This is it. You’ll find that the kitchen is often on the same side of the house as bathroom/laundry/etc. And if there’s multiple floors, they’ll typically be above each other. As you say, it’s to keep plumbing simple and to a minimum
In America (aka “the states” as known in the “the kingdom”) it’s culturally shameful to admit that you’re producing excrement. As a matter of class, most people also fart in the “bathroom,” by saying “bathroom,” the intent is thinly veiled, as without further inquiry there’s at least a small shade of doubt as to your purpose. Perhaps you’re merely washing your hands and face, or you’re using the powders or makeup. We also often joke that women don’t fart, and so on. Clearly this is not typical in every country. I’d also point out that almost every bathroom contains a toilet, even though there are “guest bathrooms” which don’t contain a bath or shower; these are actually not considered bathrooms, and if you sell a house you would put “0.5” bathrooms. For example if your house has 3 full bathrooms and a guest bathroom, you’d say it has “3.5” bathrooms.
