It’s a bit of a stretch since it’s not actually meant to look like a temple originally anyway. It just happens to mean temple (it’s a hand on the bottom with a phonetic symbol on the top that got simplified to 土 over time, so there’s no dirt relation originally or anything).
But I guess they’re trying to say you can try imagining one of these layered temples

Maybe something like this? This is one of the more famous buildings at Yama-dera in Yamagata Prefecture.
(Though the vertical stroke in the bottom half isn’t angled like I’ve drawn here.)
What’s interesting is that the traditional character has 士 - Jisho.org instead of 土 - Jisho.org at the top.
