll end up before my subscription ends? ^>^ waku waku

Time for an update. It’s finally showing that I’ve got no new lessons and reviews are decreasing each day.

Some stats…

Workload Graph

Wanikani timemachine

Final Heatmap lessons

Current Heatmap reviews

And finally today’s review forecast for the week…

There is certainly no need to panic if I can’t do my reviews on a particular day. I find I enjoy this relaxed leisurely tempo a lot. Or rather, the flexibility of it. Though I still do my reviews every day.

Which reminds me I’ve got 30-ish waiting for me…^^ Might as well get them done!
