Iāve been pretty happy going at my own pace. Iām not super consistent but Iāve never given up since I started, just progressing slowly but surely
Dont worry about that first spike, that was me on a bad day of learning Japanese and deciding to take a break. Now I am comitted and my goal is to stay under 2 weeks per level. So far I would say itās looking like it is possible because I am doing my reviews every day. Usually 1-2 times per day when I work, or as often as I can when I am at home.
This combined with Uni studies really felt like hell tbh. I like it though since hell has a nice atmosphere and being able to read so much is so motivating.
Big warning! I donāt recommend this pace unless you want to have 300+ reviews/day
I try to be consistent with my level-up timing. I am currently in the fast levels and tried to finish them in 3-4 days. Sure enough that was a bad idea I will go back to my 7-8 days schedule. The only thing that motivates me to do my review is actually being in Japan and feels my reading comprehension really getting better everytime.
I feel like mine is particularly messy - I discovered WaniKani when I first got into Japanese and I signed up for it, but it turned out I wasnāt ready to study kanji seriously until 2 years later, when I jumped into Level 1 again and managed a pretty good pace during the pandemic lockdown. As you can see, I hit a brutal wall at Level 32. I had to stop and reconsider how I was going to change my approach, since I had built up a critical mass of leeches and items in the Apprentice levels.
I feel good about my current relationship with WaniKani - I do all my reviews every morning and every night, and a few lessons each day. I have switched my focus to reading and speaking, but I still very much want to go all the way to Level 60. It will probably take me another couple of years, but I find that I already can recognize the majority of the kanji in manga and visual novels, and that makes me happy and willing to be patient to learn the rest.
Not doing any lesssons before the JLPT in December though, so I can focus on more important things at the moment.
Should still finish either in December or early January
It is a bit sad though, WK has become such an integral part of my day
Leveling up pretty fast also since I only started as soon as I already had a year experience (with Duolingo) in japanese, no focus on learning the kanji though. Although I definitely struggle on the current levels, as they feature kanji I never seen or heard before and I dont find as much time for WK as I used to.
Believe it or not, I was doing reviews pretty consistently the whole time, so I have a huge burn pile. I just didnāt have the time/health/energy for new lessons, so it stagnated.
Iām trying for 15 WaniKani lessons/day now, plus Anki vocab and Genki, and itās going much faster. It feels nice to make progress.
Not the person you asked, but 60. I can read pretty much anything, the problem is vocabulary. I can guess most readings and the meaning of the word generally, the problem is that I donāt really know the definition. I would probably guess youād need anything between 25-30k words to get anywhere close to fluency.
omg the consistency, it looks REALLY nice. I knew you put in a lot of hard work sticking to the schedule everyday. mine was pretty level in the early days and i managed to keep it until later this year when i had my first job. since then some levels are starting to take a long time i get motivated from yours though!
Iāve found a rhythm that works quite well for now.
Weāll see how long I can keep it up!
Iām currently levelling up each Saturday morning which mean I do my reviews and lesson over the day.
Itās getting a bit tiresome but I really donāt like notification and canāt leave lessons waitingā¦
