Heyo all I was wondering, what is the difference between おぼえる & 暗記する?
覚える is used when you remember something (for example a memory from the past) whereas 暗記する is specifically used when trying to memorize something (like studying).
覚える is also used for learning/knowledge acquisition, though. The second definition given by Goo is:
学んだり経験したりして、身につける。習得する。
To study/take lessons in or experience, etc. something and learn it. To acquire knowledge.
Goo also has English definitions for “暗記する,” the first being “(そらで覚える) learn a thing by heart; memorize. (メモをとる代わりに) commit a thing to memory.” And for “暗記している” - “to know a thing by heart.”
暗記 itself it defines as:
文字・数字などを、書いたものを見ないでもすらすらと言えるように、よく覚えること。
Knowing/Having memorized something well enough that one can readily recite words, numbers, and the like without looking at them written down.
覚える has a wider usage than just learning or memorizing, but 暗記する is a stronger expression of that sense of 覚える. You haven’t just learned something, you’ve learned it by heart.
You 暗記する things so that you can 覚える those things later
I wouldn’t say 覚える happens after 暗記する. Recalling is not 覚える.
