its basically the equvivlent of calling someone ‘it’ in english

When it comes to using こちらは or そちらは it is considered more polite, from what I learned. The reason is unlike あの/その/この it specifies a general location of the person. So the phrase こちらはアリスです, literally means “On this side (of the speaker) is Alice.”
